If you are reading these reviews, you are likely either a runner or a person with problem feet. To help you, I will identify myself as someone with problem feet (very wide--even birkenstocks are not usually wide enough, painful from fallen arches , arthritis and toes that turn under slightly and have been squished together so that that they don't separate well) looking for a comfortable shoe for walking and gardening. I have decided to try the alternate approach suggested by some podiatrists (wide toe box, low to zero drop, no toe spring, and toe spacers for training) instead of the more traditional approach, as orthotics have not prevented progression of these problems. I ordered three styles of Altras as well as two competitive brands. These are the most comfortable for me of the Altras. They fit well, give enough protection, are very flexible in every direction. The toe box is both large and tall enough for me, what a wonder. There is a sort of diagonal pull in the toe area from the big toe across the base of the others, which though unattractice does not reduce comfort for me. The other shoes have not yet arrived, so I am not sure whether I will ultimately keep these.

These shoes are a Godsend! Finding shoes that I can wear is a huge ordeal since I have fibromyalgia and really bad pain anytime I stand or walk. I need comfortable supportive shoes that give me a pain-free baseline. After buying my previous shoe style (from a different company) for nearly a decade, I didn't know what to do when the style was discontinued. I tried a lot of shoes recommended for those with foot pain and the Altra Escalante 1.5's are perfect! They have a lightweight, almost sock-like top that allows your foot to breath and is great if the tops of your feet are sensitive, or you have up-turned toes like mine. The wide toe-box is great for having plenty of room to spread your toes and though I had my doubts about the zero-drop heel, I feel like I can finally walk like I was born to! The only improvements I would suggest to these shoes are they could be a bit wider through the arch (thought they run true to size) and I wish the 1.5's had not been replaced by the Escalante 2.0's, which have a harder top.

I wore custom insoles for a year trying to cure my feet of their pain... finally went to poduatrist, it turns out I've been wearing shoes that were about a size too small(I couldn't tell) and that none of my shoes were actually even as wide as my feet. It was causing these little hard callous spots on the bottom of my feet that make you scream when you touch them. I thought they were bone spurs but they are actually plantar keratodermas. They are caused by poorly fitting shoes squeezing your feet into strange positions, and they are like little metatarsal pressure points.Altras were on his recommended list of shoes for my wide ol' tootsies. I've never in so many years put on a shoe that required no breaking in. Also, with the toe box having enough room I actually don't need arch support. If you have wide feet, and are sick of ordering shoes that are labeled wide, but are not really wide, you should definitely invest in these.

OMG! I thanked God when I put these on and felt like I was wearing slippers lol. I’ve been through many many brands. Some cheaper some super expensive and nothing felt good. A few years ago I use to wear Merrells zero drop shoes and they were fine. Decided to try Altra brand and these are the best shoes I’ve ever had in my life ! I am wearing them around the house for now. When I go back to work these will be my works shoes. I stand for 9-10 or more hours a day. I’ll really know how they fair once I get back to normal every day life. These fit my feet the way shoes should fit. I have yet to put on shoes and feel nothing. No pain especially my right foot is always an issue.. I am so thankful for these!! Thank you so much Altra and Amazon ! I got a great deal too !!!

This item fits as expected. I feared they would be snug, and they are a bit on my right foot. They are made of great quality materials and are super comfortable! Like sweatpants or yoga pants for your feet! I only recommend them though if you don't have wide feet particularly in the midfoot where the great toe joint begins. I have one foot slightly wider than the other at this area. And I had foot surgery on it when I was younger to correct a bunion. I fear that if I were to wear these it would just be too snug and continue irritating it. When you have bunions It's tricky to know whether something is going to stretch out quickly enough and not bothervthe bunion. And needing to get a larger sized shoe particularly with more width is the whole purpose I began looking for a new pair of shoes. So I don't know that these would work for me, unfortunately!

I love these shoes! My toes have room to move, the material is stretchy and breathable, and the laces are extra long so you can actually tie them without having to lace too tightly. The soles grip the surface you're walking on and you can actually feel it. I'm moderately disabled due to a badly injured ankle so the last thing I need is to slip and fall. Uneven ground is not my friend. These shoes make me feel confident that I will not slip on any surface, even if it's wet. These would make great climbing shoes! I will be ordering more, they are worth the price, and I would recommend. They were recommended to me by a friend who works in a busy medical office.

I wear an 11. Ordered 3 pairs, and all were too small. Returned and ordered 12s (because half sizes never exist for us ski people). The 12 just barely fit right. If I were to order shoes from this brand again I'd recommend buying a few at a time because it's likely the first one won't fit. Ironic that people with long feet need some of the best shoes, yet those shoes never quite exist.
