🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The Apple Watch Series 3 has garnered positive feedback from users who praise its functionality and feature set for its price point. Users appreciate the watch for its notifications, sleep tracking, customizability, and comprehensive health data tracking. However, concerns about its limited storage capacity and potential durability of the screen have been noted. The watch's inability to accurately record certain exercises for some users also detracts from its overall appeal. Despite these issues, the consensus suggests that it provides good value for those not requiring the latest model or extensive storage.

Pros

  • 🔔 Effective notifications and messaging capabilities on the go
  • 💤 Enhanced sleep tracking compared to using just a phone
  • ⌚ High customizability with watch faces and compilations for quick access
  • 📈 Comprehensive health and activity data collection

Cons

  • 💾 Limited storage capacity with only about 2 GB free post-setup
  • 🔄 Concerns over the lack of future updates beyond OS7
  • 🚶‍♀️ Inconsistent exercise tracking, particularly affecting women
  • 🔍 Screen durability could be an issue over time

Should I Buy It?

If you're seeking an affordable smartwatch with strong health tracking and notification features, and don't need extensive app storage or the latest hardware, the Apple Watch Series 3 could be a worthwhile purchase. It's especially recommended for users new to smartwatches or those upgrading from much older models. However, for those requiring more storage, reliability in exercise tracking for all activities, or future-proofing for software updates, considering newer models may be a better investment.

  • Overall good for a budget
I spent a lot of time watching reviews to figure out should I get an apple watch? If so which one? I looked at a lot of comparison videos and reviews between the 3, SE, and 6. I decided that since I just wanted it more for the basic things and I didn't want to spend a lot of money that a series 3 would be fine. I waited for a sale and decided it was worth the price to get it. I have had it a little over a week now. Here are my thoughts after this week or so: The Good: *notifications on your wrist -This feature is great! I am always out walking my dog and on occasion, he will see a squirrel and lose all his manners leaping with all his force. During times like this, my previous phone had flown out of my hand when he yanked his leash. Luckily, it didn’t get damaged. I recently got the newest iPhone 12 and didn’t want to risk holding my phone while walking him. Having an apple watch makes it so if I get a notification while I am out walking him I do not need to get my phone out. This was a selling point for me to get the watch. You can also quickly message back with a voice to text feature or draw out each individual letter. There are also pre-made responses to texts that you can just tap, just be careful you don’t hit one that would be an inappropriate response. I have found it useful to have the notifications on my wrist all the time! I find I spend less time on my phone scrolling because I don't need to have my phone out to see if a notification was important. Before I had the watch, every time I would get a notification then I would do a scroll through all my social media. This is good for me since the first few months of the pandemic I was incessantly scrolling and this has helped me cut that down. Also, with the pandemic, I didn't want to have to get my phone out when I go into a store or other outside area possibly transferring germs from my hands to my phone. It feels a lot safer to just flick my wrist and see the time/notifications. Another handy feature on the wrist, it has a “flashlight” which really just makes the screen white. I didn’t think much of it at first but it is surprisingly helpful if you are trying to open a door in the dark or navigate a room in the middle of the night. *Sleep tracking -I had previously been using my iPhone to track my sleep which was much less accurate. Now I sleep with the apple watch on and it tracks my sleep much better. I could get a pretty accurate reading of how much I actually sleep each night. This is great as well because I have set the alarm to wake me up with a haptic buzz on my wrist. It is a much gentler way to wake up. I can also quickly hit a “snooze” right from my wrist if I am still sleepy. *Complications -You can change the watch face so that it has all of your needed apps on the face (or complications). I have a face that allows me to see the time, weather, stopwatch, activity rings, and an app I use called "hindsight" to track stuff like the last time I walked the dog. *Data! -I love all the data it collects in general. There are activity rings to incentivize you to stand, move, and exercise. There is an app to remind you to breathe. It keeps track of your heart rate which is great to know. There is just a bunch of data for you to look at and think about in the "health" app. I find myself wanting to stand or move a bit more because I am reminded I haven't done it much. This is really helpful during the pandemic for those of us working from home and we are moving much less than we did last year. The bad: *Storage -It says it has 8 GB of storage. I got it and quickly realized it only has 4.3 GB listed as the capacity and once my apps have been downloaded and the new update. It has about 2 GB of storage left. This is not a lot. I did some online searching and found out this is a common complaint from owners with the series 3. So, if you were planning on downloading a bunch of stuff to the watch itself then this would not be a good option. You would want to upgrade to the SE or higher as they start around 32 GB of storage. *Updates: -The series 3 has the newest update (as of writing this) to OS7 for the apple watch, but this is rumored to be the last update for the series 3. Which makes sense given the storage capacity. So, keep in mind if you get the series 3, it will probably stop being updated after this most recent update which means you may miss out on cool features. *Exercise ring and walking -It doesn't record my "walking" as exercise often. My friend and I went on a walk for over an hour. This was a "brisk" walk as apple indicates it needs to be to get exercise credit. This walk was high endurance with our heart rates up. My friend is a tall, fit man. I am a little taller than average, curvier woman. The apple watch granted me 8 minutes of exercise after walking over an hour. The apple watch gave my friend 45 minutes towards his exercise goal. I was quite upset. I noticed this was a trend. I did more web searching and found this is a problem with the apple watch, which (surprise surprise) seems to affect women. This was pretty upsetting for me. Apple doesn't have a "fix" for this issue. It recommends a bunch of stuff like pairing and unpairing, recalibrating, etc which I tried and it did not fix the issue. Then it just comes down to them saying that everyone has a different target rate for a "brisk walk" but why would my friend who a fit tall man whose heart rate is lower than mine still be getting all these minutes awarded but not myself? Seems suspicious. I may exchange the watch for another one, but I don't think that will fix this "glitch" but it might be worth a try. *screen doesn't seem that durable -It has already started to gain some light surface scratching on the screen. They can mostly be rubbed out but it is still frustrating. I'm really careful with my things, but it is a watch so you may occasionally have it brush against things just by being on your wrist. I'm really enjoying it overall! I think it is worth the price I paid. I need to charge it every about 1 1/2 days. So the battery life doesn't seem too bad. I watched some videos about how to maximize the features such as turning on a greater haptic buzz etc which could also lessen battery life. I also notice if my friends are messaging a lot in a group message then the battery goes down more (obviously) so at that point, I usually just mute their messages on the watch. I am mostly just wondering if I should exchange it to see if I got a "defective" watch or if I should upgrade to a 6? The features are not that much greater in the 6 for my needs so I probably won't but given the storage and future updates, I am considering. If you're thinking about getting an apple watch, I say go for it! It has been great the past week. Update as of 12/16/2020: *Apple introduced Apple Fitness+. My watch tried to update this morning. I got a notification that this update failed as it takes 2.5 GB. There is no way to do this update to get this feature as there just isn't enough memory on the watch. I am leaning more towards returning now as it is now obsolete aside from the standard features. Update 12/18/2020: *They fixed the update problem and now the series 3 is able to do the most recent update. It did last night. I also got a free trial to Apple + Fitness since I bought the watch around the holidays. I will activate that trial next week and see how the watch works with it! I am still concerned about the lack of memory on the watch so I am thinking about returning still but I will ride it out a little longer. Update 01/03/2021: I ended up returning the series 3 and getting the SE instead. The more I read the more I realized how bad this issue with memory was going to be for the future of using the watch. In order to do future updates due to lack of memory I would have had to completely unpair the watch. I am really happy with the SE. I’ve had it a little over a week. It’s not so bulky and sits closer to the arm. It will also last me a few years instead of becoming obsolete within a month of purchase. Lastly the Apple fitness + feature is good for getting some movement. I’ve been using it almost every day to do the HIIT and dance workouts. It probably doesn’t compare to a gym experience but it is welcomed to get more movement during the pandemic. ... show more

