I grew up playing NBA Jam in arcades, so I was excited to have the chance to own a compact version at home. This Arcade1Up countertop machine includes three classic basketball games: NBA Jam, NBA Jam Tournament Edition, and NBA Hang Time. For anyone who remembers these games from the arcade era, it is a fun and nostalgic package. Setup was extremely easy. The machine arrived nearly fully assembled, and the only part I needed to install was the handle, which screws into place. It includes both a power cable and AC adapter, so you can plug it into a standard outlet and start playing right away. There is also a battery compartment for four AA batteries if you want to use it somewhere without convenient access to an outlet. One of my biggest concerns was whether such a small machine would slide around while playing. I tested it on my granite kitchen countertop, and it stayed in place much better than I expected. It did move slightly during a full game, but when I checked afterward it had only rotated a few degrees. The unit has enough weight and sturdy enough feet to keep it reasonably stable during normal play. The controls are comfortable, and the compact design makes it easy to put in a kitchen, game room, office, or other small space. It is an excellent way to play old school NBA Jam games as a single player without needing a full size arcade cabinet. My only real wish is that it had a second joystick for two player games, but that is simply not the purpose of this particular machine. At $130 at the time of my review, I think it is a very fair price for three built in classic arcade basketball games. If you grew up loving NBA Jam or just want a fun, easy to set up basketball arcade game for your home, this is a fantastic option.

This is as big of a downgrade as you can get and arcade 1up should feel like criminals charging $150 for this. The screen is smaller, it washes out at any angle that’s not perfectly in line, it has the options for batteries which is a joke. Maybe nets you 20 mins of play. No light up marquee, smaller form factor and terrible physical controls. And yes it’s only a single player cabinet but you cannot choose which player to be which on some other games isn’t a big deal, but here you’re locked into the P1 position so you can’t have the PC partner jump off or use the P2 option for team lineup and it’s not switchable. Doesn’t seem to be dip switch settings either. Bottom line, unless you are desperate for a countercade pass on this until it comes down in price. I wouldn’t pay more than $60 for what you’re getting here. It was beyond disappointing. Seems like they are just getting rid of leftover parts to phase out the countercade line.

I've been a fan of Arcade1Up cabinets for years, and this countercade has been a fun addition to the collection. One feature I really appreciate is the flexibility of the power options. Unlike some older countercades I've owned, this one runs either from the included AC adapter or four AA batteries. That makes it easy to take to a friend's house, set out on a patio table, or play anywhere you don't have an outlet nearby. The battery life is about 5 hours, which is reasonable and will be weeks of casual play, especially if it's mixed use - sometimes plugged in and sometimes on battery. The compact size is part of its charm. It doesn't take over a room like a full cabinet, but it's still large enough to be comfortable for quick games. It also looks great sitting on a desk or shelf and inevitably becomes a conversation starter when people notice it. Unlike other Arcade 1up/Basic Fun cabinets, where the first step is a 60-90 minute assembly, this one comes ready to go. Just open the box and peel the plastic screen protector. It's a really nice box too, and would make a heck of a birthday present. Most importantly, NBA Jam feels exactly like it should. The controls are responsive, the emulation has been reliable, and it captures the fast-paced, over-the-top arcade gameplay that made the original so memorable. Whether you're reliving old memories or introducing someone new to the game, it's a surprisingly capable little machine, and much cheaper than the "full size" cabinets they offer, taking up a lot less space.

If you grew up playing NBA JAM, this countercade delivers a wonderful dose of nostalgia. The cabinet is compact enough for a desk, office, or game room while still capturing the look and feel of the original arcade experience. The controls respond well, the light-up marquee adds authentic arcade style, and the screen is bright with vibrant colors. Having both NBA JAM Tournament Edition and NBA Hang Time included provides plenty of replay value. Assembly is straightforward, and the machine feels sturdy once put together. Overall, this is a fantastic addition to any game room and a great way to relive two classic basketball arcade games.
