  • It works for FireWire external drives
I could not find a third party Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter - yeah apple works and apple is expensive . There are 3 types of Thunderbolt ports . #1 is for video only for external monitor . #2 ( this model) is for external monitor AND things like external drives like firewire ( in my case ) firewire is old tech but it works and there must still be enough out there for them to make the adapter . #3 Thunderbolt I think does it all . NOTE I saw a guy on youtube that needed to get data onto or off of a newer MacBook Pro and the only way he could do it was use a #3 into the laptop .. THEN a #2 into the #3 and then out to fire wire . Any way hope this may help people . The adapter works . THanks ... show more

  • One link in the adapter chain for a Sony Camcorder with FireWire 400 port
I was able to use this adapter as 1 of 3 adapters needed to convert from Firewire 400 to USB-C. This allowed me to connect an old Sony camcorder with a Firewire 400 port to my 2019 iMac. I couldn't find any solution that involved fewer than 3 adapters, but surprisingly it does seem to work. I can stream the camcorder video into iMovie. The 3 adapters you need are: elago FireWire 400 to 800 Adapter Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter There are other FireWire adapters choices besides the elago, but it is what I used. I ordered it 11 years ago though, but Amazon still seems to sell the same version. ... show more

  • For 2018 and newer iMacs, ADDITIONAL ADAPTER REQUIRED to connect to FireWire devices
I just bought a new 2019 iMac. I want to transfer all my data off an old Mac Mini and an old Mac Pro that both use firewire. so, I came to amazon and searched for "thunderbolt to firewire adaptor" and the item on this page is what came up. So I bought it, got it, and realized it didn't fit on my new 2019 iMac! So, I did a little more poking around and learned that the item on this page is a Thunderbolt 2 adapter and it doesn't fit on the new iMac (nevermind it has the same little graphic symbol on the adapter that matches the symbol next to the port on my new iMac)! It turns out that the new Macs use Thunderbolt 3. It's so confusing. Lightning, Thunderbolt, USB-C etc etc. Who can keep all this straight. Anyway, Since the item on this page is a Thunderbolt 2 cable, I was wondering if there's a Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. And it turns out there is. Right here. For $49 painful dollars more... (Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter) https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MQ26QIY/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 So here is the ordering of components and cables that I am now using to connect a Firewire Mac in "target disk" mode to my new imac. 2019 iMac with "Thunderbolt 3" port | Apple Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter | Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter | Firewire 800 cable | 2008 Mac Pro (with firewire 800 port) And as I speak, the files are being transferred through this frankenstein monster of adapters and cables. I will use a file diffing tool to make sure everything copied successfully once the transfer is completed, but I see no reason why this shouldn't work. But damn. $80 for adapters and cables. But what can you do. Just... ouch. Anyway this scheme does work, albeit at a cost. ... show more

  • Works great for Mac Compliant Sound cards!
I bought this and the other TB2 to TB3, for my audio interface. Which is an Apogee Rosetta with Firewire card option. This audio setup was nearly 2k at time of purchase and holds up today still! Given you donโ€™t need drivers for this sound card, this worked great on a Mac Mini 2018. It will work on any Mac if the audio card was Apple class compliant. Meaning no drivers needed to use it. My audio card does have direct monitoring software. But I have to run on Mojave to use it, as itโ€™s a 32bit app. I was hesitant if it would work. But it does, and no hiccups or issues here! Highly recommend, if youโ€™re still trying to get some more years out of an expensive Audio or Video device. ... show more

  • Does what it says.
I was concerned since it's old first gen Thunderbolt but with a TB3 to TB1 adapter I was able to read all the data off my old Firewire external drive and make a backup on modern media.

  • Connect to legacy devices
I got the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 Adapter plus an Apple Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter to connect to old Firewire gear, eg scanner, video camera and audio interface. But I found it works great with an old Firewire iOmega Zip drive. I have been able to pull 20-year old data off some old 100-750MB disks. What a bonus! (You will also need a Firewire 800 to 400 adapter). I used this combination on a PC running Windows 10. ... show more
