  • Better video quality, poor installation and mounting (Updated 6/6/2020)
I had the original Ring Doorbell for about a year and really enjoyed it. It was cheap but lower quality video resolution. It was fine for the time I had it. When the same thing with improved video was being released, I jumped on it. I received it today and got it installed. The video quality is night and day as shown in the photos and much better than the 1st generation. Good work ring. Unfortunately, the installation and mounting sucks compared to the 1st generation. Why they did this, I have no clue but here are the issues. 1. The mounting plate on the first generation has connections for the wiring. This made it very easy to remove the device and charge, especially in the winter months where we live and the batteries lose charge. 2nd generation has a mounting plate and the wiring on the back of the unit, which was a pain especially when the existing wire is not very long. This will be a nightmare having to remove this and recharge compared to the 1st generation. I had no issues with the 1st generation. This is a failure for Ring in my opinion. I am debating about keeping my 1st generation instead of this now. 2. The mounting of the device to the frame also sucks. The 1st literally had no gaps and was secure in my opinion. It had guides that made the doorbell align to the mount. The 2nd generation does not and there are gaps all the way around and loose. I mounted it no differently than before, in fact the holes for 1st and 2nd generation are identical which is a plus, but again I see this mounting as a failure for Ring. I literally just installed this, and outside of the perfect video, I can’t attest to motion and nightvision yet. I am disappointed in the execution of mounting the device. I have no idea why this changed this from the 1st generation but this was a bad move in my opinion. I still have no idea why these require a battery they never stay charged when connected to wiring, but I assume this unit will have the same issue for me as well come winter. They really need to rethink the whole battery idea and have a hardwired version and battery version or fix the way these thing function when power is applied. At this point I may deal with it and hope Ring fixes these mounting and wiring flaws. If this mounted the same way as the 1st generation, I would not be writing a review because I had no issues with the device other than the battery and that wasn’t enough for me to write a review. Excellent otherwise but seriously why did you change the way these mount? ***Update 6/6/2020*** So I decided to keep it primarily because I had already offered to sell my 1st generation to a neighbor, but I did end up having to make some changes. Ultimately I bought some spade terminals and soldered them to my doorbell wire with heat shrink tubing (Ring provided in older versions, but not this one for some reason). While it was easy for me, it won’t be for others. Overall I am still upset over this mounting as it is extremely poor execution when the previous version was perfect. I guess this is Rings way to get the price down to $99 by cutting corners. The doorbell it self seems quality but mounting just plain sucks. I have no other words for it. You can see my updated photos of what I did. There are two photos that show the camera quality difference. The low quality image is from a generation 1 ring and the better quality HD is from the generation 2 ring. Night vision appears to be decent and motion the jury is still out because of the People only filter. I am still trying to tweak it. I am still leaving only 3 stars because of the mounting issues and there is still a gap between the mounting plate and the doorbell. Maybe Ring will fix and send everyone a new mount, but that is wishful thinking. ... show more

  • Highly recommended
Color: Satin Nickel Configuration: Doorbell only
For the money it's well worth the buy. The video is great, the audio is good. It's been a little glitchy here and there but messing with the settings has helped. I've never owned one before and I'm a bit of a techno-tard and even I could figure it out. Was very easy to set up. It's a great peace of mind to have. I've already had to use to for someone trespassing on my property at 230 am scoping out our cars. I got the notification on my phone and was able to sync my indoor cam with it faced out the window and it stitched the 2 videos together so they were on camera the whole time in one video. That's a really awesome feature to have. I really like this camera. Hopefully it lasts a long time and hopefully the battery is as good as they say it is. Its at 83% after 2 weeks and I have it set to very high sensitivity. I was anticipating I'd have to charge it every few days, I'm super happy it's stayed almost fully charged after 2 weeks. At this rate I'll get 8+ weeks out of 1 charge if I did my math correctly. ... show more

  • Great camera, excellent field of vision, lots of functionality
Color: Venetian Bronze Configuration: Doorbell only
I had never bought Ring devices, or installed monitoring equipment myself before this. I do not have a wired doorbell and did not want to install wiring so I went with this wifi wireless model and am very pleased. All equipment that’s needed to install it, and for this camera to work, is all included in this package. (Separately, I bought a no-drill mounting bracket, but did not need it and returned it for full credit.) For this model, I did use my own electric drill to make the four holes to mount the bracket on my door frame. The box is surprisingly small. Upon opening it, I found the instructions and followed them. The instructions are not long, but are clear and I found them adequate. There is a support number if you get stuck. I started the camera charging right away and let it charge for a day. While that was going on, I read the instructions and planned where I would place the Ring. I also downloaded the app and set up my account, looked at the features, and checked out the online Ring.com site. Note: I scanned the QR code on the box to set up the device, not the code on the instructions, because the one on the instructions was not working. After that, I installed the camera mounting bracket. Measure and mark carefully the exact placement of the mounting screw holes. Use the correct set of screws (the wood screws provided in the kit). Then drill the mounting holes level and square or else the screws might not sit flush on the bracket or Ring might be slanted/crooked. In my case, I did not need the wall anchors. Pro Tip: Don’t screw down the bracket tightly at first — loosen or tighten as needed to ensure the bracket is absolutely flat against the wall, not warped. It must be flat or else the camera won’t mount flat on it and you might not be able to insert the security screws. After I put the camera onto the mounting bracket, I inserted the security screws. Again don’t over tighten these. Then I tested the various features and everything worked. I set up the camera to work with Alexa and selected or deselected various options. There are a LOT of options but it’s a good idea to get familiar with all of them. One month of free video recording comes with it. I highly recommend subscribing after the first month. I paid for a year in advance but you can also subscribe for US$3.99/mo. The camera has very good resolution and night vision. Easy to use. Criticism: The one criticism I have is that the camera sometimes dows not detect fast motion like someone running by it. ... show more

  • Great for the money
Color: Satin Nickel Configuration: Doorbell only
I personally think it’s a great buy it came with no damage to it set up was easy the only thing I am having issues with is it doesn’t tell me someone is on my porch until after they have came and gone but my son couldn’t find me and his phone was in the car so he pushed the button and I answered and after finding out where I was he told me how AWESOME the doorbell cam was lol! The picture is clear and I could hear my son just fine. I don’t know about the other side yet cause I just got it put up today but so far so good I definitely feel a little mor comfortable being able to see what’s going on outside my house and so far there is no lag! If I have any issues I’ll definitely update this! ... show more
