  • Red cards so difficult to see
$200? That's ridiculous. This is obviously only for serious card collectors who have money. It's not really beneficial for actual card playing. The red cards are really difficult to see; they really should have used a better color contrast. The solid feel makes cutting a deck one handed easy. But shuffling cards is more difficult. ... show more

  • Unique, a great collectors item, but hard to use for card games.
If you play a lot of cards, and you collect different sets of playing cards, then these are for you. But if you seek to use these cards for poker or other card games be warned they are not optimal for card play. First, they are very slippery and worse still, tend to associate with the cards above or below. Furthermore, they are nearly impossible to shuffle properly due to their stiffness and association with one another. When I first got these I checked to make sure all the cards were present and had trouble finding some of them. Turned out there were a number of cards stuck to each other. This problem slowly corrected itself after playing with the cards for a few hours and wearing them in. A second problem of more concern is that the red cards (hearts and diamonds) are very hard to read. That is because the red does not contrast well with the black background as shown in the third picture showing selected diamonds. If you are playing poker for money, this will be a serious issue. In contrast, the black cards (clubs and spades) are easy to assign because they markers are in white. So this set of cards is a mixed bag. Great for collectors but poor for players. But I do enjoy the feel of the cards so I enjoy using them for informal games and solitaire. But despite hours of playing with them, they still tend to stick to each other, due to what I suspect are dispersive (van der Waals) attraction of the carbon fiber based card stock. ... show more

  • Very Cool-Looking. period.
I chose this product because it presented differently than most cards I've ever seen. Because I anticipated upcoming holidays inviting gifts (birthdays, hallmark holidays, etc.), and because I have a large extended family who play card games, I decided to splurge on these cards because I generally love the carbon fiber look and feel and ruggedness. These cards might outlast my life through many a spill or dunk or whatever people do with cards outside of playing games at a table; and I'm not a poker player at all so maybe there's a way cards are used in a poker game that doesn't require them to be shuffled or handled. But as someone who plays the extra-poker gamut of Go Fish and solitaire to variations on bridge, they are not intended for me and my peeps. The first thing, which I fully anticipated might be tricky about carbon fiber over waxed card-stock: these don't bend easily when stacked. They are difficult to shuffle. I'm not unnaturally strong nor do I have arthritis, but part of the joy I take from playing cards is the shuffling and re-decking of them--the bridge that takes the newly-shuffled cards back to a neat stack with a flourish that eluded me as a young child until I mastered it because it's a soothing activity that's impressive to those who haven't spent countless hours since childhood first mastering, then simply enjoying the interplay with a deck of playing cards. They do make more noise when shuffled, but require a bit more dexterity than I've ever possessed to manipulate through the shuffle, and which precludes the flourishing bridge. Results may vary, but I've spent hours upon hours playing cards and I'd ditch these after the first game for basic reasons. While I expected they would be harder to shuffle, I'd not anticipated that within the first few hands of play they would start to lose their markings. After 13 hands of play (we decided upon using normal cards every other hand because of their shortcomings, the white paint on the backs and the red and white paint on the faces has begun to come off in chunks. So they really only look cool when you first open them. Unless you treat them like eyeglasses or rare jewels, I can't imagine there will be much utility in this deck beyond the initial wow-factor. (I feel like if I used these in every game I play, I'd soon begin to recognize the raised pattern of the faces of certain cards with my fingertips, which would give me an unfair advantage in many games relying upon the mystery of the face-down card.) I've just looked up the product listing to see if there is anything that means I'm just doing it wrong. I suppose if you had one of those electronic shufflers and really only ever handled them carefully, I might be wrong about how long they could be useful as cards beyond their seaworthiness. Another problem with this deck is how discernible they are across a table. White on black is fairly easy to read from a few feet, but red on black? Not so much. So if the spots haven't fallen off yet, they're still not at-a-glance legible. From my perspective, they are hard to use as one does playing cards--hard to handle, impermanently marked as individual cards distinguishable from 51-53 others, and requiring more second looks than card games generally favor. Because they fall so short in these categories, I'm not certain there's not some other negative like potentially toxic paint making its way into my snacks and my body. I think my first game with these cards was likely their last--and given their price, they are not worth it. (I see similar cards are available for possibly little more than a standard deck of ordinary cards, a potential savings of 90-plus percent.) If you want to gift the card shark who seriously has everything else already, or if you're busting out a pretty deck for the final round of a prestigious tournament, maybe you're the target audience. Given that they are in a "limited run" of 500 decks (mine was numbered in keeping with such a ruse) but remain nearly six years after they first became available, I'm guessing you're in a minority. If you need cards that are impervious to water while being susceptible to other cards and fingernails and skin oils, step right up. Caveat emptor. That said, though, they really are cool-looking. ... show more

  • Good to have a playing card with totally different material in my collection, I like it

  • Highly flexible, but poorly designed
I go these cards as I thought they would have a certain cache as carbon fiber cards. But the design of the cards is so inferior that I just can't give them a high rating. The images on the cards are faceted, which gives them a primitive look, and I suspect they are silk-screened onto the carbon fiber cards, which could give the images a limited life as the pigment could scratch or wear off. The red cards, heart and diamonds are printed on the black surface of the carbon cards and make them very difficult to read. The cards, though highly bendable, are extremely difficult to shuffle. Given all these drawbacks, I am unable to give this set of unique cards a high rating, despite them being a limited collector set. ... show more

  • Very quality set of cards... To buy or not to buy...
It's a little difficult to give a rating for these cards. I would give them a 5 for sure if I were giving a score on the quality of the cards and the fact that I think they would be beautiful and an excellent addition to a collectors collection. They are of course made from carbon fiber, are a sleek black, and are very sturdy. As many have mentioned, although they are absolutely beautiful, they are just not practical enough to play any games with. For example, if you were to play poker and you were trying to peak at them by bending them upwards towards you, they probably wouldn't bend far enough for you to see. Or if you are playing a game such as speed, trump, or solitaire, it would be a little difficult to quickly pick up the cards and they would probably easily slip away if they were placed on top of one another. I didn't want to give lower than a four star because I'm trying my best to imagine that these cards are actually meant for collectors, even if they aren't. To be transparent, I did receive these free as part of the Amazon Vine program, so that may also have affected my decision for the high rating. The price is pretty steep for "just" playing cards. If I factored in the price and my personal interest in using playing cards as they are meant to be used, I would probably give a rating closer to 1-2 stars. ... show more
