Description

For eight years, far beyond the battlefields of Vietnam and the glare of media distortions, American Green Berets fought a deadly secret war in Laos and Cambodia under the aegis of the top secret Military Assistance Command Vietnam – Studies and Observations Group, or SOG.Go deep into the jungle with five SOG warriors surrounded by 10,000 enemy troops as they stack up the dead to build a human buttress for protection. Witness a Green Beret, shot in the back four times and left for dead, who survives to fight savagely against incredible odds to complete his missions. Shudder as an enemy soldier touches a Green Beret’s boot in the dark of night. Cringe as a Sergeant on SOG Spike Team Louisiana calls in an air strike on his team to break an enemy’s wave attack. A team member dies instantly, and a Green Beret has an out-of-body experience as he watches his leg get blown off. “As the commander of SOG, I can say that “Across the Fence” accurately reflects why the secret war was hazardous for our troops and so deadly for the enemy. – Major General John K. Singlaub (U. S. Army Ret.)Black Ops told with the terrifying clarity that only one who was there can tell it.– W.E.B. Griffin & William E. Butterworth IV Read more

  • An Amazing Recount of the Secret War
John Stryker Meyer has given us the gripping true story of his and others' experiences taking secret missions "across the fence" into the denied areas of Laos, Cambodia and North Vietnam, by the men of SOG during the Vietnam war. These true stories are mind-blowing. It's simply amazing that these brave men, in teams of 7-9 soldiers, repeatedly volunteered for these missions, almost always compromised and almost always facing NVA forces of companies, battalions, regiments and even an entire division in one case. MACV-SOG men had casualty rates of 150 percent, i.e. every man was wounded at least once and 50 percent were lost. Many are still MIA, and Meyer and others work diligently to resolve their cases and finally bring those men home. Meyer has written two more must-read books on SOG: On the Ground and SOG Chronicles. Jocko Willink, a former US Navy SEAL, sponsors SOGCASTS, where Meyer interviews former SOG members. Willink has been astonished at the raids SOG conducted, admitting that most of those missions would never be authorized today because of their overt danger. It must be said also that SOG was a most deadly enemy--the most dangerous missions for the NVA were in tracking and fighting SOG. ... show more

  • Outstanding!
Outstanding! Not much else you can use to describe this book, its author, or the topic. If you have an interest in the Vietnam War, special forces operations, or MACVSOG specifically, you need to read this book. I’d also suggest listening to SOGCAST. It was a great companion to the reading.

  • Unparalleled heroism on a daily basis
Crossing the fence into Laos, and to a lesser extent, Cambodia was no easy feat-but very young men did it on a regular basis, risking their lives, against overwhelming odds, to bring back intel on the NVAs operations along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. The author was one of those young men, in their early 20s, leading their RTs on such missions. From leading their teams of Americans and “indigs” into LZs, staying in contact with Covey to keep the teams alive, to calling in air strikes by the USAF, and finally extraction by the Kingbees of the VNAF, these men had tremendous responsibility on their shoulders. Yet they bore it and made the enemy pay a horrific price during their many contacts. The men of MACVSOG were what we would now call a force multiplier, tying down 10s of thousands of NVA troops constantly on the search for Recon Teams inserted to find them. Over the past 20+ years, many of these incredible, hard to believe, missions have finally come to light as many SOG veterans have no longer felt compelled to keep “their” war a secret. This is one of those books! I look forward to the authors other books in a similiar vein, as well as his SOGcast. ... show more

  • Vietnam via MACV-SOG
I have read quite a few books about the Vietnam War, and this one offers an entirely different view. I don't particularly believe it is any more violent or bloody, but it tells the story of operations on a different level. Mr. Meyer is able to recall and relate stories of operations in ways many other warriors cannot. He is detailed, clear, and offers true insight into the strategic decision making of his higher authority, as well and the small unit tactics his team used to stay alive. A superb read, strongly recommended. Thank you for your service, Sir. ... show more
