  • Good unit for hobbyist. Tube life was under a year though.
So I bought this unit in 2021 for myself Dec 23rd 2021, to be exact. Its my second K40 unit as the first one went after around 3 years and good use until tube died from age and ended with a white beam light (Life Ended). This unit from OMTech is good, not much different from stock, but small things make it better such as button touch and tactile feel makes it feel like it would last. Emergency button is good but the power button is right there as well so a bit of redundancy but I understand its good for those users that "Panic" easily... Update to less than a year later, November 29th 2022, while doing some Christmas Ornaments on the machine, I noticed that nothing was cutting mid way. After tinkering it came down to laser tube just not firing, power supply good, test button getting power and everything looks like it works just nothing on the tube and no current passing through. Overall good unit in build for the price, but may have an issue with lifespan of the components. ... show more

  • Good base for people with DIY skills; not a plug and play machine
Good BASE laser cutter that does its job, but needs some help to work optimally. This is a product for someone with some DIY skills, not someone who is looking for a plug and go machine. It requires $100-200 in additional parts to make it work optimally, as described below. The laser itself is pretty strong, and for our purposes, we only need to run it on about 15% power to cut through 3mm wood sheets. Overall it's still a good value, works pretty well, and was packaged well. It just needs a little help. Issues to expect: 1. I think someone else mentioned that the air outtake vent covers the back part of the print bed, effectively making the useable space smaller than the promised dimensions. The laser is actually able to go OVER that area, too! Dangerous. My husband had to remove this metal piece and grind off an inch or so of material so that it wasn't in the path of the laser anymore, and the whole bed could actually be used. 2. The bed was a bit too low, so the lens wasn't focusing as well as it should. He added some metal mesh propped on blocks underneath to raise it by about half an inch so the cuts were more clean. You could also, instead, buy a different lens with a longer focal length to focus on the given distance better. 3. Test cuts on wood worked fine, but cutting paper ended up smoking up the lens to the point that it essentially lasered itself and broke. We had to get a replacement lens, and also added on an air-assist nozzle to blow air onto the item as it's being cut, to disperse the smoke faster and prevent lens clouding. 4. The vent fan on the back of the unit didn't vent out the smoke fast enough to prevent the room from getting smoky, so we bought a secondary fan plus some ducting to vent the smoke out of the house. This part might not be needed if you're able to place your machine directly by a window, but we weren't able to, so it needed more power to move the air across the room through ducts. 5. The screws holding the machine together are awful, like a blind old man handmade each one. Lol. It's not the end of the world... They manage to hold, it's just weird and inconvenient, and I felt worth noting. 6. LCD screen dies after a little while of use and becomes unreadable.. It comes back after you turn it off for a while. Not exactly sure what the issue is with that. Again, not really the end of the world, just annoying. ... show more

  • A bit of hackery needed, but it does the job well.
I took me a day to get this cutting something, because I took the hard road - trying to do it with a mac. LaserDRW for the mac does not understand the controller in the machine and most other software does not run on macos. All was well once I found the useful mac port of K40 Whisperer and worked out the mystery scaling problem between inkscape and K40 Whisperer, which is most easily solved by drawing the paths in Affinity designer and exporting as SVG, since Affinity doesn't put the resolution information in the SVG so K40 Whisperer is forced to ask you to what the resolution is (it doesn't otherwise offer the option) and so you can put in the correct information. In the case of inkscape it pulls the wrong resolution and the scale is off. I'm a little weirded by the viewing window. I assume it's a suitable filter for the laser (10.5um btw - so you can buy the right safety glasses) but it doesn't say that anywhere in the documentation. So I'm covering it until the safety glasses arrive. Now I have that all going and I can cut the shapes I need, I'm happy with it. The laser is well focused, the machine responds to commands from the computer as it should, the clamp is dumb and I'll be modding it in time. I'm happy because I could have spent three to six times more for a more plug and play machine which at the end of day would not be cutting any better. The least good bit is the safety features, or lack thereof. Most importantly there is no lid sensor to turn off the laser if you open the lid. I'll be adding one of those. You could start a fire when cutting wood, so you need to keep an eye on it. I'm still waiting for the cast acrylic sheets to arrive, so I can't report on that and that's what I'm primarily intending to cut for my crazy lab experiments. Summary: It's cheap, built well, it works, you might need to employ a bit of brain power to get the software going and you need to apply suitable precautions. ... show more
