Description

Zoe must figure out how to keep a giant kitten safe in this magical adventure about change, expectation, and accepting all for who they truly are—regardless of shape or size. Zoe named the kitten Pipsqueak, because she was so tiny, and promised to always take care of her. Then the kitten grew. And grew. Now she’s bigger than a horse—and talking as well! Fleeing into the woods to escape the curious eyes of the Internet, Zoe and her best friend, Harrison, must keep the giant cat hidden as they desperately search for a way to return her to normal size. If they don’t succeed, Pipsqueak may never be safe again. But why did she grow so large in the first place? And what if trying to change her back leads to even greater danger? Read more

  • Inspires empathy development and generosity in children
I love the theme of a girl having the power to bring out magic in others and facilitate the capacity of others to reach their potential. I am sending this book to my granddaughter for Christmas.

  • Fun read about responsibility and magical animals.
Series Info/Source: This is a stand alone book. I borrowed a copy of this on audiobook from my library. Thoughts: I listened to this on audiobook and it was a fun audiobook to listen to. It is a cute middle grade fantasy about family, friends, and magical animals. I have picked up a couple middle grade reads again lately and I am finding they just aren't for me, but that doesn't mean this wasn't a good story. I think I enjoyed middle grade reads more when my son was in that age group and also reading these types of books. The story follows Zoe who finds a small kitten that she names Pipsqueak. She gets reluctant permission to keep Pipsqueak from her parents...and then Pipsqueak starts to grow and talk! Zoe has promised to take care of Pipsqueak and she ends up trying to hide the changes in Pipsqueak from her parents. Things get more complicated when other pets start displaying strange magical features as well. This was a cute middle grade read. The magical animals were adorable. Zoe has a decent relationship with her family and a close friendship with Harrison, her best friend. The themes in the book are about taking responsibility for your commitments and coming of age. There is a lot about friendship and family and change as well. Zoe is very sad that her older brother is going off to college and has to learn that change can be a good thing. There are some fun twists at the end of the book and I enjoyed finding out why the animals changed even if it felt a little far-fetched. This is definitely intended for a middle grade audience and I don't think adults will enjoy it as much. The writing pattern, concepts, and plot are fairly simple. It is a well written and fun read that I think kids of all ages will enjoy. My Summary (4/5): Overall this isn't my favorite Durst book, I prefer her young adult and adult novels. However, it was a fun and cute read that I think kids will enjoy. There are positive messages throughout the story and the whole book has a positive feel in general. There's a lot in here about family, friendships and growing up...and of course a giant magical talking cat who was incredibly adorable! I probably won't pick up more of Durst's middle grade books, but I will definitely continue to seek out her adult and young adult novels. Durst is an excellent writer that I enjoy reading. ... show more

  • Great book for kids and anyone actually..
A great adventure for the younger reading audience but I think after reading this, even young adults or some adults would find a lot to enjoy in this book. Its has a lot of positive themes and fun characters both human and animal that we meet along the way. Its an adventure that you are glad to be on and one that goes how you would hope it would leaving everyone satisfied by the end of this adventure that you never quite want to end. Our main heroine of the book Catalyst, is the recently turned 12 year old Zoe who loves animals and is always trying to take care of them only for the experiences to go bad. So when she finds a tiny spec of a female kitten that she properly names 'Pipsqueak' her mother is less than accepting of her taking in another animal to take care of. But she agrees and our adventure starts from there. It turns out that the cat Zoe found is not an ordinary cat. It is growing daily, larger and larger than any cat known to exist. And as if it's great size wasn't enough to marvel about it can also talk and read. Little by little other strange occurrences of animals with mutations start to get noticed. A mouse with butterfly wings and a green colored multi-tailed dog who all join our adventurers (Zoe and her best friend Harrison) eventually. Zoe has to spend all week trying to hide her ever growing giant cat from her family before deciding that she has to find out why this is happening and what she can do to get her cat back down to normal size before she is noticed and gets taken away from her. And a great adventure that kids of all ages will enjoy takes place from there. The mission to find her Aunt who seems to understand what is going on. Why these animals are all changing like this, what can be done to fix this and to accept that change isn't such a bad thing after all. I highly recommend this book. It was a great read and I think it has a lot of good lessons and morals in it too along with the fun adventure that is just a nice added plus. Themes of responsibility, friendships, trust, accepting things that are different, not judging creatures by their appearance, family bonding and imagination. It's all here and it's well put to words in the book. There is really very few moments that are stretched out or padding. Everything connects together properly and you are always wanting to know what happens next. The resolution to the book is also very fulfilling. I like what we find out and what was behind it all along and the way all the problems are dealt with leaving one very satisfied when we finish the book. Sadly, we never find out what ever happened to that flying poodle that was captured early in the book but I guess that will be an adventure for another day. So if you ever wanted to have an elephant sized talking giant cat as a pet and friend to ride on and have a BIG adventure with, well have I got the book for you! Check it out. Nothing bad found here. Great book. Hope to see more where this came from by Sarah Beth Durst in the future. ... show more
