I am really liking this product as it traps all of the tiny pieces of food that can slip through the standard sink drain. Because of the small slits in this drain piece it takes a few moments to clean and get all the teeny tiny pieces of gunk out. My husband’s comment is while he likes it, he doesn’t think the plastic piece insert that collects the food will survive. He thinks the plastic is of low quality. I disagree because you have to be careful cleaning it out and not force or dig hard in the slits to clean. I bought one for my husband’s family’s cabin and what works great about this product is the separation of the part that catches food and the part that plugs up the drain to wash dishes. Various family members used to remove the entire metal drain piece and all kinds of food would go down the pipes and there is no garbage disposal. Aaarrgghhh!! This makes the biggest difference in keeping the pipes free of debris.

We recently moved to a house with a septic system and having been spoiled with a garbage disposal for decades had to deal with avoiding getting food scraps into the drain. We'd tried a few cheap strainer options but they failed. Both my spouse and I saw this independently and ordered it; based on some reviews indicating failure we decided to keep the second one as a spare because honestly it's a good value even if it doesn't last. We're a few weeks in and the first one's doing fine. The "food catching" part works fine, as long as we're careful not to put too much food scraps in the sink to begin with. There are a few issues to work around that are manageable, but bring this down a few stars from perfect. 1. It wasn't obvious when we first got it that the lower level silicone ring was necessary to push down to really seal it in the sink. It wasn't holding a good seal around the rim until we figured that out while cleaning it. 2. The bigger silicone ring around the top slips off easily when trying to clean it and takes a bit of holding your mouth right to put it back the right way. 3. It doesn't sit flush, creating a small ridge that means a small puddle of water remains around the ring after draining... fine for clean water but any soap suds or anything else that would leave a stain after evaporating makes the sink look ugly. Trying to rinse those last few grains of rice or other scraps into it feels like putt-putt golf when the hole is on top of a little hill and the ball keeps turning away. 4. If you get too much food in your sink, you reach the point where the water stops draining (just like it would with a clogged drain). That's obviously a problem with any strainer, but this seems to fill up with even a much smaller amount. We really have to be conscientious about scraping as much as we can into the compost before getting dishes in the sink. 5. The press down to seal the sink drain as shown in many video reviews works fine to seal, and pops right back up in cold water, but if you're running hot water, the inner plastic piece expands enough where it doesn't pop back up easily. Not a huge problem for us as we rarely use this, but if you're hoping to leave the strainer in and keep the pop-down-pop-up drain stopper, be prepared for a less-than-perfect execution. Overall happy with the purchase and think it's a good value, but depending on your requirements you might want to consider these design flaws.
