Description

The Cabinet of Natural Curiosities is one of the 18th century’s greatest natural history achievements and remains one of the most prized natural history books of all time. Though scientists of his era often collected natural specimens for research purposes, Amsterdam-based pharmacist Albertus Seba (1665–1736) was unrivalled in his passion. His amazing collection of animals, plants and insects from all around the world gained international fame during his lifetime. In 1731, after decades of collecting, Seba commissioned careful and often scenic illustrations of every specimen. With these meticulous drawings, he arranged for the publication of a four-volume catalog, covering the entire collection from strange and exotic plants to snakes, frogs, crocodiles, shellfish, corals, birds, and butterflies, as well as now extinct creatures. This reproduction is taken from a rare, hand-colored original. The introduction supplies background information about the fascinating tradition of natural collections to which Seba’s curiosities belonged. Read more

  • Gorgeous art
I'm using these multi-varied natural history plates in my collage work. They would also be beautiful framed.

  • Dimensions Falsely Advertised - don't bother purchasing
Stated dimensions of book on Amazon (today, as well as when ordered): 16.14 x 8.86 x 6.42 inches. Actual dimensions: 8.7" x 6.37" x 1.625". So expect a book that is less than half the stated face area (and half the size of the original Taschen version). Once margins are accounted for, the largest single-page plates are noticeably smaller than a half-sheet of standard US paper. Yes, ISBN is verified, but the book is smaller than the typical college textbook. For an art book that I had to wait seven months to receive, that is criminally disappointing. Having the Huffington Post gush on the wraparound flyleaf about the "eye-popping displays" is just pouring salt into the wound. Many plates are presented horizontally on the vertically-oriented pages, leaving substantial white space on each such page. Other plates are reduced even more to two per page, with dimensions 2.25" x 3.5" per plate. I didn't know my eye could get a hernia until it tried to squeeze these tiny images into focus! Hundreds of species are smaller than my pinky nail. It's less like an art book and more like a shrunken postage stamp collection. If you buy this, order a 5X magnifying glass to view it with. Expect that not to help with two-page spreads as some species are just lost in the binding. Not recommended for art aficionados. Way to celebrate your 40th anniversary, Taschen! ... show more

  • Might not be what you think it is!
Don't get me wrong- this is a fantastic book! The illustrations are. amazing.HOWEVER, this particular book is not the oversized coffee table book that is an inspiration to look at, but rather a small (emphasis on SMALL) version of the beautiful book with which I'm familiar. It probably gave the measurement in the description and I was just so excited to see this incredible book at such a low cost that I didn't notice. So pay attention! I was sad to see how small it was, and sad to return it, but it was not what I wanted. ... show more

  • Much smaller than advertized.
I ordered this book nearly a year ago so I was thrilled when I got the shipping notice. When the book arrived, I thought I had been shipped the wrong package. It is a much smaller book. I had heard about people using the pages to decorate their homes with biological studies. These pages are much smaller than the frames I bought for the project. Give the wait and the price, I'm not very happy even though the book is beautiful. ... show more

  • Dimensions are wrong
The book is roughly 6x9 and not 16x9 as description states.

  • Wrong dimensions in listing
Listing says the edition is ‎6.42 x 16.14 x 8.86 inches, but it is not. This is a smaller edition which is why the price is so low.

  • Fantastic COMPACT studio book for artists
I received EXACTLY as advertised. Taschen smartly delivers same books (mostly the same) with buyer able to choose extra large or compact and pay accordingly.
