  • INDISPENSABLE but loses feature in the miniaturization
I've had the Robotoolz > porter·cable 5-point laser that this tool is based on for 8 years or so. It finally died after 7-8 years of abuse. The model/s this is based on used to 'lock' the laser once it was done auto-leveling. This new mini-me model does not. This shouldn't be a huge problem but i'm taking off a star because of it simply because with my old unit, it would NOT wobble around when walking near it and this one is in constant pendulum mode so will wobble/wiggle with any microscopic vibration. FYI: there is no 'magic' to the 'auto leveling' it doesn't use servo motors etc; it's simply a pendulum :-D on the higher-end models where you can hear a pulse like a motor doing adjustments, it's simply a mechanism that releases then grabs then releases then grabs the pendulum so when it's done the pendulum is locked in place and you don't get a wobbling laser dot. There are some good points brought up in one of the low-star reviews that are valid and stooped on bosch's part for having some gross errors in the manual: 1. it would seem that there is no longer a 'mode' for calibration; it is *always* in calibration mode. I owned the older model that this device is based on; it had a pendulum 'grabber' that would 'tick tick tick' while it was bobbing around and when it was happy that it was done, it would hold the laser beams solid so you wouldn't get the bobbing and wobbling as you walked around on the floor near the device. IGNORE the step how to get into and out of calibration mode and i'm quite sure it will work as described in the manual. 2. the ' tripod mount is built into the multi-purpose attachment. this is the same as the older brother to this device as well. 3. it's true that because the laser goes through a few prisms in the path out of the device (it's a very smart design because it make sure that the five beams will always be perfectly normal to each other), the dot will a) have diffraction interference dots and b) will get larger the farther away you are. with respect to 3, the center dot will get pretty big at distance, but it will a) have a CENTER and b) have smaller and smaller dots going away from the center; example the center dot might be ¾ inch diameter but the 6th interference dot left or right of center will be only ' " diameter. You can get a very decent level from the horizontal offset dots and you can get a very decent plum from the vertical offset dots. it's not perfect but it works perfectly well. i've used the older brother to this device for 8 years (finally died after using it literally in a puddle of cement), and i will miss the locking feature that the 'calibration' function was made for, also since the 'overthrow' function of the power button (you would push PAST on), to engage calibration mode, was also used to defeat the auto power down function, i'm not sure if that's possible on this model and that will suck. It would be FAIR to rate a THREE based on the sloppiness in the manual not 'getting' that there is no longer a calibration mode but that you CAN in-fact still CALIBRATE the friggin' thing, you just need to get past the bug in the manual, but i think dropping the fancy wobble grabber will likely make this model more reliable long-term. You can also defeat the auto-off (20 min) function by turning the unit on then off then back on immediately.. it will blink fast for 2 seconds to confirm the auto-off was 'disabled' (quotes because it will shut off after 8 hours!). From a 'construction' standpoint I would be dead-in-the-water; i pretty much literally use the 5-point laser for every single thing i build; it's fantastic for putting in garage doors (4-5 i've done), entry doors (about half a dozen), kitchen cabinets (dozens in several kitchens), tile floors; many; the square function is priceless. you can use the strap to strap onto a 2x4 and with this new model, it has 2 holes in the removable base to SCREW to a wall, then project a dot onto the NEXT stud and use as a reference to drill a hole; you can get a PERFECTLY horizontal set of holes for beautiful results when putting in wiring, or you can use a pitch offset (drill each hole ' inch lower than the previous and get a perfect ¼" per foot slope!) There is NO other way to make sure counter top (cabinets below) are at the same height than using this type of tool. It's also priceless for getting doors perfectly plumb; you can get things to 1/32" over 8' really easy, that's not so easy with even a 4' level. in a word: INDISPENSABLE -awr ... show more

  • Good enough but rough around the edges
Used this on a few jobs, not a miracle worker but it tells you what you need. Robust enough, but doesn't inspire tremendous confidence. Price was right enough at an intermediate price point for the market, but expected the Bosch brand to offer what it could afford to and I think it fell short of the mark. I would buy it again, but not be overjoyed at the prospect, and would be tempted to look strongly at the higher end offerings out there if you are really in the business. If you only need it a few times a year, but you want something reliable, I think this will do the trick, as the core functionality is good enough. The base is not quite what you wished it was mostly in that the magnets are marginal, and I just hope the thing never goes out of whack because the adjustment process looks like a PITA. The laser is not particularly crisp, but it is bright enough, and the batteries store well when not in use, so it functions reliably between jobs without having to be paranoid about extra batteries. My biggest gripe is that the pouch is way too small, you have to really fuss and shove the thing in there while the rubber grip on the instrument is fighting you back, makes it so you don't want to bother to put it away in the padded pouch, which in turn makes it more likely to suffer unnecessary abuse and die a significantly earlier death. Even more room beyond that needed to actually fit the thing would have been nice, so a laser card, pencil, sharpie and even a post-it pad or some note paper could be kept with it. The belt loop also has much stupidity built into it. I am keeping an eye out for a substitute pouch at a camera shop or surplus store, I wish I had started looking when I first got the thing, as it's amazing how much a seemingly minor detail like a pouch can significantly diminish the usefulness of an entire relatively well-made product. The while the crappy pouch certainly made me have less faith in the whole package, and I feel like I am being an idiot every time I hang the laser from a pipe or stanchion using the included magnetic base, but so far it hasn't fallen or been crushed in the tool box through lack of protection, and the rest has performed well enough, so there ya have it. It should be three stars, but because I've been lucky so far so it gets four. :P ... show more
