First of all I would like to extend my many thanks and appreciation to Mr. Stephen Franks for his helpful advice in collimating this telescope because when I received it, it was very much out of adjustment. This is my first telescope I have purchased and have been a long-time lover of Astronomy since my teenage years, I am 52 years old now, lol. I would like to first begin with saying that the quality of this telescope is absolutely incredible. It probably goes without saying that the many Celestron products are so, but I was completely blown away by what I had purchased. I did a lot of research and found that this was a very good refractor. Although I did discover that it was not a good telescope for deep sky astrophotography, I decided in its favor anyway thinking that I could perform “Stacked” astrophotography to make up for its shortcomings due to its F/8 focal length. When Mr. Franks described this beast as a “yard cannon”, it is very much true. First Light. I initially set up this telescope 3 months after I purchased it. Between the incredibly horrible Ohio weather, my demanding job, and a beautiful wife that has an enormous “Honey, You Better DO, List”, I finally got to set this monster up in my back yard. Assembling it about two hours before nightfall, it quickly got the attention of both my next door neighbors. Unfortunately they weren’t around 6 hours later to see a beautiful 3rd quarter crescent moon. I did manage to wake my wife at 0300 hrs to see not only that incredible moon, but also Jupiter, Saturn, and Mars. She was completely blown away as I was. The views are incredible. As far as deep sky objects, I have ventured that far. I have just purchased a Canon DSLR because I want to actually take pictures/exposures of what I see. I haven’t had this out much, matter of fact only twice since March, for reasons previously explained. But thus far I have no complaints whatsoever. All of what the two gentlemen stated in their reviews is correct, very much true. I would only add the following: This telescope is by no means easily transportable in a small car if you are looking to venture away from home in search of darker skies. It is truly BIG. Once you set this up, be sure you set it up correctly before aligning it to the stars, i.e. leveling. It shouldn’t be moved at all. If you feel you have to move it, take great care because it does weigh close to 100 lbs. and very awkward if lifted. Although I purchased the Celestron Power Tank, buy the AC adapter so it can be plugged into an outlet. I will eventually use the power tank in the field when I get the time to do so. This is an Awesome telescope. No regrets about purchasing it whatsoever. ... show more

    • Good pairing of telescope and mount!
The C6R telescope is a good, not great telescope. The AVX mount is a very good, not great mount. Together the pair is a good combination for routine backyard viewing. The C6R is almost 5 ft 6 in long which makes transporting it anywhere in a vehicle rather problematic. The AVX mount with the 2" aluminum tripod legs is a very solid platform and performs quite well with the relatively light C6R OTA mounted on it, although balancing it during initial setup can be tricky as a one person operation - it's just long and the CoG is way towards the non-eyepiece end. Take time to balance the telescope with the eyepiece end as close to the mount as possible (particularly in the DEC axis) - this will reduce the likelihood that the eyepiece end will collide with one of the tripod legs while the scope is slewing to objects near the zenith. As with any standard refractor there is noticeable chromatic aberration (CA) and color fringing of bright objects (Moon, Venus, Jupiter) This can be reduced / eliminated by either using the smaller aperture end cap or an eyepiece filter set. Finally, expect at least a month of cloudy nights immediately after you purchase this combination... it's the new telescope curse! :-) ... show more

    • A truly spectacular value for the price.
The mount is rock solid. Finish quality is very high. The cell and focuser are metal. The GOTO system is the most advanced yet with loads of extra features for visual observations and CCD imaging. Three star alignments center my targets in a 24 mm eyepiece to, at least, the manual's claimed 10 arc minute accuracy. The optical tube has a 1-1/2 to 2 second damp time from a sharp tap despite the tube's great moment arm. Field weight is 75lbs assembled. Tube 19lbs., mount 16lbs. tripod 18lbs, counterweights 22lbs. Quick assembly. Frankly, I was taken aback, if not impressed, by its huge stature and sheer bulk as it stood assembled for the first time in the living room, towering 7' to its dew shield! The cradle ring dovetail makes attaching the OTA quick, easy and safe. Adding a large $6 handle from the hardware store to the top of the cradle rings now makes it a breeze to carry and attach to the mount. Its 6" aperture performs amazingly well on deep sky objects like open and globular clusters and nebulae. In fact, its light gathering is on par with an 8" Schmidt-Cass due to zero obstructions of the light path. M13 and other globulars can be easily resolved to their core down to 8mm and 6mm due to the superior image contrast that only a refractor can produce. Last night I glimpsed a 10th magnitude galaxy NGC7331 in Pegasus. It was a single, irregular smudge 50 million light years away, but I saw it for the first time. M31, the Andromeda galaxy, was brilliant and dominated the expanse of my 32 Konig. M110, its companion galaxy, was also easily detected. M42, the Great Nebula in Orion, is guaranteed to knock one's socks off due to the refractor's superior contrast! There is an eerie 3-D effect to its wisps and tendrils. The f/8 ratio is surprisingly free of expected gobs of chromatic aberration. Only very bright objects at high power show minor blue fringing. But the Baader Fringe Killer and Moon & Sky Glow filters stacked together in the diagonal makes short work of that issue and boosts planetary/lunar details. But even without the filters lunar and planetary images are impressive. One night of exceptional "seeing" I caught fleeting glimpses of Saturn's Enke Minima in the ring ansae. Cassini's Division extended fully around the ring system, and 4 of Saturn's moons are regular features. Mars' ice caps, Syrtis Major, &etc., are identifiable targets with red filters. April 17, 2015: I finally recovered Jupiter's much faded Great Red Spot that had eluded me for nearly three seasons. It was encircled in a whitish cloud plodding along in a faint and most irregular South Equatorial Belt (SEB). A sharp black dot was also easily observed crossing in the NEB. Likely Io's shadow though I neglected to find the moon itself crossing Jupiter's face. I was more interested in the occultation of Ganymede by Callisto occurring at the time. A very short event! That night's "seeing" was exceptional for my locale, though still not perfect. After a 3-star alignment on a partly cloudy night I easily snared both Ceres and Vesta, our largest asteroids, in the same 32mm field of view! A once in a lifetime occurrence. I simply keyed in the R.A. and Dec. as determined from Stellarium and the GOTO slewed exactly to where they were. The GOTO is loaded with features and utilities which will aid you, especially if imaging is your forte. The only real shortcoming of the instrument is the focuser. It could use one of better quality, but it keeps the package selling price low. I disassembled the focuser, removed the gum they call focuser grease and lubed it with Plumbago grease (70% petroleum jelly, 30% No.2 flaked graphite home-brew mix). Then I adjusted the two tiny Allen screws atop the focuser casting, and also eased up on the focusing knob tightness. Voila! No more image shift and it racks in and out butter smooth. To make the entire package absolutely perfect though, I may someday upgrade and replace the stock focuser with an Orion 2-speed Crayford focuser ($147 through Amazon). That would give a nice "research grade" feel and performance to the refractor. But it is no longer a necessity item. I am a veteran amateur astronomer of 34 years. This is one of the best overall (commercial) instruments I have owned. Not one second thought or regret. If you can handle the size you will not regret your purchase either. I promise you will also be "King of the Walk" at any star party with what has been affectionately referred to as the "yard cannon". It is truly a spectacular value for the price.