  • Updated, Heart good. Mapping apps not ready for backcountry use.
I bought this Apple Watch 3 to do two things: measure my heart rate during workouts and help with maps on my wrist while hiking and dual sport motorcycle riding. It does the heart rate measurements OK but took work to get the settings right so that it wouldn't switch out to other apps while I needed to see the heart rate. Heart rate measurements are noisy and intermittent. The mapping apps are at best only poor for backcountry use. I need to import gpx tracks and see those on the watch. Not working yet. Frequently, I can't reach down and fiddle with buttons and knobs. I need to set it up once with a map display that has what I need in it and leave it there for sometime. Like a half hour. I've tried several apps including Gaia, topo, topo plus, viewranger, etc. They all are simply not ready for prime time yet on the watch. The weather app works intuitively well, so have updated the review from 2 to 3 stars. Very tempting to return the watch back to Amazon where I received it from a week ago. But I hate returning stuff. I will hang in trying to get this watch to do what I need and update this review if successful. Update January 12, 2020. I've owned this watch about a month now and I'm starting to get to know it better. It still hasn't supported very useful mapping in that I haven't found an app yet that will allow gpx tracks to be displayed on the watch. This was really one of the two main reasons for buying the watch so four stars might be generous. However the heart rate measurements are actually very good. Graphs are shown and, while occasionally there are wildly incorrect heart rates shown, those are relatively few. The heart monitoring app supplied by Apple does a good job of keeping track of workout heart rates vs resting rates, etc. It is quite good and I know a lot more about mine then I used to know. I'm 61 years old and have a resting rate of 49 and a peak workout rate of 160. I've actually discussed the 160 with my Dr to understand if I was in any danger. No problem but don't go any higher was the answer. So this was made possible by this watch. Also, there are other apps like weather and messaging that are very nice. Hence the four stars. ... show more

  • Stick with the Apple Watch Series 3 for Now
I had a Series 1 Apple Watch for 4 1/2 years. It finally died. I think moisture did it in. I was researching the newer models, mainly the Series 3 vs. Series 5. I opted for the Series 3, mainly because it was $199.99 for the 42mm version ($169.99 for the 38mm version), versus $414.99 for the Series 5 44mm version ($384.99 for the 40mm version). The Series 3 has a better battery life. It is water resistant to 50m; same as the Series 5. That was especially important to me, and a big improvement over the Series 1. Sure, the Series 5 has extra bells and whistles like EKG monitoring capabilities. But unless you are a cardiac patient, you don't need that. The other bell/whistle with the Series 5 is a fall alert to a third party. Again, I don't need that right now. The Series 5 also has the 44mm screen size if desired, which is a plus. Probably the biggest advantage of the Series 5 over all previous models is the always on display. Honestly, for an extra $200 for a Series 5, it isn't worth it to me. I have gotten used to tasing my wrist to see the display, and that function actually preserves battery life. In addition, the Series 6 is likely coming out in the fall, so if you're gonna shell out the "big bucks", I would wait 2 or so months. I would also expect the Series 5 to be discounted once the Series 6 comes out as well. Whatever you Series you decide on, I STRONGLY recommend you get a reliable screen protector. I bought a great one on Amazon for $10.99. I am very happy with my new Apple Watch Series 3! ... show more
