Description

Celestron's CGX-L Computerized Equatorial mount is the latest addition to our fully computerized equatorial mount series. Capable of carrying Celestron’s largest optical tubes with ease, CGX-L is designed for backyard observatories and remote imagers looking for exceptional load capacity to weight ratio, compact design, and innovative features that fully support large telescopes, imaging kits, and the latest in wireless tech accessories. Key design goals included larger 144mm diameter worm wheels which provide smoother operation and can more accurately drive heavier loads, longer 270mm dovetail saddle to support larger optical tubes, remote operation friendly features such as home and limit optical sensors, easier polar alignment adjustments, and better cable management overall. In addition to that, we’ve made mechanical and ergonomic improvements throughout to make the mount sturdier, easier to use, and easier to transport. COMPACT. ERGONOMIC. INNOVATIVE.

  • Received half a product, went through hell dealing with Celestron
I had ordered this to arrive just in time to see Uranus at opposition on 10/19. When the packages arrived that day, I opened them to find that I was sent just the CGX-L mount. So, disappointed that I missed opposition, I called the seller and requested the rest of my product (the OTA) be sent to me. After the call, I went back to assemble and check out the mount to find that it was missing one of the screws to fasten the mount to the tripod. Whatever, I'll just request one be sent over with the OTA. I continue assembling it to find that it seems like the rod up which you slide the lens holder/base plate is staggered. Only one of the tripod legs are flush with the plate, and turning the nut under the plate any further filled the room with the screech of grinding metal. Now, I'm upset that not only am I missing something, now my 140lb mount may have to be returned for being defective. Frustrated, I call Celestron support at 3:30pm shortly after assembling the mount (they close at 4pm). After waiting 5-10min to get on the line, I'm greeted by an angry agent who says (to the best of my memory, something like) "COME ON man, really? It's almost 4 o'clock!" Stunned, I assured him that if he was angry, he was nowhere near as angry as me. We continued the conversation about requesting the screw, with him giving me an angry tone almost the entire time. The conversation switched over to why my mount seemed defective. At this point, his tone lightened up a bit, and he said that it sounds like something he's dealt with in his own experience, and that the legs just have to be really pulled to get in place. That remains to be seen, because I've tried moving those legs every which way and nothing brings the rod straight enough to come closer to having the plate flush with the legs. We hang up, and I'm furious about the call I just had and the fact that I'm even having to deal with this in the first place. A few days go by and I see the mount/ota combo I bought in an AdSense ad and notice something different. I realize that this setup comes with two counterweights, and my mount came with one, as the mount does when purchased alone. Immediately I dreaded having to call these people back, but got on the phone. Thankfully I was greeted by a much more pleasant agent who helped a great deal with arranging the weight be delivered asap, and offered to ask the engineers about the issue regarding the mount rod alignment. So, I sent over pictures and am awaiting the response to see if I'll have to deal with repackaging and returning a 40lb tripod, or (hopefully not) the entire mount. Given that this thing cost over $6000, you would think an issue as blatant as sending only half of a product (a product weighing 200lb total) would be obvious. I'm going to do my best to avoid Celestron in the future, only as a last resort when no other brand or store will do. I'm waiting to receive the item to give any more stars, because only being blown away by its quality will I give anything more than 1 star. The way they handled the second call regarding the screw and mount was absolutely unacceptable, and I'm DEEPLY regretting not driving the 2-3hrs it would take to get it from the nearest dealer. And I won't be using my telescope for another week, assuming nothing else goes wrong from here on out. I'll include pictures of the mount defects if they are confirmed to be defects by the product engineers. ... show more

  • Not portable. Atrociously poor customer service.... Many other issues.See below
What I dislike: 1) Customer service is horrible. I had assembled and installed the mount on a pier in my observatory and I had issues with the polar alignment. This is a classic catch 20 20 situation. Ideally polar alignment should be done without the mount being loaded 2) Anyway, when I attempted to do polar alignment I was off in azimuth and altitude. The azimuth turned to be too far to the west, so much so that the left azimuth adjustment knob had no further room to move! Rotating the entire upper assembly with the mount/pier loaded is not a pleasant endeavour even though the cradle assembly is very well balanced. 3) The polar axis too reached a limit. It needs to be raised another 2 degrees, however loosening the altitude knobs causes some slipping further DOWN in altitude. Rotating the altitude adjustment knob causes the knob to unthread and come off!!! 4) Two star Align: Right off the bat here there is a problem. This should be done with the finderscope with crosshair ocular and a wide angle eyepiece in the focuser of the OTA to be very well aligned. The first star will be waaaaay off! 5) No spiral search feature! 6) No variable speed settings on the hand-control so that you can slow your speed once you sight the first alignment star in the finderscope. 7) No reticle scope for quick set-up in narrowing down the parameters for azimuth and altitude location in conjunction with an app using the Kochab Clock concept. These are my very annoying issues. Incidentally my first mount was defective right out of the box and was sent back and repaired at Celestron's expense. The manual doesn't cover these issues and you will be soaked further to buy accessories you do not need. Portability? That is a laugh! I cannot comment further on how well the mount will perform once I get past the alignment process. ... show more
