  • Works great but...
I've had this NVR for a little over a year now and have no issues. The NVR itself is solid, but the software takes time to learn how to use. If you are hoping to just plug it in, and hook up your cameras you will be disappointed. You have to have some Networking skills and know how to properly configure the system. It took me quite a while of trial and error, and the system is working exactly the way i need it to work for me. Lorex support is hit or miss. If you contact them you may find yourself on the phone for hours going nowhere. My suggestion - search the internet - there is tons of helpful info on how to setup, configure and use the system. ... show more

  • Excellent Quality
Takes awhile to understand the workings but just stay with it. Lorex does a great job and quality is excellent. Purchased with two cameras to start with. Put my own system together, cost a little more than the sets but it's the way to go. Cameras: 2- Pack of Lorex 8MP 4K IP Motorized Varifocal Zoom Bullet Security Camera LNB8973BW, 250ft IR Night Vision, 4x Zoom ...unbelievable resolution and excellent at night. ... show more

  • UPDATED: Good HW Bad SW
UPDATED: Giving this system 1 star (would give 0 if possible). After a few weeks of using this system its SW design is probably one of the poorest I have ever seen and the lack of any kind of updated FW coupled with really bad support via their website makes this unusable for most. I do like the general layout for the monitoring camera (1/2x2/3x3/etc) and the ability to quickly click and drill down on a stream. Playback is ok from a timeline perspective but the overall UI is horrible and not very intuitive. You often have to fight settings and many buttons/options arent usable as the system keeps fighting you refreshing values you don't want. The autoconfig for IP cameras is fine out of the box BUT if you had cameras prior to the NVR where you manually set them up with IP addresses it creates a mess. For two of my cameras because the settings must have been stored somewhere on the NVR after I plugged them in they wouldnt come up. Think there is an easy way to factory reset a camera? Nope, you have to completely open up the housing to reach a tiny unmarked reset button. Careful not to mess any wiring up in there and realign the camera internals to the house properly if you want a level shot. USB/HDD external drives are a good feature but a joke to setup. You would think ExFAT for the filesystem but NOPE. It's NTFS or FAT32. NTFS on an embedded linux system??? Ok... Formatting that external device via the system UI is a joke. Plug in the device, it complains about incompatible filesystem. You have to select it from a dropdown and act like you're trying to backup a recording before it offers the option to actually format the device. Horrible horrible design. As for mobile (iPad Pro) app it works easily to let you monitor the cameras however the aspect ratio is messed up which is too bad. If Lorex would just clean up their SW and release some updated FW for the NVR and cameras it would be a good system. Otherwise it's mainly a bunch of overpriced components that should work just fine if you set it up the first time without touching anything else (changing the camera settings directly). Once its up and running it works just fine. It's one of those set it and forget it type systems. Just use the basic mouse to click on the various cameras to watch the live streams or a playback. Nothing else. Also keyboard support would be nice. I mean honestly clicking keys via a virtual keyboard to authenticate is kind of ridiculous. The irony is the UI forces strong password practices so get ready to do a lot of SHIFT and finding symbols using a mouse... ORIGINAL REVIEW: As a career engineer and techie I would say this is a nice HW solution but the software quality and user experience is really bad. For example the UI client SW for Windows and MacOS are really buggy. Lorex Client 12/13 seems to be full of bugs and half the things I click on do nothing or throw errors. Trying to use a web browser to connect to the NVR itself works BUT none of the video feeds work until you use a plugin. The main plugin of choice being the NACL ones from Google Browser/plugins library. I don't like Google due to privacy reasons so that forces me to use their browser in order to support the NACL plugin to get live video stream support. Basic configurations like IP addressing, time/NTP config, user account management, authentication timeout are all easy to figure out. When it comes to cameras however that's another area fraught with bugs. Trying to change the settings on a camera to change encoders from H.264 to H.265 Super causes other settings/fields in the config screen to default or change. Even when you change one value at a time and click SAVE it doesn't always stick when you make a change to another field. Probably has something to do with the camera settings/API refresh back to the NVR but still its a really bad user experience when you can't just make your changes and done. As for the fan comments in other posts not sure if it was a design problem or isolated incident. My unit has a fan thats about average sound for what I would expect out of a 1U switch. As for support the Lorex website is horrific. You can't locate or even find firmware easily. Seems like most of their products (I have 3 different version of their cameras) don't have firmware updates just whatever they went to market with at that time. I didnt see any FW updates for the NVR either, still from 7/2018. I would say if you are an experienced person (networking/computers) go for it. If you're someone like my parents in their golden years who easily get frustrated with technology you should pass . ... show more

  • Nice system
Needed a replacement for one that was hit by lightning. Replaced my old one and added an additional harddrive for a total of 6TB. Recording 5, 4K cameras, at highest settings continuously, which is saving about 3 weeks of storage.

  • works well as it should but
I have a similar model Lorex that I bought with a set of 3 4K night vision and 3 2K camera. I had mine installed not via Amazon since I had issues with the folks they had in their list. The recording and images are excellent as expected but my big problem is the annoying set-up with their software and the 6 character only password. At first set-up I received instant notification and when the entire camera was completely installed ,something changed and now I cant get a notification but only thru my hubby's account. This is with the help of their tech support. Really annoying ... show more

  • home use
I have had this system for over a year and have not had any issues. They did update their Client Software and now I can't get it to work on my Macbook but it works on my pc at work so it's fine. The Mobile platform is also updated and works nicely. I would recomment this system, wish the firmware updates made it possible to use the 2 way talk camera's but it's not the end of the world. ... show more
