  • Terrible customer support.
My disappointment with the A1X Four is mostly due to what I feel is poor customer support but also because of a defect in the device itself. The defect is that the AG effects (not patches) are all the same. Despite what zoom customer support says, they are not set to simulate the guitar bodies they are named after. In fact, the AG effects are simply gain, bass, mid and treble settings and they are all set exactly the same. The differences in the AG patches come from the other effects in the patches, not the AG effect. Why is that bad? Well, for one thing, all those AG effects take up space that could be used to load up additional effects to the A1X Four. Also, they simply don't simulate the AG guitar they are supposed to simulate at all - at least not with the A1X-Four that I receeived. In fact, as they are, the user might as well simply deletethe AG effects (NOT patches) and free up some space. But Zoom customer support insists that the AG effects simulate various guitar bodies but they most definitely don't. How do I know? First, simply by ear. If you disable all the effects except the AG effects in each AG patch and compare them, there is no difference at all - with my A1-X Four, anyway. I contacted Zoom and asked them about this but they insisted that they are different. So, while showing this to two other guitarists to see if they could detect any difference by ear (they didn't), one of them suggested an objective test to see for sure if there are any differences What we did was input the same pre-recorded guitar track into each of seven different AG patches that had all effects disabled except the AG effects. In other words, we were comparing ONLY the AG effects in each patch. We then output directly to my Zoom H6 recorder (which I really like) and then opened them in a pro DAW program. The graphs were precisely identical and my friend was even able to overlay the graphs and they were exactly the same. Even so, Zoom insists they are different (?). I see three possible explanations for this: 1) Zoom is not comparing them properly - possibly comparing the AG patches, not the AG effects alone. 2) My unit is defective 3) Zoom is simply not admitting that there's a problem. As of today, I see that the A1X-Four is listed as "Not Currently Available" even though is just came on the market a couple months ago. (I very well may have been the first person to buy one and it was shipped the very first day that they were released by Zoom for sale.) Could it be that Zoom realizes that there is a problem and has temporarily stopped selling them while it deals with the issue and just won't admit that there's a problem? I don't know but I doubt that demand has caused a shortage because, as of today, there are only seven reviews of the A1X-Four on Amazon. If they didn't deny that there is a problem, I wouldn't be so disappointed in them and if they had a software update to fix the problem, I would rate the A1X-Four five stars. Also, the AG patches, although producing different sounds - at least most of them do - they DO NOT simulate the guitar bodies they are supposed to simulate. I use them through a Fishman Soundbox Artist, known for being virtually the gold standard in acoustic guitar ampliers for producing natural AG sound, with all effects turned off and all settings set in the middle. But, even more revealing is that when the AG patches are used directly through the A1X-Four into high quality earphones to avoid any effects the amp my create, the patches DO NOT simulate the guitar bodies they are supposed to simulate. Not even close! Of course, much depends on the guitar being used. My six string guitar is an Eastman E20D which is very comparable to a Martin D28. The AG patches seem to be almost random. However, that isn't really important to me because the user can create their own patches and simply ignore the included patches. But why does Zoom even claim that the AG patches simulate specific guitar bodies when they don't. So just don't buy this thinking you can simply use the patches provided to make your guitar sound like or even similar to the guitar bodies they're named after. Just create your own patches and ignore the default AG patches and, while you're at it, you might as well simply delete the AG effects to create space to load up more effects. (It's a shame Zoom didn't provide more memory because you quickly run out of space and have to delete patches and effects to add more patches and effects.) Besides, the other effects in your patches can adjust gain, bass, mid and treble anyway. With care, and the proper choice of effects and adjustments, you may even come close to simulating various guitar bodies but don't think for one minute that the included patches will achieve that. If you do, you'll be disappointed if your A1X-Four is like mine. Also, I asked Zoom to clarify some confusing information in the owner's manual and their response was so confusing that, after reading it several times, I started to get a headache. And I'm a retired software engineer who is very used to reading technical information. It was so confusing that it would be funny if it wasn't so useless. Even so, I still like the A1X-Four but my low rating is due to what I feel is very poor customer support. I think the customer support is so poor that it overrides the good things about the unit. Also, I'm angry with Zoom. I don't like getting the run-around and having my intelligence insulted. If the responses I received from Zoom support were more acceptable instead of denying there's a problem when there most definitely is, I would have rated the A1X-Four four stars. If they acknowledged the problem instead of insulting my intelligence by insisting that there isn't a problem and were working on a software update to fix the problem, I would give the A1X-Four five stars. I'm not holding my breath. One more thing: Don't buy the AC adapter. It's way over-priced and it's not necessary. Just plug the unit into a USB port which comes in many outlet strips. It's nice that Zoom included that option. If you don't have a USB port available to plug into, just get a USB adapter. They only cost a couple bucks - a small fraction of the cost of the Zoom AC adapter. If you are using the unit where there is no access to AC or USB power, you can use batteries, another thoughtful thing on the designer's part. UPDATE 2/11/2020 Since posting the above review, Zoom customer service asked me to send audio samples of the AG effects. I took the time to do as they requested and also included details about how the samples were made and I even sent them pictures of the setup. Their response: The same old responses. It was also clear that they didn't even read the details of how I made the tracks because I told them that I actually recorded them separately since I didn't have the equipment to make MP3 file compatible as input like my professional friend did. So there would be slight differences in the tracks. How did Zoom respond: They said there were slight differences in the tracks proving that the AG effects are different. (The slight differences were because they were all played on guitar and recorded separately! I told them that but they clearly didn't bother to read it.) But then I got another response from yet another person, again claiming that the AG effects are different. If they would just listen to the tracks or simply listen to the AG effects alone on one of their units, they would see that they're the same (unless my unit is defective). They insist that the differences are subtle. Well, if so, they are so subtle that you can't detect it with your ear so what's the point? But they are precisely the same - at least on my unit - and their audio graphs lay right over one another perfectly. At this point, I've pretty much given up on Zoom. If I had it to do again, I would buy a different AG effects processor. ... show more

