Description

Perfect Camping for You in New York State!Wilderness abounds in New York State. From the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean, from the Adirondack Mountains to the Catskills, from the St. Lawrence River to the Hudson, millions of acres of public lands are dotted with hundreds of campgrounds―but you probably only have a precious amount of limited time. Where should you go? When should you go? That’s what Best Tent Camping: New York State is for. With this book, authors Aaron, Cate, and Timothy Starmer help you make the wisest use of your time in the wilds of New York. Divided geographically into seven sections―Long Island, Catskills/Hudson Valley, Central/Leatherstocking, Adirondacks, St. Lawrence River, Finger Lakes, and Western―the book is a helpful reference for camping enthusiasts throughout the state. Historical tidbits, descriptions of wildlife and the occasional personal anecdote add flavor to the campground descriptions. Star ratings and maps make choosing the best place to pitch a tent a simple task. Making reservations online or blindly over the phone can put a camper miles from the restroom, stranded with no shade, or in the middle of a busy campground trail. Maps will help campers avoid those pitfalls, and wherever possible the authors have even recommended specific campsites for maximum privacy, spaciousness, or beauty. Read more

  • So good I bought it twice.
Format: Paperback
This is a great book. As the title says, it is specifically for tent camping in New York State. A tent camper knows that campgrounds are often more geared towards RVs than tents. A tent camper also knows there is a wide variety of tent camping styles. Car campers, hike-in campers, family camping, campers who like hiking, water sports, all have slightly different needs. The authors have carefully reviewed all the campgrounds listed, and give great detailed descriptions. How modern or rustic the facilities are, how well maintained the place is, how private or open sites are, etc. They give you a good idea of which sites are better for car camping and which are better for hike-in camping, which are more private, which have better views, etc. They even call out the few bad "to be avoided" campsites in otherwise good campgrounds. They do such a good job that I had to get the second edition when they updated the book. Again, great book. ... show more

  • Okay but out-of-date and odd omissions
Format: Paperback
We appreciated the specificity of the campgrounds that were reviewed, including helpful details about campsites and the overall strengths and weaknesses of a given place. But the authors don't explain why some popular destinations were left out: for instance, Hither Hills State Park, a well-loved ocean beach campground on Long Island. Do the authors know something about this place and others that failed to make their list? If so, readers could use that information. Also, keep in mind you'll need to cross-reference the contents with website reviews since the book's a few years old. ... show more

  • It was helpful but didn't have many options.
Format: Kindle
not very thorough. I had a book that had way more cgs in it and info and critiques. I sure wish I could find it. It even told you if they were treated for bugs.

  • Great reference for tent campers in NY!
Format: Paperback
I checked this book out of the library 5 times and then decided to buy my own copy! We have been to a few of the campgrounds and particular campsites that the authors mention and very much agree with their recommendations. This is a great book for tent campers that enjoy the quiet, rustic areas.

  • Printing error
Format: Paperback
The book title did not match the content. The title indicated New York State but when I open the book there was a map of Georgia and the rest of the pages were camping in Georgia. I’m sure this rarely happens but just for anyone who may encounter this problem I thought I should write a review.
