  • Thank goodness...
I've been hiring people for most of my career and I'm relieved that David Snyder documented what *should* have been in the gut of every hiring manager - it's all about character. His anecdotes, humor - even song references - made this a quick read, but crucial for any company who wants to go forward and not stay stagnant. What I got out of this is that it's more important to hire a person than a skillset. Sometimes it's hard to convince the higher ups, but this book will now be my armor to do just that. If you will hire anyone anytime soon (or in the future) read this first. ... show more

  • Practical, pragmatic, and to the point
Anyone who has ever been involved in the hiring process knows that there's a gap between finding candidates who market themselves well and finding the ones who will excel on the job. This book takes some of the mystery out of the process of filling that gap by suggesting practical approaches for assessing the character traits that are common to high performers, and how your organization might need to change to attract those people. It's also useful if you're a job seeker who wants to differentiate yourself from the rest of the field. This book is clearly and concisely written, a quick read, but by no means fluffy. Instead, it does what the interview process itself seeks to do: distill what's important, make the next steps obvious, and let everyone get back to the business at hand in a more successful way. Bravo! ... show more

  • High Performers are More than a Skill Spec Sheet
David Snyder offers a candid look at what separates high performers from those who just collect a paycheck. Further, the book points out the employer responsibility to identify what is relevant to job performance such that search criteria are valid. A good read for those seeking to hire or looking to be hired reminding us that high performers are a total package of skills and personal traits aligned to a position rather than a laundry list of past skills. ... show more

  • Excellent tool for hiring the best senior people
Every HR executive and retained executive recruiter has heard a client say of a finalist candidate, "We're not there yet" This usually means "this person fits the bill on paper, but we not going forward to make a hire." Sometimes "we're not there yet," means, we thought we knew what we wanted, but now that we see it, we don't. In the very worst cases "we're not there yet," means, go find more people exactly like this one (who we just decided not to hire.) How does one fix this problem and hire a champion for this job? How to Hire a Champion is about uncovering all of the information that will help you to recognize a champion and go after him or her. If you have ever launched a search for a "C" level executive, you know that a senior candidate pool will be full of people with great resumes. Many senior level job descriptions, with their lists of skills and experience muddy the waters and obscure the company's priorities. How to Hire a Champion helps an executive or a hiring team define what a company is after and put candidates through truly helpful screening. I smiled all the way through this book. The process presented will get you a long way toward hiring a champion and it may have your hiring team cheering. ... show more

  • Dr. M. S. White, J.D.
David Snyder has written a superb book on how to hire the right people for your organization. It is filled with helpful strategies and tools that you can use to explore who a person really is and determine if they will fit your needs and those of your organization. Unlike other approaches which frequently just skim the surface, David Snyder shows you how to dig below the surface to find out whether a candidate is a person of character or simply a chameleon who changes color according to which way the wind is blowing. Not only does he provide valuable strategies for hiring champions, but he also explains what organizations need to do to attract champions because true champions want to work for championship organizations. Lastly, one of the best things about this book is that it is easy to read and is filled with entertaining examples. David Snyder has a comfortable writing style that makes you feel as if he is sitting across the table from you personally explaining the concepts to you. ... show more
