    • Great boot, but...
Gonna give it 5 stars because I love it. The only problem I've had so far with this boot is the side zipper pull. I just called Bates customer service today and as soon as I'm ready to ship the boots back to them, they're going to replace them. The original reason I bought these boots was to test a theory I had (that theory may only apply to me specifically, but hey, worth a shot). The theory states that for every $10 I spend on a pair of boots, I'll get approximately 1 months use out of it. That was based on several consecutive purchases of $30 boots that lasted almost exactly 3 months of constant, hard use. So the theory goes that I should have gotten 12-17 months use out of these boots before something broke down ($120 on Amazon.com, $169.99 on Bates' website). While that didn't happen (owned them for about 7 months now, but keep reading), it should be noted that I took no action to maintain the boots, or even be careful with them; On one camp out I almost lit them on fire, then as I noticed the rubber smelling smoke from the fire I stuck my foot in a bucket of water. The water proofing did not fail, and the sole was perfectly fine, if a little melted. Honestly, I would have been happy if they sent me replacement zipper pulls with more beef to them. But replacing the entire boot because a single part failed? That right there is the definition of quality control. Based on the original product, my only qualm is the foam near the heel (takes a lot of cosmetic damage), and the small zipper pull. My recommendation to Bates is beef up the zipper pulls, and see what they can do to harden the foam near the heel. I would recommend the product to anyone looking for a good, waterproof, insulated, side-zip, boot that comes in wide sizes. ... show more

    • Solid all weather boot for public safety professionals.
As a 20+ year paramedic I've purchased a lot of boots over the years. The Bates line has provided me excellent comfort and long service life compared to similar styles by Rocky and Timberland and their prices are consistently lower than the other brands mentioned. These boots remain waterproof much longer than other brands and wear well. Traction is great in the snow and dirt but the soles are not very soft so they can be a little slippery when walking on wet floors immediately after coming in from the cold. I sometimes wear a wide shoe and usually took a wide in Rockies but I always purchase medium width in Bates. The boots will be a little tight at first but break in quickly and are perfect after a few hours of use. I tried the wide in this brand and style and found that they felt a little too loose after break in so I've stuck with medium width and have been very satisfied. Most of my Bates duty boots get reassigned to off duty work boots or motorcycle boots after they've been replaced by a new pair for work and some are still in use years after I've taken them out of work rotation. The boots are pretty stiff out of the box so I suggest wearing them off duty for several days to let them break in at short intervals rather than having sore feet for 12 or 24 hours on your first shift at work with them. ... show more

I have owned these boots for a year. I live north of Buffalo, NY and we get some serious winter weather. These are the best non-studded winter boots I’ve ever owned. They are warm, easy to get into and out of, waterproof, snow proof and sure footed even in dell snow. They run a bit small - I’m usually a 9 1/2 wide and I needs a 10 extra wide for a proper fit. Length is good, "extra wide" is not as roomy as I expected. If you are a 5E, the "extra wide" might be tight. Pro: -Have proven to be durable. -good quality -Tall enough for winter use (I don't like insulated winter boots when I'm working - too heavy and too warm) -Good quality zipper - works well -Waterproof. Gore-tex can be hit or miss and either be great or be "Leak-Tex". These are definitely water proof -Look good especially compared to junk boots like the RockRooster brand I ordered and sent back because the looked like $29 knock offs but cost $119. Con: -Needs a heel pull loop. Without one, I have to leave the laces loose to get the boot on even with the zipper wide open. Overall, these boots are excellent. Hope that helps! ... show more

    • Warm, truly waterproof and lasted 3 years with daily wear
The Bates GX-8 insulated and waterproof boots are fantastic. I purchased in 2016 for $132 (appears price has gone up abaout $30) and am glad I did. I have worn them for duty 5 days/week for 3 1/2 years. I wear these boots summer and winter and live in the mountains of Idaho. These boots have never leaked, even when in snow or walking in shallow streams and keep your feet warm. My feet don't seem overly hot in the summer. The boots polish nice for court, look professional and are comfortable (I have narrow feet). The soles have great traction in snow and ice and overall the boot weight is reasonable. I have had to replace the laces once. After heavy use, the boots finally gave out on the back of the boot wear the nylon connects to the rubber. Otherwise, I would make these boots last another year. I highly recommend these boots, considering the price, being truly waterproof and their durability. ... show more

    • Gx-8 Insulated Boot
I live in the desert and not only do I face extreme heat conditions but very cold ones as well. The Gx-8 boot keeps my feet warm in below freezing temperatures without a problem,(wool socks) yet never allowed too much heat build up in the hotter times of the year.(also wool socks) The sidezip provides an easy on and off system which does not force you to untie and retie after every use. Took little to no time to break in, ran 2 miles on the 1st wear, no blisters. Great pair of boots, will be buying more. Extremely comfortable, right out of the box! Smartwool brand socks suggested. Suggestion for people having trouble applying boot to foot with only zide zipper down. When puting on your Gx-8 boot instead of sticking your foot into the boot and making an attempt at stomping or stepping into it, as most people tend to do. This is not only going to apply unwanted to stress to the ankle support of your boots. Attempting to stomp and roll your foot back and forth at the same time also does not seem to be like a fantastic idea, especially if you can not afford to be down on an ankle injury. 1. Sit down 2. Slide foot into boot. (making sure to have no wrinkles in your socks this will help with blisters)(a wrinkle in your sock will cause blisters no matter the shoe/boot) 3.     • Very good boot with a great "walkability
Very good boot with a great "walkability." I found it very easy to move around in these boots, even easier than sneakers/trainers. Something about the design flows naturally with the movement of your foot. They had nice pronation support. The side zip was fantastic. But these went back because the width on the Extra Wide is much closer to a wide D than a 3E like claimed. In particular these crushed my toes and caused pain. I have a very square toe box so the mileage might vary for others. I would have bought set of Keens but for some reason that brand refuses to make a high soft toe boot in a wide. Wearing them around the house for a complete day did nothing to help. It was clear they were not going to break in to fit. I had really hoped these might make a great pair of winter hikers.     • Great Waterproof Boots
I've had a few pairs of Bates already, and when it was time to choose something waterproof for hiking, I was glad to see Bates had me covered. These boots are made with the quality I've come to expect from Bates. I can't say I was excited to pay $180 for a pair of boots, and you can certainly get much cheaper waterproof boots, but I knew I would get good quality and a boot that will last. They are quite waterproof as long as water doesn't come above the very top of the boot. The zipper and velcro work well and the waterproof flap between them folds out of the way and is quite comfortable to wear. They are fairly lightweight for what they are. The boot offers a fair amount of insulation but would still wear heavy socks for cold weather. ... show more

    • Very comfortable and waterproof
Love these boots they are very comfortable and sturdy. I work in a hangar and on a ramp everyday for ten plus hours in all weather. I expect to get four to six months out of my boots due to my work environment and the chemicals I am around and at this point these will last way longer. The hangar floor is heated so if I wear winter boots my feet are soaked in sweat in a matter of minutes. These are a good compromise in warmth, and being zipoff it is easy enough to put on another pair of socks. I also like the side zip feature because it makes putting on rain gear and insulated coveralls easier. I have worn these in rain, snow, and wash them off with a hose and at the most my feet will feel a little damp. But not to an uncomfortable point and they are always dry when I go to put them on again. ... show more
