An engrossing tale for grown-ups on the nature of beauty, both fascinating and corrupting. When Coddie unintentionally delivers a fairy from a spell that held her prisoner, she does not realize how poisoned the wish is she gets in return. From repulsive and stinking of fish she becomes perceived as magnetically beautiful, which does not help her in her village. A young local lord saves her but soon it becomes apparent her destiny may be far greater . . .A caustic and flamboyant fairy tale. Read more

  • Ravishing beauty
Format: Hardcover
The book is, really really really amazingly good!!! I haven't read such a good comic for so long. The story is elaborated, well-written, and there is so many layers to this new fable-fairytale which is so full of metaphors. I just received it today and honestly can't not put it down, and finished it all in one sitting. The write/illustrator team did a mavelous job. Now... spoiler ahead*** However, the ending is a bit disappointed since we readers see Beauty as someone who wrecked everything on her way (not just by her cursed beauty, but also with her stupidity and inconsideration along with her over-proud on appearance), she still managed to harm people who used to be kindes to her (one of the rare woman who used to be kind to her - queen of the North, got killed indirectly by Beauty). And finally she just seemed to not suffered from any karma but just thrived and be the queen of happy ending. The reader was in a emotion roller coaster for the main character, first we pity her, then we're happy for her, then indifferent since she just seemed to be merely a pawn in a big game of the fairies, then feel angry, then feel bad again, and finally, was not convinced with the ending. I feel the writers want to empower feminine power but the main character is just not enough a good example. Hence I love everything, except the ending. I'll still give the book 5 stars because it was such a good read :) ... show more

  • Beautiful read
Format: Hardcover
I loved this book and the message. I finished it in maybe 2 hours? But I always go back to look at the art work. It's a beautiful colored graphic novel of a fairy tale-esque story. It's got a bit of magic, but mostly it focuses on defining what beauty means, how others might respond to it, and the good and bad of being both extremely unattractive and magnetically beautiful. ... show more

  • Great combo of ingredients
Format: Hardcover
RECIPE FOR A HUBERT KERASCOET TASTY GRAPHIC CASSEROLE BASIC INGREDIENTS >>> A piece of old-style fable. >>> A small piece of strong moral lesson. >>> A children-books graphic style verjus. >>> A bunch of spices. Please include the following: ~~ A pinch of strong coloured darkness. ~~ A tablespoon of sex . ~~ A teaspoon of nudity ~~ A handful of war and fights. ~~ Outrageously good but smoky heroes. ~~ Outrageously bad but disgusting villains. ~~ A sachet of naivety. ~~ A sachet of human stupidity. ~~ A sachet of wisdom. ~~ A pinch of good common sense. >>> Cooking oils ~~ A tablespoon of love-yourself oil. ~~ A tablespoon of epiphany oil. >>> Full-colour colouring. >>> Seasoning to your liking ~~ Salty lettering. ~~ Peppery vignettes. MARINADE Put your fable to marinate in a container, together with the moral lesson, an the verjus. Stir through. Now add half a litre of adventure, half of children-book graphics and the bunch of spices. Stir the fable trough, and let it stay overnight so the flavours get through. PREPARATION Take the marinated fable out of the fridge in the morning, put everything it in an earthy casserole, add the two types of oil and the colouring. Now is the time to add, raw, the different sorts of beautiful stuff. The recipe recommends those from the brand Food for Thought: }~Mind what you wish for. }~Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. }~Beauty ideals vary from culture to culture. }~Beauty is in the inside. }~Kingdoms were lost because of a woman's beauty. }~Unless you don't see yourself beautiful you won't believe you are. }~ Beauty is not what you wear is what you are. }~Beauty halo, also called halo effect. }~ What you see in the mirror and what other people see are different things. }~Only brutes put beauty at the top of women qualities. }~Women don't need to be beautiful to ha a decent relationship. }~Society is obsessed with superficial flitting beauty. Let the whole casserole simmer slowly for a few hours and until Beauty is ready. Before retiring from the stove, increase the heat for five minutes more. Season to your liking. Voila, the Hubert Kerascoet grown-ups casserole is ready. What a mindfully tasty and gorgeously plated casserole. Enjoy! TYPO IN THE SAUCE! "Beauty, you will be my Queen, and nothing can SEPERATE us." ... show more

  • Hauntingly beautiful story.
Format: Hardcover
If you like fantasy with a touch of darkness, this is your book. Set in a medieval time, a young maiden named Coddie is given the gift of beauty after releasing a trapped fairy. But as time goes by she begins to wonder if it is less of a gift and more of a curse. The story follows her as she goes through the pros and cons of her gifted beauty. ... show more

  • And definitely not for kids--but if you love fantasy and a hint of the Brother's Grimm darkness ...
Format: Hardcover
An INCREDIBLE story. I adore this artist's simplistic style--conveys so much with so little. And the plot, oh my goodness. I thought it was a going to be a fairly short comic but it was long, immersive, and rich. And definitely not for kids--but if you love fantasy and a hint of the Brother's Grimm darkness then you should get this book. ... show more

  • A beautiful and particular look at an aspect of the nature of men and women.
Format: Hardcover
The artwork in this is so beautiful. just so much to look at and pour over. The story is timeless I suppose but I wonder if it is very specific to a culture and time period...or maybe it isn't a nice thought to think that the things that happen in this story could happen anywhere currently. It is a story which definitely takes you on a long journey where sometimes you may cringe at going but there is lovely beautiful scenery along the way. ... show more

  • A Wonderful Graphic Novel
Format: Hardcover
I was SO EXCITED to find they had translated this book! It's everything I wanted it to be, the art is fantastic and whimsical and the story itself reminds me of all the real scary Be Wary fairytales of old. This book is definitely not suitable for a child. There is nudity, suggested rape, violence and strong language. Also good to know if certain themes are triggering or upsetting for the reader. However, these all contribute to the overall story about perceptions of beauty, greed, compassion and human nature presented in satirical extremes. The color palettes are very simplistic and do great to invoke mood and setting. The art style is understated in a way that really helps embrace the theme. ... show more
