Description

The delightful holiday tale of Josie Taternall and her South Carolina bed and breakfast from "born storyteller" (The Washington Post) and New York Times bestselling author Lois Battle After her best friend's narrow brush with death, Josie decides that life is too short to let old grievances stand in the way of family togetherness. This year, she resolves, her three grown daughters - the girls she raised so carefully yet with such mixed results - will come home for Christmas. With her uncanny ear for Southern sensibility and her sharp-eyed wit, Battle gives us the perfect upstairs/downstairs comedy and a portrait of a family in all its tender, touching, and flawed glory that readers young and old will cherish. "Full of warmth, humor, and characters I completely adore - as delicious as a weekend at your favorite inn." -Dorothea Benton Frank, New York Times Read more

  • Thoroughly enjoyable
I didn't expect to like this book as much as I did. It's a quick read and got better as I got farther into it. Josie is a captivating heroine. She's had an interesting and sometimes difficult life as a military wife -- her husband reminded me of a Pat Conroy character -- but she hasn't allowed life to beat her down. But my favorite character is Cam, her oldest daughter. I loved their relationship and the way it developed and changed in the book, and I also enjoyed the prickly relationship between Cam and Lila. Battle writes character-driven books about the kinds of people we all know. I'm looking forward to reading more of her work. RECOMMENDED. ... show more

  • Family Dilemmas
Format: Kindle
Loved it. Very realistic and complex characters. Kept my interest until the end. Happy ending but not too contrived or melodramatic.

  • Interesting Charactors & Storyline
I liked the characters and their stories and I felt that the book had a good plot. However, why authors feel they need to switch back & forth in time & back & forth with the characters, I'll never know. I would just become intrigued by one of the daughter's situations, when the next chapter would go to a different time and different character. I would have preferred the story told in sequence and with one voice, not the separate voices of each daughter and Josie, their mother. ... show more

  • Not great but a good and a true book
Format: Paperback
Too many characters in too short a book leave the reader wishing for more depth -- the book jumps from mother Josie to the two older daughters, Cam and Lila, and never focuses on third daughter Evie at all -- but the story rings TRUE. As an Army brat (I even spent a good part of the summer of 1963 in Beaufort, SC, where the story is set), I can hear the truth in every line of dialogue between Josie and her war-hero husband, Bear. It's much more a story of a military family than it is of a Southern family, for all of the local color, but it's well worth a first, second, or even third read. ... show more

  • Great story
I love this author. First book of hers that I read was Storyville, a really great book. This book did not disappoint either, enjoyed every page. Plan to read more. Of her books.

  • Way better than other books of this genre
great writing, interesting, 3-dimensional characters instead of stereotypes, and never predictable. This book was wonderful and held my interest --highly recommended for those who enjoy Pat Conroy's books

  • So-so story about a disfuntional family
I read it to the end because it was like searching for a plot. None of the characters was ever completely developed and when one chapter would end with a cliff hanger, the next chapter was about somebody else in the family. It was disorganized and frustrating. There was an English teacher's list of discussion questions at the end. Boo! ... show more
