  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent solution for a computer station/home office workspace
Size: 55 INCH Color: Rustic Brown
I bought this item to replace a 30+ year old computer desk. I am re-furbishing and re-tasking the old one to be a craft work station. Not particularly relevant. However, this new one is was the same desk size as my old one. The surface area (24 X 55 inches) for monitors and such was key reason for my purchasing this piece of furniture over similar offerings. While the new one doesn't have the same amount of shelve space as my old one, this updated looking furniture will serve my needs. I read other reviews where a few people found the device not particularly solid. Some indicated the desk was loose after assembly. I find that not the case and suggest the assembly instructions do cover the situation. I recommend you take your time to assemble this desk properly. For the record, the box includes all the tools you need for assembly. If you have a light duty drill, use of the 'star bit' they include makes the assembling task easier, especially if you have to back the bolts out to increase the 'wiggle room' as you assemble and adjust the pieces for this desk. I didn't use their flat head screwdriver during assembly. The one place it's needed I managed to turn the piece by hand to orient it properly. You use the Phillips head driver only for the keyboard tray. (Use a ruler to make sure the tray brackets are on the same plane (parallel)). Both of these were 'stubby' screwdrivers. However, you don't need a lot of tightening power for the top shelf piece and keyboard tray. The open end wrench saved me the age old problem of finding the proper sized wrench in my tool drawer. That wrench comes into play for the top vertical support pieces and the cross brace. (I am torn between saving the cost of the tools and reducing the price a bit and just using the typical list of 'tools needed'. Having everything in the box gives this item an edge up on similar furniture I have assembled.) KEY POINT: Follow the instructions. (I know, gentlemen...something we do not typically read these before starting the project). Take your time to note the orientation of the pieces. The instructions have red circles around critical holes that must face in specific directions and be in correct positions. The instructions point out how you place the frames to locate the CPU shelf on either the left or the right side of the desk. (OK, full disclosure, a magnifying glass helps see those details...I didn't need one. But I did have to have a bit more than normal light on the subject.) Most importantly, follow the instructions and DO NOT tighten the hardware until told to do. "Spoiler Alert:" You tighten the hardware installed in step 2 in step 7. Hardware installed in step 8 gets tightened in step 11. Apologies if that ruined the surprise factor. ;-) The first several steps do have a cumbersome upside down method and requires you to hold the shelves 'under the frame' while installing the hardware. However, after going through the process, the instructions make sense. The instructions clearly state you should not tighten the bolts. The instructions indicate you should insert 2/3 of the the length of the bolts. To keep things from flopping around too much, I was more like 7/8 or even 9/10 of the way. The point is that you will do most of the assembly of the desk portion and then tighten the screws. So, keep things loose for a while. (I did have to back out a couple of the screws a couple of turns as I was adjusting things.) When you do tighten the screws (in steps 7 and 11), my suggestion is to make sure pieces are squared up as you tighten the hardware. I cheated a bit and used a machinist square. Just make sure the metal supports are perpendicular to the shelves and the shelf edges are even and flush with the supporting metal frames. That looks to me to be squared up nicely. Aligning things up helps eliminate potential motion out of the structure. As I said above, use of a hand drill proves useful except for the bottom shelf screws, The head of the screws point down with about 2.5 inches of space to the floor. Here the supplied Allen wrench is best solution. After all the assembly steps were completed, I went back and insured that each screw was tight. (I bumped the torque setting on my drill up a couple of notches.) Be careful and do not overtighten the hardware. I have assembled many pieces of furniture and find that in some cases you can over torque. I use the 'hand tighten' then see if you can give another 1/8 turn method. I can imagine you could over torque the inserts (the actual nuts for the bolts) and end up with loose mechanical connections. Do not use my assembly time as a real estimate. I take my time on projects like this (about 4 hours start to finish). But, don't rush the process. Rushing the assembly steps risks over torqueing the bolts, overlooking a point on the instructions and ending up with a less than perfect piece of furniture. I hope you found the review and my experience with assembling this 55" computer desk useful. I am pleased with the assembly process. I am quite happy with the results. ... show more

  • 5.0 out of 5 stars Pay VERY close attention during assembly.