  • Useful but need to tweak
I got this on the recommendation in the SOTW forum for using with sax clip on mics. I ended up using it for acoustic guitar and upright bass as well. Even though I have a larger pedal board, I have played with just this and a powered speaker. You need to tweak the patches for them to be gig useful. I like that they also included the mic XLR to 1/4 adaptor. Made of plastic so not sure how durable and for how long. So far no issues. Use the PC editor because menu diving can be tiresome. ... show more

  • Good sound, easy programming
Out of the box, a great sounding piece. My only real complaints are, a) the unit is very light, so hitting the pedals without launching it across the floor can be an issue; and b) the expression pedal has a very short throw, making the wah function quite dramatic. But all in all, worth the money.

  • Could be better
Too much unusable stuff. Would be better if you could delete the Effects you were never gonna use. I got it for acoustic guitar was disappointed, returned it and got the G1. I like zoom products and this might be just what someone else needs, just not me.

  • Great device but batteries not working
Edit July 8th2021 : I just charged the Ni-Mh batteries for another device and some intuition made me try them with the AX1-four. So under setup (still running on the adapter) changed to Ni-Mh batteriesI, took out the adapter and suddenly it worked. Next step setup back to Alkaline batteries and inserted the original ones that came with the pedal. That also works now, which adds value to the pedal for painfree mobile use. Ok, one more star for Zoom - the 5th one would have been for running out of the box on batteries as described - you cannot expect users to make intuitive experimentations. Original review: I have been a big Zoom fan since 2008. H2, R8 for catching sounds outside have been loyal and reliable compagnions. R24 is the core of my homestudio and doing a great job aswell. So I followed the recommendations for AX1 four to preamplify, equalize and add some effects for my Aludu (Aluminium Udu drum with build in condenser mic). What can I say. The device does all that to my full satisfaction. It is well build, operations are understandable with simple logic. The effects are not top of the world but solid stuff and can be tweaked enough to get your own results. Big disappointment is that my model refuses to run on batteries. I have been searching a bit on the internet and it seems that this problem is not a rare one. Zoom please rise again to your old standard and become one of my favourite companies again! ... show more

  • Cannot save your loop. Erases when you power down.
This is my first guitar pedal and is probably worth the money, but has one shortcoming. My only complaint is the looper. 30 second max is very limiting and not being able to save your loop is very disappointing. I will be buying a better looper with more features

  • Really impressive at twice the price
This pedal sounds great and is really easy to use. The effects sound top quality - delays and verbs are beautiful and I like that a couple of distortions/dirt FX are included even though it's an acoustic pedal. Helps for making leads pop out a bit when looping with a separate looper pedal. The acoustic models are subtle and may not represent a sound improvement for your guitar (this is true of other acoustic modeling pedals as well due to the number of factors involved, like model, pickup, amp or PA, etc.), so if this is your primary interest I would urge you to test and compare with other modeling pedals. Being able to place this pedal's integrated looper at the beginning of the chain to audition effects is so practical and useful btw, and the included tuner is highly visible and accurate. Included software is intuitive and adds a ton of value. The casing is plastic and I wish it was metal but it's very heavy duty and looks like it will last. Just wish it had a tad more weight to it. Other than that, I can't think of any negatives. Highly recommended if you're primarily interested in great quality effects for your acoustic rig. A no brainer at this price. ... show more
