Description

Review "Best of all, Cooling managed - in an era of brightly shining guitar stars - to glow with a unique creative energy" -- Don Heckman, Los Angeles Times "Jazz guitarist looks good, sounds even better" -- Mark Ruffin, Chicago Sun-Times "Joyce Cooling at her best - warm and swinging" -- The San Francisco Chronicle About the Artist When Joyce Cooling met Jay Wagner the two instantly discovered their songwriting compatibility and have been working together consistently ever since. At first, Cooling played straight-ahead jazz on her Bay Area gigs and then later joined Wagner on the Brazilian music circuit where they expanded their reach beyond the Bay by playing in numerous exotic cities like Manila, Guadulajara and Cartagena. Cooling gained further credibility as a jazz player by appearing with giants like Stan Getz, Joe Henderson, Airto and Charlie Byrd. Ruben Moura and Helio Garcia are both natives of Santos, Brasil. They are best known to San Franciscans for their work with fellow Brasilian Claudio Amaral and the very popular band Viva Brasil.

  • Fantastic debut album!
I always loved Joyce Cooling and thought I had all of her music. I came across this old gem and was pleasantly surprised. If I hadn’t bought all her other music already, from this album, I would be a fan. Smooth, Latin vibe and energy. I love it.

  • A great talent!
Joyce Cooling is a great talent. On this, her debut album she shines. The refreshing individuality is exilerating. The musicans she surronds herself with also speaks of her talent. Her subsequent 6 albums show that this was just the beginning of what has turned into a lasting career. Although each album is somewhat different from the previous one, the unique style and freshness remains and thrills. ENJOY !!! ... show more

  • Joyce Cooling is simply brilliant, what an incredible talent
What a guitarist and song writer, Joyce Cooling is simply brilliant, what an incredible talent, to think she recorded this CD when she was 19 years old.

  • Doesn't Seem Like A Joyce Cooling CD
Most were cameo songs from other artists...felt like this was not a Joyce Cooling CD. Should have previewed it and pay attention to the title....

  • Her Best Recording
The one and only time I saw Joyce Cooling perform live was in early 1991 at the long-gone Bon Appetit jazz club in Westwood Village near UCLA. At that time, "Cameo" was her only release, and she and Jay Wagner pressed it independently. I bought this CD from her at the gig, and still have it to this day. Apparently, the newer re-mastered version has an extra tune, "Dori", which was not on the original CD that I have. Probably more for sentimental reasons than anything else, this is my favorite recording of hers. Her sound definitely became more refined and more radio-friendly over the years, but this is the CD of hers that I always come back to. In the years after this release leading up to today, she has become identified as a "smooth jazz" artist, a genre that I'm not a fan of. But this recording is not smooth jazz at all...it's sort of experimental in a way. The "jazz meets Brazil meets 80s pop" sound only could have happened when she recorded this in 1988. The bare-bones production recorded on analog tape only adds to the sonic uniqueness, in the best possible way. ...and it does bring back memories of that smoke-filled little jazz club in Westwood all those years ago where I saw her playing her heart out. And she wasn't playing "smooth jazz"! Recommended CD. ... show more
