Bookkeeping is not a sexy topic but when you are managing a business like I am, suddenly you need to know how it works in the fastest, simplest terms possible. This book, to me, is a cornerstone for running any business. The owner and anyone who has anything to do with operations or management should read this book. Foundations and builds from there. It defines a lot of terms that we've heard but maybe don't understand, reviews the difference between bookkeeping and accounting, common mistakes, and what to do when you are faced with them, and more. There are even knowledge assessments for review. Even though the title of the book is "Bookkeeping", it really should be "Business 101". There are plenty of practical examples involving sales, customer invoices, payments, purchases, returns, inventory, expenses, and accounts payable. Each chapter includes an assessment test followed by an answer section that explains why each answer is correct. This helped me check whether I actually understood the material instead of simply recognizing the terms while reading. There is also a downloadable Chart of Accounts template, along with additional worksheets and reference materials. This book offers a well-written, thorough, and methodical overview of bookkeeping practices. It’s technically rich, but written in language that’s easy to understand. It reads like a textbook, and indeed it would probably work best as a textbook. It might be a bit ambitious to think that someone could learn to be a bookkeeper simply by reading the book. The authors make a very important point at the outset, which is that today, software performs virtually every action they explain in meticulous detail. So, why the book? As they explain, a good bookkeeper must know WHY he or she is doing something, e.g., why does a purchase affect the cash asset and the inventory asset? If the bookkeeper doesn’t understand why such a transaction is journaled a particular way, he or she is at risk of letting accounting errors go unnoticed. That’s the value of this book. ... show more
