    • Don't get the kindle version
I personally do not recommend the kindle version for ANY of the Genki textbooks whichever edition. You cannot highlight anything, nor make notes. You can add bookmarks but it takes several persistent tries before the app will actually go to that bookmarked page. If reading the book on your phone, the text isn't comfortable to look at. You really need a bigger device. The actual physical book is vastly superior and it's just easier to get around in the book. Now on to a review of the information in the book. The information in this book is great. It introduces you to Kana and Kanji pretty quickly but not in an overwhelming way. The constant repetition of seeing words in kana and Kanji really helps it to stick. The information is presented in an easily digestible way and hits major grammar points. You have plenty of practice exercises at the end of each chapter and at the end of the book (so don't forget to look there). For self study I recommend getting the answer key book just to make sure you've done the problems correctly. The answer key will also have the answers for the workbook so that's a plus. Additionally, the publisher (Japan Times) has a free app that gives the audio for all of the conversations, vocabulary and many of the exercise questions. If you are doing self-study I really recommend not rushing through each chapter. Take your time. Fully know the material by heart before moving on; then periodically go back over what you've learned to make sure you still know everything. And while you're at it, since the app and CDs have the audio, practice listening and speaking until you understand what's going on and can say things smoothly without tripping over your words. ... show more

I haven't finished the book yet, but it is already very useful in helping with basic explanations. It is helpful to learn hiragana and katakana first (I recommend pod101 on Youtube) to get a better understanding of pronunciation. I used Pimsler's Japanese 1 language learning course before getting this book, but I believe I still would've been able to gain a lot of knowledge from this book without getting too confused even if I hadn't. ... show more

    • Overall, very good material for self-studying.
I decided to use genki to learn Japanese by myself, since this series is well known, and the class pace is too slow (only 2 hrs a week, far from enough to consolidate your skills in my opinion.) Here's how I used Genki I and II for self-study: 1. Go over all the vocabs and grammars, review them on time ( by reading the 読み書き, and doing the work book exercise.) 2. For each lesson, when you are familiar with 75% of the vocabs and grammars. Do dictation of the dialogue. 3. Do extensive reading. ( I highly recommend Japanese Grader Reader set: Japanese Graded Readers: Level 0 Vol 2 (Japanese Graded Readers) ) Here's the pros and cons: Pros: 1. Comprehensive skill developments (listening, reading, writing, speaking). It's not that nerdy style where it digs into the very details of the grammars at the beginning. 2. Shadowing. For the dialogues and the exercise, it would stop for a while for you to repeat or make sentences. 3. The later lessons would repeat what you have learned in the previous lessons as to help you review, so you don't need to go over the previous too frequently as you move on. For this reason, I suggest the users not stick to one page if confused, just move on. Cons: 1. Some English translations are not very accurate, though it won't affect too much of understanding. 2. Isolates the new words and grammars in different lessons. Since many Japanese words have the same origin, or have similar meaning, it should have shown more connections among the words. (e.g.1. umi means the sea, mizu means water, and mizuumi means lake, which is literally sea + water, but it doesn't mention that; 2. Grammar like なければいけません, which means "you have to do", appearing in lesson 12, is actually using grammars in the genki II book, so it should be put in genki II) 3. (Not a big deal at all) I think "メアリーさんは日本語を勉強します" shows up too frequently in the book :) 4. There's NO high/low pitch on the words, so I have to listen to the MP3 to know the pitch. Pitch is important because pitch can determine the meaning. (切る/着る、橋/箸 for example.) After finishing the first Genki, you are in N5, after the second one, N4 shouldn't be a problem. ... show more

I'm very happy with this product; it arrived in 3 days (much earlier than expected) and to me it seemed as good as new. Out of all the pages I only found small pencil writings in one page but it doesn't bother me at all. The other pages are unanswered and look perfect, plus, this book had the CD included. In the end with taxes, shipping and everything it was around $40 bucks and I think it was very well worth it. When buying used from other sellers make sure you read the description of each one (I bought this copy from "frommyshelf" Eri Banno). As for the book itself, I'm using it along with two tutors; I'm happy with the pace of things and of the things we are learning. I would recommend you get the hang of a few basics such as hiragana/katakana before deciding to self-study with this book. Also, complement your studies with Anki/quizlet pre-made decks, kana review with realkana.com, kanji recognition with kanji tree, Jisho dictionary for meaning or stroke review, etc. So you get the most out of your studies. ... show more
