  • Like them, but not what Altra used to be.
Size: 10.5 Color: Black
I’ve been wearing Altra shoes for at least 12 years if not more. Way back when you used to have to order from a catalog and then their website…. But now that Vanity Fair bought them out, they just don’t last as long as they used to. VF bought them out in 2018, they own Vans, North Face, Dickies, SmartWool, Wrangler, and several other shoe companies and other clothing companies. I have owned all the original Altra shoes although I wear a 10 and every other shoe Altras have always been a half size bigger so a 10 1/2 for me. No complaint there. My only complaint is that now the toebox is not as wide as they used to be and I personally think that is for aesthetic reasons. The materials used don’t seem to last long and hold up under trail running and hiking conditions as the older shoes used to. I have had at least 30 pair or more and the original lone Peak shoes would last quite some time. The new Altra shoes are now the same as Hoka One Ones, they just don’t hold up as well as they used to. What do I see that has changed? For starters the cushioning, it does not last as long as expected when paying $130 or more for a pair of running trail running and hiking shoes. The beloved toebox has gotten slightly narrower. The tread does not last as long, especially the more aggressive tread. the lugs tend to break off or just plain wear out. I still love Altras I will continue wearing them however, I wish the days are old, where construction and wearability were top notch! But that’s the price of progress specially, when I conglomerate like VF owns what used to be a cottage industry shoe. ... show more

  • Width is different from Olympus 4. Altra has made their shoes slimmer.
Size: 9 Color: Black
- Refer to image, Olympus 4 is ~12cm in width & Torin 5 is ~10cm in width. - Both shoes are Mens US 9. - Length of both shoes are similar. My feet is 26.5cm for reference. - I have bunions and wear a big toe separator. Olympus 4 fits comfortably but Torin 5 is too narrow. - The sole of Olympus 4 is wider and my feet rest fully on the sole, whereas Torin 5 has a slimmer sole and my small toe is not resting on the sole. Also, my small toe is pressed against my 4th toe. So, toe spread is not as natural as Olympus 4. - Olympus 4 has more cushion than Torin 5. - Olympus 4 wider base makes it more stable in comparison to Torin 5. BUT with that said, - Do not purchase Olympus 4 if you're planning to wear it on tiles, city, road, drainage cover when the floor is wet or moist. I've nearly fallen a few times wearing the Olympus 4 while working in a clinic. The sole of the Olympus 4 is very slippery on wet tiles. Hence, I wanted to try out the Torin 5 that has a different sole. ... show more

  • Great shoe, very wide, tongue hurts
Size: 12 Wide Color: Majolica Blue
Great comfy shoe, wonderful for people with very wide feet like myself, and the cushion is fantastic. The only complaint I have is that the tongue is very thin and rigid at the top so it cuts into my ankle unless I wear taller socks. Hoping it will break in after time but for now I had to cover it with some tape to wear no show socks ... show more

  • Great shoe with some caveats
Size: 11.5 Color: Majolica Blue
Edit to add: I wound up making 2 small scissor cuts on both sides of the tongue and it totally fixed the tongue pain. The tension was relieved and it is no longer digging into my skin. Going to order another pair now that I know the tongue can be easily remedied. —- These are my first pair of Altras. Just had my first run in them and was pretty impressed over all. I have been running in barefoot shoes for the last 12 years but after recent lower back trauma was encouraged to use something with some cushion. Other cushioned shoes were a bit too much in the heel drop or too heavy and really threw off my game, I wanted zero drop and these fit the bill. Zero drop with a thick cushion. The run felt great, the zero drop was comfortable for me coming from barefoot shoes, while the cushioning helped absorb impact and I noticed my back wasn’t sore at all afterwards, which it had been for a while with my barefoot shoes. I found the other reviews about sizing and the tongue to be on point. I originally ordered my usual size but had to return for a half size larger. The half size up is comfortable. The tongue is the only real weak spot of this shoe for me. I still gave it 5 stars because biomechanically I felt great on my run, but the tongue is a real head scratcher. It’s as if no one road-tested these before hitting the market. Even just walking before running I could feel the tongue cutting into the front of my ankle. Really, really poor design. The material is thin and stiff and WILL cut you up. I will probably try to cut the tongue with scissors to relieve the pressure as I prefer wearing no show socks. Workaround isn’t too difficult so I’m still a fan. Hopefully my next pair of Altras will have a better tongue, but in all other regards I love this shoe. Fingers crossed they have reasonable durability. ... show more

  • Great shoe,but!
Size: 10 Wide Color: Majolica Blue
Altra's are the best but, the tongue is awful on this model. I needed to cut half the top of the tongue off so it didn't cut into the top of my foot. First time I had any issues with their shoes!
