This book pays homage to the music video format as well as the music of the first half of the 90‘s. Throughout its pages, the readers can recall songs and albums that they may have forgotten about, or even better, get excited about those that they have never heard of so far. MTV brought to the television screen a mix of genres from rock, hip-hop and punk to electronics, metal, and their various combinations, via music videos in daily rotation, but especially in specialized night-time programs like Alternative Nation, Headbangers Ball and 120 Minutes. Thanks to MTV, many today refer to the 90’s as a decade in which no musical combination was considered impossible. "Alternator" attempts to zoom in on what was significant in the field of alternative music and music video between 1990 and 1994. It introduces the reader to more than 100 albums, which could be described as essential, important, or at least worth listening to within individual genres. The following is a selection of music videos from albums released in that year, illustrating the genre diversity of the 90’s better than any wording. The reader is invited to watch the individual music videos by short comments from eight authors of three nationalities (Slovak, English, and Czech). Out of a total number of 333 videos that fit in the selection, 111 can also be viewed directly from the book's pages via a QR code. The book also includes annual playlists, which can be viewed on YouTube or heard on Spotify. "Alternator" is not a definitive "best of" collection of what was born in the field of music video in the first half of the 90’s.
