Description

Previously published as The Happier Attorney: A Comprehensive Guide to Charging Flat Fees for Legal Services by Brita Long, Attorney at Law, PLLC. Quarterly taxes were due in two weeks, and payday was in three days. She was there again. No matter how many hours she worked, what a great job she did, how many practice management CLE’s she went to, she was always one or two clients a month away from making the money she should be making. She didn’t become a lawyer to make millions each year, but she shouldn’t be struggling. What the hell was she doing wrong? She was tired. Tired of spending time billing, reviewing statements, and cutting her time only to have her clients not pay her. There had to be a better way – right? If this sounds familiar, The Happier Attorney is the book for you. You will learn the step by step process that has helped other attorneys, just like you, to successfully move from hourly fees to flat fees and to create a far happier, simpler and more successful practice. • Great book for law students interested in a sustainable lifestyle
I'm a law student who is interested in charging flat fees as an attorney in the future. After hearing Brita Long speak on the Maximum Lawyer podcast, I sought out Brita's Facebook group and purchased her book, the Happier Attorney. Brita's book will teach you how and why flat fees are the most sustainable and efficient way to deliver legal services. Law students who are interested in having long, sustainable legal careers without being beholden to the billable hour will find great value in Brita's book. I know I did. Thanks Brita! ... show more

  • Works for both
Hourly time cost has been in use for about 50 years. It seems quite clear that that is an acceptable form of billing for odd job labourers, but an unfair and inefficient one. Brita Long is advocating the flat fee system. Her book, The Happier Attorney' is well written, clear, concise, and persuasive. Large law firms driven by a band of administrators armed with their management degrees are probably ignoring what Brita Long is advocating because it is not in their interests to change. Long explains clearly that lawyers in big firms as well as small ones suffer under the hourly rates system, not only because it drives them to be inefficient, it also does not give value to the clients. The only ones benefitting are the senior equity partners of large law firms. She shows how one can give value to the client, assuage the client's anxieties about indeterminate bills, earn a decent income, and not have to work 12-15 hours a day. It is a small (131 pages) book and worth reading and practising the flat fee way. The book is self published by Brita Long, but the quality of the paper is excellent - it takes notes written in fountain pen ink without feathering or smudging. The font is slightly large (probably size 14) on what looks like a cross between Calibri and Times Roman. Nice. ... show more

  • Great resource for attorneys trying to implement flat fees.
I have done my fair share of research into flat fees as a better alternative to the billable hour. However, I never read any information on how to actually implement flat fees into a retainer agreement or even if it is compliant with the Rules of Professional Conduct. With Brita Long's "The Happier Attorney" I now have the answers to both of these questions. I really enjoyed her detailed breakdown of how each aspect of the ethical rules actually supports flat fees, and how to best discuss the arrangement with clients and even the Court. I highly recommend this book. ... show more

  • Excellent mindset changer
This book was excellent. It assuaged my fears of the flat fee schedule for attorneys. First, Brita really underscores the value of the law profession. So often lawyers are made out to be either money hustlers or frazzled do good-ers. The book reminds you that yes, you can be well-compensated for providing excellent service. She gives examples how different areas of law can utilize flat-fee schedules. I am wholeheartedly sold and have a new lease on my practice and the value our profession should offer. ... show more

  • Concise and Useful
I purchased this to help me make my practice more efficient, whether or not I intended to fully implement flat fee billing. The book is an excellent read-- concise, practical, useful and straightforward. As an attorney we know that we should do often but don't take the steps to do it. This book has a very straightforward frank tone from one attorney to another on how to improve your practice. The mechanics for how to implement flat fee billing are provided in a concise straightforward, and practical way, that provides a useful outline without lots of unnecessary reading. It was a short read but has re-inspired me with regard to the practice of law. In addition there are many other useful tips relating to efficiency that are not strictly related to flat fee billing. I am starting out my week reinspired this week and it is already going better after I just finished this book. Highly recommended. ... show more

  • Excellent read; I am a huge fan!
As a new attorney who does not have it in my personality to enjoy being my own collections agent, I thoroughly appreciate what Brita Long is teaching through her book “The Happier Attorney.” The book is well-thought out and I will certainly be implementing more and more of Brita’s ideas and advice into my own practice. ... show more

  • Everyone Needs this Book
Seriously! Everyone practicing law needs to read this book. I think there would be far fewer unhappy attorneys. The idea of abandoning the billable hour is absolutely radical to some, but every argument she’s making makes sense. The clients I have suggested it to appreciate the transparency, and I save so much time and feel much less irritated about doing tasks knowing that I will be compensated for them. I don’t have to argue with clients about bills after they go out which ruins my entire day and eats up time I can’t bill. No more forgetting to track time then seriously underestimating the time I spent. She writes in a clear, conversational yet authoritative tone that’s easy to follow and an absolute breeze to read ... show more
