  • Pleasant Interlude
Bottomline: I really enjoyed these two books were sold together as a Kindle package. Granted, part of the enjoyment was that it was the right book at the right time. Perhaps you have had times when you can appreciate an escape from stress and anxiety in your reading. If so, you know what I mean. Mrs. Harris is an engaging character who works as a char woman in London. You are lucky indeed if Mrs. Harris works for you. In an unlikely twist, Mrs. Harris is determined to own a Dior gown. A gown that she will never have an occasion to wear. She just wants to own something that beautiful and she is willing to scrimp and do without in order to save that amount of money. It’s not a simple task, and it takes her several years. Mrs. Harris is a curious mixture of insight, naiveite, and bulldog. I liked her and her best friend. Not surprisingly, her trip to Paris does not go as she expected. Her path is filled with interesting and entertaining characters. In Mrs. Harris goes to New York, Mrs. Harris and her best friend are invited to accompany a client to New York to help them get settled in their new apartment and train staff to take over when they return to New York. Things get complicated when Mrs. Harris and her friend conspire to take a young boy with them. He had been living with an unofficial and abusive foster family next door to Mrs. Harris. She is convinced that she can rescue him from that situation by taking him to New York and finding his ex-Air Force American father. Once again, the journey does not go as expected and neither does the search for the boy’s father. The books are uplifting and enjoyable even as Mrs. Harris runs into seemingly insurmountable obstacles and disappointments. There are characters from the first book that appear in the second and you will enjoy the book more if you have read the first one. The writing is fluent, and the pacing is brisk, so the pages turn quickly. Both books are set in the 1950’s and there are many events that were unlikely then and impossible now. ... show more

  • a lovely departure
GOES TO PARIS: a London char, widowed for years sets her heart on a Dior dress from France. She meets many friends she hadn’t known before as she finally gets to leave London for a short time to buy her dress. GOES TO NEW YORK: Mrs Harris and Mrs Butterfield do their best to free a young boy from a foster home filled with bullies. And if finding the boy’s father means going to America and meeting every George Brown, well miracles seem to happen when Mrs Harris is around. ... show more

  • Lighthearted Tales To Enjoy
I first read Mrs Harris Goes to Paris as a 13-year-old girl and thoroughly enjoyed it, but forgot about it with the passage of time. With the release of the film based on Paul Gallico's novel, I found myself wanting to read it again, but thought it was likely out of print. Fortunately, the film sparked the re-release of this lighthearted tale of the indomitable Cockney cleaning lady possessed of a heart of gold and brimming with optimism. Even better, the Kindle edition I purchased includes a sequel, Mrs Harris Goes to New York, that I was unaware of previously. I enjoyed both and recommend them to anyone who enjoys a bit of escapist entertainment from a sunnier time. ... show more
