This is a very strongly built unit and very flat. My thoughts of this unit vs one from my engraver manufacturer: Pros of this unit 1) This is 1/3 the price (money left for materials) 2) The holes are closer together, which helps keep smaller cut pieces from falling through 3) Comes with 8 “hold down” fasteners (vs none) Pros of original unit 1) grate is magnetic, use thin magnets to hold down material. I use a lot of card stock and the fasteners of unit under review don’t hold thin card stock 2) comes with “lifter” magnets to raise unit off workspace. The unit under review comes with 8 adhesive “feet”. I doubled them and placed one set on each corner. Problem solved Overall thoughts For the price, this is a fantastic honeycomb. The $110 savings would go a long way towards materials. It’s flatness is superb. You may have to change your settings slightly due to the aluminum grate heat transfer and size of the holes, especially with very thin material. ... show more

This is a preliminary review based on assembling the unit, the design and construction of the unit, and reading through the manual. I will update this review once I do some projects. Assembly: The product page promotes this as an easy to assemble unit and I would say it lives up to that promise. I took my time and still had it fully assembled in less than a half hour. The assemble instructions were good enough to complete the task but I would have welcomed some more detailed, closer in pictures so there would be no doubt of where things went. Design and Construction: Overall this is well designed and built. The frame is very solid and cable management is well though out. It even includes a drag chain for cable management which is a nice touch Instructions: As mentioned above, the instructions were good enough for product assembly. I find them a little lacking with regards to the "big picture"- they talk about several ways to control it and multiple pieces of software but really don't go into why one might be preferable to another. Also it talks about how one of the pieces of software can control an air pump, but no air pump is included and the benefits of adding one as an accessory isn't explained. Much or all of this can be found from third party sources online, but it would be nice to have more help provided. Overall, I think it's a solid machine in which I hope the documentation improves. The Swiitol Laser Engraver 18W Laser Cutter in my opinion is a good place to start for learning laser engraving. There are many different kinds of laser engravers, and whatever you what to accomplish with one, should determine which kind to buy. Before you start actually creating, you will need to get comfortable with software to create your art. Swiitol Laser Engraver supports LaserGRBL , which is an open source software. They also support LightBurn, which offers you a 30 day trial and then you need to purchase it for a cost of about $350 US. You will spend most of your time inside the editing software. You could even use GIMP, which I think is still free, and is Windows based. The instruction manual has the basic steps to follow to install either LaserGRBL or LightBurn software. Once you have designed what you wish to burn, it's best to try a small test job. I'm still designing a test job for my Swiitol Laser Engraver. As near I as can tell, there are some materials that are not able to be used in the Swiitol Laser Engraver. I believe some metals, and clear acrylic are examples. But that leaves a lot of other materials! I will try and update my review when I have run some jobs on the burner. For the cost, this seems to do quite a bit.     • Makes a Huge Difference
Size: Honeycomb Working Table
This year I was laser cutting some toys and puzzles for Christmas, and this honeycomb made a big difference in the quality compared to the ones that I made last year without using a honeycomb base. The cuts were much cleaner with less soot and residue, and it was easier to dial in the cutting profiles since I could see exactly when the laser cut all the way through. I’m not using a very powerful laser, so I need to make multiple passes to cut all the way through thicker sheets of wood. With this, it’s easy to set it for the exact number of passes to save time and get more consistent results. There’s not much assembly to be done. There are just a couple of rubber pads to apply. It’s kind of nice that it comes with some push-in clips to hold your material down, and I also like the rulers along the sides. I am keeping the box that it came in, since it stores very well inside of it when it’s not being used. ... show more

I own an xtool laser engraving machine and this honeycomb laser bed works great. Its a great size for cutting boards and smaller projects. However, it was very disappointing when it didn't arrive with instructions. Although its easy to install the stickers it comes with, the clips however have no significant purpose. I checked the ad on Amazon hoping there will be an explanation to them maybe hold the material down to be engraved but didn't have any luck. ... show more
