  • This little scope has revived my interest in astronomy
Style: Travel Scope 70 DX
I've had a 8" diameter dobsonian telescope for about 25 years but wanted a smaller scope I could take camping when I didn't feel like dragging the heavy, 4 foot long one with me. I also wanted one I could use as a spotting scope for birding. There are only two things I don't like about this scope. 1) tripod is way to wimpy. Even on a name brand heavier-duty tripod, it's less stable than a dobsonian. The tripod it comes with is barely adequate. It works best if placed on a sturdy table with the legs extended just far enough to make it less tippy. 2) There is some lense flare when looking at Mars, but this is to be expected for this price of scope. There is also some minor purple fringing around the edge of the moon, but the moon looks so gorgeous thru it that you forget to notice. Now for what I like: 1) Portability - doesn't kill my back to haul it outside. Sets up in minutes. So easy to take outside, I use it all the time. I'd only haul my big scope out a couple times a year because it was too heavy. 2) The moon looks so AWESOME thru this scope!!! 3) Jupiter: you can see several of the moons. I haven't been able to make out any of the color bands as I kinda can with my bigger scope, but that's to be expected due to the size/cost of this one. 3) Saturn: It's my favorite planet. Even though it looks tiny in this scope, you can see the rings and it's beautiful. I was able to see the nebula in Orion's sword from the city (I live on the outskirts of Salt Lake City) It was really beautiful on one especially dark night, but most nights it's not dark enough to see it well. I haven't been able to see other nebulas I've looked for. I expect that when I'm able to get away from the city lights I'll be able to see more nebulas and galaxies. (Nebulas and planets thru backyard telescopes don't look like most photos. You don't see the colors. Nebulas look like gray clouds. They can still be beautiful tho). The eyepieces feel cheap, very light weight, but are surprisingly good. Better than I expected for the price. They have enough eye relief that They work ok with my eyeglasses, but I prefer to take my glasses off when looking thru the scope. I haven't tried the digiscoping adapter yet, but I've experimented with a similar one on my other scope. Digiscoping is tricky and often not all you hope it'd be, but you might get some good photos of the moon. I haven't really tried it as a spotting scope yet, other than to look at some leaves at the top of a tree, and expect it'll be good for that. I'm considering buying a zoom eyepiece for that. All in all, I think this is an amazing scope for the price. Too bad the tripod isn't as good as the scope. If you can get a heavier tripod, you'll love this scope, especially if you can find some dark skies. But even from the city, the Moon, Saturn & Jupiter are so amazing thru this scope. ... show more

  • Excellent so far!
Style: Travel Scope 70 DX
Initially, I bought a cheaper plastic knock off which barely worked, overly complicated to set up because of its cheap production. Cut to an episode of Big bang theory where one of the characters was using a Celestron telescope for an experiment. I saw the brand before but know nothing about quality telescopes; I returned the cheap telescope and paid a $40 difference for this telescope. Just taking it out of the box, I could feel the quality is much higher than the original one I bought. The body is heavy high quality materials, the eyepieces are actually metal as opposed to plastic coated in chrome. As soon as I set it up, I was able to get a clear view, even the cellphone adapter is made of metal. I am looking forward to using this at night seeing what I can see and capture. My only complaints are the quality of the tripod and travel bag are not great but the tripod is slightly better than the one that came with the knockoff. Recommended for beginners to learn on. ... show more

  • Great scope, especially with upgrades
Style: Travel Scope 80
80mm Travel Scope – Four Stars I really like this scope. It is light weight [12 lbs. total with new mount & accessories] and portable, it’s a perfect grab-n-go. However, there are three significant things that I changed to make it work better for me personally, and you may want to consider these as well: (1) the finder scope, (2) the tripod and (3) the two eyepieces. I replaced the finder scope with an APOLLO 6x30 Right Angle Finder Scope for $28 (Amazon); I replaced the tripod with a combination of an Orion 52587 VersaGo E-Series Altazimuth for $80 and an Orion 5052 Dovetail L-Bracket for $35 (both from Amazon); and I replaced the eyepieces with a single Celestron 8mm-24mm zoom for $64–now about $80–(Amazon). All totaled, with the original scope at $90, my all-in cost (including shipping) is very near $300 for a very workable scope; and I still have the original travel bag which can be employed for various uses, though it is no longer suitable for carrying the whole revised kit. I now have slow motion control on a stable platform with a single zoom eyepiece and a right angle finder scope so that I do not have to contort my body/neck to use it. (OK, so I did change it up quite a bit [see photos], but the scope itself is still the same!) By way of just a few examples of what can be seen with this modified instrument, I have been able to find and identify the following objects: (1) Moon with good crater views at the terminator, (2) Jupiter with four moons and a hint of the bands, (3) Saturn & rings with dark space between the rings and the planet, (4) Mizar/Alcor resolved into Mizar A, Mizar B and Alcor and (5) Andromeda Galaxy. All this from my suburban house with, in my estimation, class 4-5 Bortle skies (edge of a medium sized city of 100,000). (PS: The scope comes with a 45-degree diagonal, but due to personal preference I switched to a 90-degree. Still, the original 45-degree works fine and some may prefer it. To change this too, the cost is probably around, say, $15-$20.) UPDATE #1: OK, the right angle finder scope is turning out to be a no-go! Cannot focus well, and pretty dim in any case. So I kept the holder from the right angle finder scope and inserted a laser pointer (~$20). But I had to go to Ace Hardware to buy some longer screws (thread = M4-0.70). This works better, but my cost is now up to about $320 +/-, plus some time setting it all up. I will continue to UPDATE as needed. UPDATE #2: As it originally came, the right angle finder scope holder had three concentric screw holes on the back end of the tube, but only one on the front end of the tube. So I took it to the local shop that works on plastic and had them tap in two more holes on the front of the tube (thread M4-0.70). Then, I bought some nylon screws (Scopestuff online) to use on all six holes in the tube of the holder. Then I reinserted the laser pointer into the holder and it now works great! The photos show this latest version. My cost is now about $350+/- (PSS: The pictures also show a cell phone holder (~$20) attached to one of the legs. This type of holder is actually made for bikes, but they work great on tripod legs.) This is a matter of personal preference, and is therefore not included in the discussion/costs above, but it sure is handy when using an astronomy app, e.g. Stellarium, which itself costs about $10.) ... show more

  • Decent quality viewing. Terrible tripod!
Style: Travel Scope 70 DX
Not a bad telescope. Pretty clear view. Tripod is super flimsy. I know this a "travel" setup but do yourself a favor and get a bit beefier tripod. Any slight wind or bump it shakes bad or gets off target. Viewfinder scope is kind a pain, not very useful, the view through it is upside down.
