Finally, a powerful and (relatively) affordable MacOS setup that separates the display from the computer. Something I have been waiting a while for. The Mac Studio M1 Max is everything that I need in terms of power. Sure, the M1 Ultra probably makes rendering videos and playback a little more seamless, but for me, the M1 Max is perfect. It is a massive step up from my Mac Mini and I didn't have to drop Mac Pro money to get it. It bridges the gap between those two perfectly. The Mac Studio and Apple Studio display work together seamlessly. Obviously, they were designed to work well together, and the design is perfect. Something to be said for Apple's ability to perfect their ecosystem. If you're going from something less powerful than the M1 Pro (I have the 14"), you're going to notice a significant difference in snappiness and overall power. If you're someone like me who also has an M1 Pro device, the difference is not going to be quite as noticeable, but it is there. For everyday use, you're likely not going to notice even the slightest difference. For more intensive creative projects, you will start to notice a difference in performance and consistency with the M1 Max chip. One thing that does truly bother me to no end is the inability to do your own upgrades. Sure, I have seen the videos that show very in-depth workarounds to adding more internal storage, but it should not take this much effort for me to upgrade MY OWN device. A while back, Apple announced a move towards a more right-to-repair mindset, even offering specific tools for customers to repair/upgrade their devices. But this appears to have been mostly talk. When opening up the Mac Studio, there are two clear slots for storage, of which my device is using one. If you have an Ultra with max storage, I'd imagine both slots are used. However, in my instance, if I try to upgrade the storage, the Mac Studio actually will NOT allow the device to boot up. It's not even that Apple has manufactured a device that can't be user upgraded, they have actually gone out of their way to block a VERY clear avenue for upgraded. To me, this is not acceptable. EDIT: So, in doing some research it seems that M1 devices use raw storage instead of SSD. This means that the storage does not have its own controllers, that part is handled by the Max or Ultra logic board. So it seems that, for some reason, the Max and Ultra logic boards are unable to comprehend a different memory quantity than what your machine had at shipment. On an anecdotal level, it seems swapping storage devices of two separate Mac Studios that shipped with the same memory capacity can work. Even still, at best this is a significant oversight, and at worst, this is intentionally negligent. Aside from the negative for not being able to upgrade the Mac Studio, the device is overall very nice and very powerful. It is exactly what I was looking for when I upgraded, and I couldn't be happier with the overall performance. If you're looking for a powerful device for creative workloads, this is the computer for you. If you're looking for something to handle less intensive tasks, such as internet surfing, multitasking, excel spreadsheets, etc...then I'd go with the Mac Mini or even an iMac. Unless you just WANT this. 12/22/22 EDIT: To date, this thing is still powerful and smooth. I really could not ask for a better creative desktop for music creation and photo editing. I briefly thought that I might hold out for Apple's eventual successor to the iMac Pro, but I really think this might just be it.

Just staggering performance for such a small form factor. Bought for iOS development and music production, and it's more than capable for those tasks. Setup isn't the most intuitive, but it's not a big deal. You may have to connect your peripherals via cable when setting up, but after that it's fine. Used my apple keyboard for setup and then switch to my Logitech ERGO K860 afterwards. Fast, smooth, and quiet machine. I hesitate to buy because of what I heard about the fan noise. Here are my thoughts on the fan noise. It is NOT a big deal. I checked levels with my condenser mic, and a truck driving by outside registered higher than the fan noise. If you're in a dead silent room, you can hear it. Otherwise, you can really only hear it if you're listening for it. However, reducing the fan noise will get rid of this (fan speed of around 1200 worked for me). Fits perfectly on my small desk. I really can't say enough good things about this device. Well worth the purchase. Also glad I didn't pay for the extra internal storage. I just can't justify spending $200 for an extra 512GB of storage when you can get 2TB of external storage for the same price. If you want good speed and more storage for less money, get a thunderbolt M.2 SSD enclosure and an M.2 NVMe SSD and you're good to go. Also, I have a 2019 MBP and a 2021 M1 MBP from work, so this is perfect for me. If I didn't have those two laptops, I probably would have opted for the MBP for portability. The MBP is plenty powerful enough even without the Max chip. The 2019 MBP is WAY louder, but the 2021 M1 MBP is actually quieter than this Mac Studio. But again, the fan noise is nothing to worry about. People have been recording music with much louder machines for years. So overall, I'm super happy with my purchase and would easily purchase again.

Such a great investment, the best decision you'll make this year. It has all the ports you need and doesn't slow down like a 2021 iMac. I could see this lasting for some years to come. If you produce music with LUNA then this is the right choice. My 2021 iMac started to have a lot of hiccups when producing my music. Glad my new Mac Studio solved all of those issues. It's very snappy, which I like.

Although the Apple Studio Max is not inexpensive, it seemed to be a good value for me. Compared to the Mac mini, the Studio comes with 4 Thunderbolt 4 ports, and 2 USB C ports. If you price a Thunderbolt 4 docking station it is between $200 to $350 and the current Mac mini is limited to 2 Thunderbolt 3 ports. When I checked it appeared Apple was no longer offering the 16GB of memory on the Mini and 8GB seemed limiting. Once you hypothetically calculate the Apple cost of going from 8GB to 32GB (which you can not do) that adds $600 to the mini. Increasing storage from 256 GB to 512 GB adds another $200. The M1 Max chip is a major upgrade if you process AI, photo or video (multicore processing) applications. I'm happy with the Apple Studio so far. Also prior this purchase, I bought a gaming laptop to perform my video and photo edits. It performed well but the sound card failed and the build quality seemed iffy and the service from the provider was awful. I returned the gaming laptop and switched to Mac as their systems are designed with one architecture and the Windows machines, while fairly fast, appeared to be less consistent in terms of design and quality due to all of the providers that make components. Hope these observations are helpful.