Size: 55 INCH Color: Black
Overall, extremely good desk, especially for the price. It’s sturdy, solid, and SORT OF easy to put together. I went in skeptical of the reviews that complained about the assembly (I was an airplane mechanic, I can read complex electrical and mechanical schematics with ease. Ikea furniture, despite the memes, have never stumped me.) For context, I did assemble this completely alone and it took about an hour of active assembly. 2 hours total because I had to take breaks due to my disabilities (back issues) The instructions for this desk are rather small, and only pictographic with minimal guidance notes. To save you time, here’s where I got screwed up: When assembling the leg supports, set them in the orientation you plan to have them before attaching (I.e: if you want the double shelf on the left and the single shelf for tower on the right) my best advice, and it does not say this in the instructions, is you want to confirm that the extra holes for the cross supports are to the rear and inside for EACH side, however you assemble them based on your preference . I ended up with my shelf preference reversed because I didn’t think too deeply about it because I went in with a bit of huberus. Don’t be like me. Additionally, for attaching the legs to the table top: the instructions show you where to put the screws. What is difficult to see due to the fine print, is the red dotted line circle showing that you’re only attaching THREE screws for each assembly. The 4th hole, while it lines up with the support, is missing an anchor on both sides. I saw exactly 2 extra anchors in the spare parts bag and thought “Gee, they really thought of everything!” Popped in the anchors and the 4th screw. Fast forward to attaching the top shelf (hutch) part. Those holes that were missing the anchor? Yeaaaah those were meant for an extra long bolt + nut combo to secure the two side rails for the hutch. Queue me haphazardly crawling under my desk to unscrew the cross guards, unscrew the “legs” and using my back to lift the table top enough to use a screwdriver to pop out the anchors so I could attach the hutch. Before I continue, shoutout to my Harry Potter books for propping up those metal frame bars that hold the hutch shelves so that I could assemble them without assistance. I should have just grabbed some c-clamps from the garage to hold the other end up, but it was raining and I APPARENTLY like to do things the hard way. Final note: they ask you to attach the support rails individually, and THEN the wooden shelf bit. Doing this was a nightmare, because the metal bars for the shelves were a bit warped, and I found it nearly impossible to get the holes to line up on the bar with the ones on the shelf, and trying to (strenuously) manipulate the bar when the shelf wasn’t attached kept causing the shelf to slide out of place anyways. Again, I still managed, on my own, BUT I highly recommend doing it the opposite. Lay the shelf down, attach the guard rails, and then secure them to the desk (if you have a way to prop the other end up so it’s level.) additionally, I feel this desk was engineered for the shelves to be done this way, as when you do it the way the instructions tell you, the law of “righty tighty lefty loosey” is reversed when screwing the shelf on upside down, a fact I learned a little too late because when I FINALLY managed to line up one hole, the screw wouldn’t go in and when I switched directions, the screw slipped and fell and I lost the perfect line-up that I was holding with a very tired hand 😂 ALL that said, please take the above as suggestions and not a bad review. I have ADHD and am prone to losing focus, which makes strictly small-print pictographic instructions with almost no guidance notes very difficult for me to follow. For the third time, I assembled this completely by myself, with almost no floor space to do it on, and still managed in an hour. If you’ve got a second person to help you, this will be a breeze! Super nice desk, super sturdy, lots of room (I’m a casual gamer, and my monitors are 24” and 27” respectively!) also the keyboard tray fits my full size keyboard and gaming mouse without issue or crowding. Definitely recommend this desk, however I hope the company will make clearer notes on the instructions, beyond just those little dotted red circles that I thought designated orientation and NOT “don’t put a screw in here” ... show more

  • 4.0 out of 5 stars Difficult for one person to assemble
Size: 55 INCH Color: Black
It took me about 3 hours to assemble. It was not simple. Here are some suggestions: 1) READ THE DIRECTIONS BEFORE STARTING and consult them frequently; 2) Pay particular attention to the little red circles in the figures and to the orientation of the sections in the diagrams. It’s easy to get confused; 3) Have someone help you if only to hold the sections while you insert connectors. 4) I was able to attach the keyboard holder only after I decided to use the styrofoam packing pieces to hold it up- then it was easy; 5) Follow the direction not to fully tighten the screws until the end of each section. I had to loosen several screws to make the holes line up; 6) Do not over-tighten the screws. I cracked one board slightly and broke one of the teflon inserts. Fortunately they provide extra hardware; 7) Be careful when you first turn the desk over. It is not really stable until the cross-bars are connected. Now that it is finally assembled, it looks great and seems pretty stable so far. So, I found it difficult to assemble (I assemble lots of furniture so I have a basis for comparison), but I think the lessons learned would make it a lot simpler a second time. ... show more
