Update: After some tinkering, I was able to eliminate the slop in the mount. If you notice play, particularly in pitch adjustment, remove the plastic cap at the pivot point on the right side. There should be three socket cap screws Allen screws. Tighten these screws up and you SHOULD remove the play/slop in pitch adjustment. I’m adding a star since I was able to fix the issue, but I’m not going to give 5 stars due to the lack of documentation on adjusting the stand itself. Telescope performs well enough. We were able to faintly make out Jupiter during our first use, but with how terrible the stand it, it makes it nearly impossible to view or set a position. The azimuth mount has way too much play in it. While I like the telescope itself, the stand is bad enough that I want to return the unit and just spend the extra money on a reputable model. I’m currently browsing higher quality telescope oriented mounts or just adapting it to my camera tripod. Either way, it’s a real shame that the stand is so terrible. ... show more

  • Good telescope for beginners
First of all, I'm pretty new to astronomy and stargazing and using telescopes. I got this one because I've had a cheap telescope in my garage for years and every time I use it, it's more trouble than it's worth. Finally I decided it was time to get a better one without spending a lot of money. A friend recommended that I get a reflector telescope with an azimuth mount and after looking for awhile, I finally settled on this one. The price was right and I like the fact that it included a cell phone mount that I knew would be compatible with the telescope. I'm quite happy with it. The first thing I noticed was that the instruction manual is better than I expected. Being new and not knowing much, that was invaluable. As with most things, I tried using the telescope without using the manual. I basically just put it together, waited until night, and went out and tried to see things. That didn't work out so well. The manual walks you through aligning the viewfinder and how to use the telescope. From the manual, I learned that I had the magnification backwards for the lenses. I was trying to use the highest magnification to find things in the sky. The manual describes the Moon, some terrestial objects, and some nebulas and how they would look in the telescope with the different eyepieces. The manual also includes a lot of tips that are helpful. Humorously, it also includes a note to "Ask your parents for help if your telescope is really dirty" at one point. The telescope came with three lenses: a 20mm eyepiece (25x magnification), a 10mm eyepiece (50x magnification), a Barlow Lens (1.5x magnification). The Barlow Lens screws onto a piece that can hold the other lenses, so it doubles the magnification to 35x and 75x. The Barlow Lens came with the cell phone holder, so that was a nice bonus. The cell phone holder works well, it slides right over the lenses, so you don't have to try to find the objects with the cell phone attached. The tripod is nice and stable. I was worried about that when I bought it, but I'm pretty impressed. I was worried that it would be rickety and the telescope would move around a lot and it would be hard to keep something in sight for others to see. I actually had a friends 9 year old accidentally kick the tripod leg, but it didn't move much and I was able to easily find the moon again. The azimuth mount is easy to use, but one thing I had to learn is that you only tighten it just enough to hold it still. I had been trying to tighten it more than necessary and was having problems with the telescope moving due to my twisting the arm too hard. Once I learned to be more gentle, it became much easier to use. Viewing the moon in this telescope is amazing. It's bright and clear and fills the 10mm eyepiece. I got a picture of it, but my picture is not the best. I thought I took a picture of it when I had it well focussed, but apparently not. Now that the moon is back in the night sky again, I'll give it another go. It will be easier now that I'm better with the telescope. Any telescope is going to take a bit of time to get to know. I wasn't really aware of that before. I didn't do that with my old telescope because it was so frustrating to use. This one makes it fun. I've taken it out even more than I expected because it's enjoyable to use. I'm still learning, but at least now I actually want to go out and try things. ... show more

  • My kids love it!
I have been looking for a telescope for a while to get my kids into astronomy. Reviews on most indicated they were hard to see through, and ease of visibility is super important when it comes to kids. Since I am a first time telescope user, ease of assembly and use were also very important. The reviews on this telescope were looking good. As a result, I bought it, and the reviews were not wrong. Setup was pretty easy - there's only one way to put it together! The finder scope was simple to attach, and a couple of minutes pointing and adjusting had it zero'd in. The screw adjusters are very easy. A quick note on the finder scope - you may be considering that the red dot will not be useful when locating celestial objects if you look at it first in the daytime. I assure you, this was critical to using the telescope once it came night. I was exceptionally grateful for this feature. Most newtonian telescopes require a process called collimation - to ensure the mirrors are lined up properly. Mine was lined up just fine right out of the box. The factory must do very precise work, because I saw reviews of telescopes many times this size and price that still required it. The tilt/swivel mechanism gives you just the right amount of adjustment - I thought I wanted it tighter, but then I pointed it at the moon and went to get my kids. In the two minutes I was gone, the moon was gone! I thought that maybe it didn't tighten down - but no, an astronomer friend assured me that the moon just moves that fast. Any tighter and I don't think you'd be able to keep up with the moon with all the tightening and loosening that would be involved! Speaking of the moon ... wow. I put the moon in the finder, and placed my eye to the eye piece. I realize that this moment happens for everyone regardless of the telescope ... but my breath was honestly completely taken away. I didn't anticipate the emotional response of looking at the details of the moon first hand. My kids exclaimed "I can see craters!" and it skipped a beat :) This above story is to show - the clarity is very good. There is no blurring, there is no distortion - everything is crystal clear. But if you want those crystal clear images, here are a few quick tips: 1. Your telescope mirror will NEVER be cleaner than the day you get it. Don't try to clean any specs of dust that get in there after the first use. Rubbing it with a cloth will never get it off, and you will never see that spec anyway. 2. Take your telescope outside ~10 mins before you want to use it so that it gets to ambient temperature. This will prevent "heat waves" from distorting the image. 3. If it is very cold outside, consider bagging your telescope when you bring it back into the warm, humid air. You really don't want condensation forming on the mirror. You could clean the mirror, but see rule #1. I hope this review helps someone else. This is a great telescope and a really value oriented price - and I am exceptionally happy with my purchase. My kids love using it, and I couldn't ask for more! ... show more

  • Reflector Telescope
Telescope was fine. Instructions were lacking. Diagram only for assembly...no words of explanation. No instructions as to how to use the telescope. Had to go to YouTube for that. Disappointing.
