Description

From New England to the Deep South, photographers Susan Daley and Steve Gross have captured more than 100 forgotten buildings along America's old auto routes. Isolated in full-color and black-and-white portraits, the roadside cafés, feed stores, grange halls, juke joints, and general stores are a poignant reminder of the ingenuity of local building practices and working- class culture during the years between the Civil War and the Great Depression. With their humble beauty and distinctive character, these once-useful structures infuse the American landscape with a strong sense of place. This collection of buildings preserves a sampling of our country's architecture heritage and encourages travelers to slow down and notice the details. Read more

  • vernacular buildings
Format: Hardcover
I like the square format and heavy paper displaying color and B&W photographs of forgotten and overlooked buildings large and small across the US. Structures are identified by location and purpose, but their larger stories are left open to the imagination.

  • Redefining America based on its forgotten architecture.
Format: Hardcover
When these two started publishing a dozen books ago, with Old Houses, they heralded a shift in our nation's taste. We were moving away from recognizing our history through endless reproductions (Colonial Williamsburg) towards something more ephemeral: a way of "Living with the Past," as another of their book titles would put it, that allowed for the wear and tear of time (Williamsburg, Brooklyn). Unlike the Old World's endless repackaging, Daley and Gross acknowledged the sad beauty inherent in how old things' and places' mysteries change the way we see. They embraced and refined our American aesthetic. Of course, everything caught up with the way they saw things. Everywhere you look now, new products are sold in the settings that these two taught us to appreciate. Yet Daley and Gross have stayed true to their original vision, a search for the uniqueness of American experience as reflected in its truest, vernacular art forms. They've continued scouring our landscapes, both abandoned and overused, and looked deeper into their own images, for what speaks to our evolution as a nation, as a unique experiment in human creation and recreation. Here, in Backroads Buildings: In Search of the Vernacular, these restless authors have taken several bold new steps beyond their starting point as photographers. At a time of raw division in the nation, they force us to contemplate what we fail to notice: forgotten worlds hidden by the sides of old roads and little used streets. The weeds that define our existence as much as any formal garden; unfulfilled dreams common to rich and poor, suburbia and exurbia. They have pegged a side of life that pulls the north and south together as one beautifully tattered nation of weird dreams that honors nature's constant pull to quiet our aspirations. Places of the mind that stay the same no matter the state you're in. Most importantly, Sue Daley and Steve Gross have achieved this with an elegant grace, allowing these quiet examples of a shared past to speak for themselves. Talk about the power of the vernacular, and a true American eloquence. ... show more

  • A visual celebration and travel of the backroads and their buildings, of America's Eastern states,.
Format: Hardcover
The photographers of "Backroads Buildings" approach the vernacular architecture of a rural American landscape with a documentarian and sensitive understanding. The book shows the variety and uniqueness of the humble utilitarian buildings that appear along the byways in many states along the east coast. Dusty general stores, old wooden churches and barns, obsolete repair shops and other neglected buildings are photographed with respect, framed within their surrounding landscapes of lonely twisting roads. These images speak poignantly to a manner of life and community that has pretty much disappeared, and in some small way, present a portrait of America. ... show more
