  • Fantastic hill climber, Pulls more amps than advertised so check your battery
The 20" 500w peaks just under 1000w (1kw), so at 48v that means its pulling twice the advertised 10 amps draw (volts * amps = watts so 1000w/48v ≈ 20 amps). Love it but they should more accurately report the specs so they dont risk frying someone's battery.

  • Worth it.
Been using them for almost a year now with the odometer at 415miles and so far it is doing pretty good. I have used this kit to convert my manual bike into electric since commuting while trying to maintain 17+ mph everyday (because my commute forces me to drive with cars behind me) has started to wear me down significantly. The setup was a little annoying since the tools needed are specialized, some of the stuff couldnt fit on the bike, and the instructions were a little confusing, but it was dealt just fine. When I began running this setup through the gutter, it was surprisingly resilient and took medium offroading (i do occasionally) very well. I i even crashed my bike twice and the parts still functioned normally. Only complaint is that the throttle was on the cheap end and would take half a second to respond. The display i got along with this (EKD01) did not show the right percentage and I have to switch to it giving me a voltage reading for me to give an accurate reading. All in all, it was worth the wallet drain. 8.7/10 ... show more

  • Works Great, but a massive pain to install. Almost nothing was compatible with my bike.
So now that I have the final product installed and working, I can say that the product works great and performs as expected, but the installation process was a massive undertaking that I wouldn't recommend for the average person. I had to buy an extra $150 worth of parts to get it to fit. Took several trips to the local bike lab coop to seek advice, and I definitely a learned a lot about bike wrench-turning in the process, but I can't imagine most people would go through this type of effort to get it installed. I wish I had just bought a fresh ebike instead of doing my own. The included instructions are useless. I had to watch several youtube videos to learn how to complete the installation, and even those were spotty at best. Installation requires specialized tools that only an advanced bike enthusiast would likely have, including a chain whip, sprocket removal tool, bottom bracket removal tool, and cassette removal tool. they're only about $7 each ($30 total), but something to keep in mind if you plan on tackling this yourself. Additionally, I had to file/drill/modify several components to make them compatible with my frame, since many parts were a few mm off-centered once installed. My 160mm disc brake was not compatible with the kit. I had to downsize to a 140mm disc brake, resulting in me buying new disc, calipers, and caliper mount (~$50). Also loosing a small bit of brake performance from downgrading to a smaller size. My existing spindle was not compatible with the kit. I didn't have an extra 5mm on the existing spindle width to mount the PAS sensor on, so I had to purchase a new spindle (~$15) My existing cranks were star-bolt, and this kit is ONLY compatible with square bolt cranks, so I had to purchase a new set of cranks to be compatible with the kit (~$30). My existing frame did not have enough space in the triangle to mount the battery. It fits, but also requires an additional 3 inches of clearance to slide forward/backwards on the mounting bracket. I purchased the extra mounting bar, but it did nothing to help. The offered cargo rack also isn't compatible with most mountain bikes. I ended up purchasing a separate seat post cargo tray to hold the battery (~$40) The included gaskets were not appropriately sized for my handlebar, so I used a few old rags to add diameter and get the screen to mount. The kit is advertised as fitting 135mm forks, but the hub itself is 138mm, requiring me to use an angle grinder and mill-out 1.5mm from each side of the fork. This is not ideal, and also not entirely safe. fortunately, the part I milled is not load-bearing, so shouldn't be an issue. I reached out to customer support, and they recommended bending the frame 3mm to sit the hub. This worked, but ultimately caused all the other components to be 3mm off, requiring further frame modification. There is an impressive amount of wire length in the kit, in fact, too much to fit in the enclosed housing. I had to ziptie several of the cables to the frame to keep them tidy. All the screws included in the kit are garbage and will instantly strip. I had to run to home-depot and replace most of the included fasteners with American-made equivalents Pros: - great power and performance - smooth ride - comes with everything you need (sort of) - My 500W motor is enough to get me to 25mph on flat surface, full charge - parts are internally compatible with each other - headlight and throttle are a great addition - I love the LCD screed I upgraded to (SW2M58) Cons: - very difficult install - required replacing several components on my bike, adding about $150 to total cost - included instructions are worthless. I had to self-teach myself how to install - The kit advertises it's compatible with 135mm rear fork, but the hub is actually 138mm. - The battery has noticeable performance deficiency at around 40% charge, my max speed drops about 1mph for every 10% below 40%. - The battery capacity indicator is fairly inaccurate. it has about 20% charge inconsistency between heavy use and light use. At 0% charge I can still go another 20ish minutes. If I switch to PAS level 3, it instantly drops 20%. In retrospect, I wish I had just bought a new ebike instead of trying to convert my old bike. Since I had to replace several parts on my old bike and purchase new tools, I only saved ~$200 total by doing my own conversion, and that's not worth the time, effort, and frustration needed to troubleshoot and wrench-turn this kit. ... show more

