  • A solid beginner telescope with some minor gripes
This telescope is appropriate labeled for beginners. If you or a child are interested in astronomy but don't want to spend hundreds of dollars for a high end telescope as you're trying to figure out if this is a passion or a fad, this is perfect. When you open the box, it's completely filled with the backpack that contains all the items. Everything was well packaged in bubble wrap inside of plastic bags, with no visible damage to any contents. Assembly is straightforward, but will take a couple of minutes. Once it was put together, it worked exactly as anticipated though using the viewfinder is a bit tricky as the image isn't inverted. The magnification is as advertised and the image was clear without any blurring, scratches, or noticeable distortion. I tested both 16x and 40x lenses. It took a bit of fiddling to align the phone mount, but that also worked. Where I got a bit frustrated was tearing it down. The tripod has to be disassembled to fit back into the backpack. There are four individual pockets on the padding for the tripod/telescope as well as a single large pocket on the inside of the shell. The problem is that two of the individual pockets are too small to actually hold any of the included accessories, other than potentially the Barlow lens, but that's such a tight fit that you'll lose the lens protector trying to get it back out. The accessory tray is too big to fit anywhere other than loosely inside the bag. Yes, it's portable but not conveniently so. The tripod is also OK at this price point. The legs offer a good range of the height for the user, which is appreciated. The horizontal adjustment on the tripod is solid but the vertical adjustment is disappointing. It's not possible for me to make it tight enough to stop minor slippage or to avoid it from moving with slight pressure. Even pressing my eye up to the lens sometimes adjusted the height very slightly and, when looking at things many miles away, that's not insignificant. Still, bear in mind that this is marketed for beginners and it meets those needs. ... show more

  • Great Value
I think that this is a great introduction to astronomy for kids, especially with the phone attachment where parents can view at the same This is a good size introductory telescope. I love the different lenses that allow for a view of the moon, planets, stars, planets, even birds. The tripod design is nice. It has a removable round piece keeping it from falling when getting jarred , The main lens to ours was scratched, but we were able to use it anyway. I never had a telescope growing up, but my daughter had a nice expensive one. I got this for my grandson. He's only 8 years old. I don't think you would give an 8 year old anything more than this, however, being deprived as a child, I enjoy using this telescope myself Additionally, it comes with a backpack to carry everything. It's a great idea, for camping, getting out of the city lights, however, it's not the perfect setup as far as a place for everything to easily and safely go, especially for a kid or teen. I, however, do think it's a great value and do recommend this telescope. I just have to remove a star, because ours came with a scratched lens, and the backpack issues. They are not big enough issues to say this isn't a great value for the money. ... show more

  • Versatile, fun, and - especially with a phone - a great introduction to astronomy for kids
This is the second telescope like this that I've ordered, mostly because I've enjoyed a similar (slightly larger) one that's currently next to our living room window. Astronomical telescopes have come a long way since I was little, and struggled to see anything farther away than the Moon. I'm enjoying mine far more than I'd expected to. This telescope is a great size to introduce children and teens to telescopes. With different lenses, the whole family can view the Moon, the planets, birds on the backyard fence, and aircraft overhead. Even better, with the phone adapter, everyone can enjoy the telescope at the same time, looking at the screen on the phone instead of - one by one - squinting through the eyepiece... though the latter works fine, too. The tripod design is excellent, as the removable round insert prevents the tripod from collapsing unexpectedly if someone bumps it. I'm not sure this telescope is planetarium quality. But, as an introduction to telescopes, this is an excellent value, and something I'd give as a gift to relatives. (Yes, I may order more of them.) Every child should grow up with a telescope, and this is a fun way to spark their appreciation of astronomy, bird watching, etc. Even better, stargazing can be a happy family activity, too. ... show more
