  • Loved most of it but…
This book toggles back and forth between Macy’s teenage years and her current adult life. It takes you through her entire relationship with the love of her life when she was young and eludes to a massive event that tore them apart for 11 years until a chance encounter as adults at which time they have to decide whether to keep going on their current path or try to put the pieces back together. (Spoilers ahead) The good: 1 - great writing that’s easy to follow and the flipping between time periods isn’t frustrating. I was equally interested in the past and current chapters which is a rarity. 2 - captivating premise of a girl recovering from losing her mom and growing up, building strong trust, and eventually falling in love with the boy next door 3 - good hook of wanting to know what the big event could possibly have been to tear them apart. I stayed so interested I couldn’t put the book down because I wanted to know so badly. The not so good: 1 - I wanted to, but I just didn’t love Elliott. I realize the point was that he brought down her walls about her mom but I found him a bit intrusive and nosey even when she was clearly upset. Also not a fan of him dating other girls and being a bit cagey and secretive about it with Macy when he knew how innocent and naive she was. 2 - the “big event” was worthy… her dad dying in a car accident when coming to pick her up because of him totally made me understand her not wanting to talk with him for years and why that would have been big enough to tear them apart. Add that to her finding him cheating on her with the girl she suspected all along? Absolutely devastating. But then he managed to win her back by saying he thought it was her the whole time and didn’t know he’d slept with someone else?! LAME. The entire point of their relationship was how close they were and how well they knew each other. I don’t care how drunk you are… you don’t think you’re sleeping with the love of your life when you’re not. And even his friend made a comment to her about how he did this from time to time. I’m not saying a couple couldn’t work through infidelity but there should be a better explanation than saying “I thought it was you”… I can’t imagine a girl like Macy just accepting such a lame excuse. In sum, if they had just made his explanation of what happened and why he did it better, this could have been a knock out 5 star rated book for me. ... show more

  • Sweetest friendship to love
I devoured this as my last book of 2022, on New Years Eve. It's first-person POV from just Macy. The story switches from present day in San Francisco and her teenage years in Northern California wine country, falling in friendship and love with neighbor boy Elliott. They love books and words and I adored their nerdiness. This story is sadder and sweeter than the last few CL books I read, more like Once Upon a Blue Moon than Unhoneymooners. I also described it to my mom as the graduation from Sarah Dessen books. So much summertime young love. There are discussions of grief, puberty, family bonds, friendship changing and relationship needs. I was extra sensitive to the father daughter relationship. I was raised by a single dad, though not a widower and with a little brother. Still a challenge. I would definitely reread this book and decide how else Macy could have handled her heartbreak. Elliott was so perfect in so many ways, and yet still human and real. ... show more

  • Beyond Sweet
This book is so beautiful and beyond sweet. I went into it, knowing there was so much hype around it and knowing that I would likely love it - and I did. Macy and her dad go to an open house, looking for a house to serve as a weekend escape. At the open house, Macy finds a boy, Elliot, sitting in her soon-to-be bedroom closet. They discover they both love to read, and a friendship is born. Every time that Macy comes to the house, her and Elliot spend hours sitting in the closet-turned-library reading, asking each other deep questions that they would never ask anybody else (i.e., Elliot asking Macy about her mom who passed away, discussions about sex, etc.), and forming a meaningful friendship. The book shifts timelines each chapter; going from 11 years ago in the weekend getaway house, the current day San Francisco where Macy and Elliot have run into each other after more than a decade. It’s clear there is hurt on both sides, but that there is still a deep love between the two of them. But it’s not that easy because Macy is currently engaged to Sean, a freelance writer, and Elliot does not have the full story of what happened 11 years ago and why Macy cut him out of her life. This book felt deep and I could feel the emotions, it was like everyone says truly beautiful. It was a pleasant, and easy 4 star read for me. It wasn’t quite five stars because I’m not the biggest fan of spice scenes because I find them hard to be written well and found some lines to be a little cringe-worthy. But it was still a great read. ... show more

  • Wow
I Almost have no words for this book. One of the most beautiful stories about the friendship/relationship every girl dreams of. The life moments Macy went through having Elliot by her side. He was the friend every girl wants. One of my favorite parts is how he talks her through starting her period. He was so gracious and understand during such a life changing moment for someone who doesn’t Have a woman figure in her life anymore. This book came full circle and leaves me wanting so much more, but in a good way. Im going to be thinking about this book for days to come. ... show more

  • Overall, excellent, with one exception
I’m a little broken hearted to be docking one point off this review, because the vast majority of the book was just outstanding. Like, literally breathless, fetch the smelling salts outstanding. But the big revelation about why Macy stayed away for so long nearly ruined the whole thing for me. It made zero sense whatsoever, and I didn’t buy it. I didn’t buy that Elliot wouldn’t have found out about all of it. I didn’t buy that, after such a powerful connection of so many years, she would have just shut him out like that, especially when she basically had no one else. I didn’t buy any of it. But the overall love story between them was so moving and erotic that it somehow overcomes the glaring plot holes. This is the third Christina Lauren book for me, and each one has left me with a book hangover for weeks afterward; this one will be no exception. ... show more