  • Very well built kit
Very nice kit. This is my second kit and it seems just as powerful as my 1500w AW hub motor
Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2026 by S. W. Heard

  • It works well
The kit was not difficult to assemble and it worked well. I made a couple of issues for myself but nothing that couldn't be fixed. I live in a hilly area and I use my bike for basic transportation so My main goal was to be able to climb these hills like they weren't there. The bottom line is that it does that and there are no issues. Reading the listing material I understood it to say that the individual gears were "adjustable" but they are not. You may select between them but there are no "adjustments" you can make. Also I picked the EKD01 display because it was blue tooth and so I figured I could use the Bafang go app. Unfortunately the only thing it would connect to is Varstom's app and it only offered maps and directions but collected and stored no info about the trip the bike or the rider and when you turn it off it forgets what was on the display. So for me the Bluetooth connectivity was useless and disappointing. Also I anticipated being able to get battery information beyond the voltage but again I am told that simply isn't posable with what I have, I got the 13AH battery. so no battery info from the bike. Also I had issues with the display from day one, beyond my disappointment It was unstable and it ultimately wouldn't turn on so it went back and they did replace it. There was customer support and they did communicate with me and like I said they did replace the display for me. All in all it works solidly and the kit seemed to be put together well. There have been some disappointments but some of that may have been my own misunderstandings, maybe. ... show more

  • Disappointment
The controller was a dud, luckily the hub motor worked

  • Strong motor, complete package for a tidy installation
The rear hub motor is made by Bafang, which we have used for a few years in another mid-drive DIY conversion. Their products are very good. The wheel is built up by this third party seller. The first shipment came quite fast via Prime, but when it came damaged, understandably they wanted lots of photos before they agreed to exchange it. They exchanged it, but they were in absolutely no hurry the second time to send the replacement, and it took like 10-14 days before I received it. Also, the first shipment came with a front harness that was too short, and luckily when they sent the replacement, the second harness was proper length (lesson: make sure you know the distance from your front end parts to the motor controller unit/box and that it matches what they show in the specs for length of the cable in the set. Especially important if you are doing something nonstandard like a tandem). Comes with everything else you should need, down to the little project box to house the controller and the extra cable, zip ties, headlight, and all hardware. If you get the 750W motor, which is powerful and smooth, buy the torque arms so you don't have any issues with the motor loosening in the dropouts. Got the standard DZ40 display for this, which has all you need, easy to use. Makes the install clean and tidy on your bars. I have the 500C display on another bike, also great, gives you all the data (like voltage, watts consumed etc) but takes up a little more space. Value-seems like a good deal, but when you add in a high capacity battery, battery mounts, and a display upgrade, the price starts to approach a complete e-bike, though with this you're getting bafang quality, a large capacity battery, and your own custom install. ... show more

  • The Seller Isn't Bafang, The Kit Doesn't Doesn't Fit Most Road Bicycles
Most folks that will want to install this should know that most bicycles built and sold in the US for the last several decades have rear dropouts - the structure that supports the rear axle and wheel -- that are 135 mm wide. These motors measure 138 mm wide and do not fit. The seller will advise you - other reviewers have described this, please read all comments -- to bend, grind or otherwise modify the rear dropouts so that the motor fits, claiming it is a "standard, supported modification". This is a lie - I work in the industry and that advice is dangerous and could get you hurt. Think about it - the e-bike motor makes 10 times more power than your legs, and modifying a structure that was designed only for the stress of your legs makes it more likely to fail. Professional shops will always use a device called a 'torque arm' to distribute part of that stress into the frame members - this kit does not include one -- which concentrates all of that stress into the slots in the frame's dropouts - again, a hazardous shortcut that only exposes you to danger of injury. When I asked them to refund my money, they advised me to resell the product to someone else who wasn't aware of the hazards -- the seller has no ethics whatsoever. I have spent hours on the phone trying to explain to Amazon of about the fact that the seller misrepresents themselves as being Bafang when they are a third party, that they misrepresent the product as being widely compatible when it is not, and they advise users to modify their cycles in ways that are dangerous, and Amazon has declined to act to protect their customers. These folks should not be permitted to use this platform to sell a hazardous product, but it's all about your money, and not about you. Unless you have advanced experience, skills and required tools, find qualified help to convert your bike safely. ... show more
