  • Horrible
I absolutely love bourbon and after some recent health issues I started looking for an alternative. Thought I would give this a try. Absolute disappointment, it is almost like they were not even trying just prying on people to purchase knowing nobody would buy a second bottle. When I say this is bad, I mean there is no connection to a bourbon flavor! Waste of money and time!. ... show more

  • Very good product.
I like this better than Lyre's American Malt or Kentucky 76. Those other products just taste like raisins or tea. This makes a great whiskey sour. If you're not in a big hurry to give up alcohol, try this half and half with real in a whiskey sour with a real egg white and tell me you're not a believer. Gradually you can get your alcohol consumption down using a product like this, but using some real whiskey is the key. ... show more

  • WHY IS IT THICK!?!?!?
Been drinking Free Spirits products for a couple years now. Looked for an alternative to alcohol during COVID just to cut back a little since consumption increased. Had I reviewed the Spirit of Bourbon a year ago the rating would have been at least 3 stars. The last time I ordered the consistency was thin, like water and while the flavor, to a bourbon drinker isn't close as mentioned the purpose was to avoid 12 steps, it served a purpose and I was fine with it. Rate this as if its a bourbon and forget it, stars should not be involved but if you can separate yourself from the fact that this is at least an alternative and was a rather pleasant way to enjoy something flavorful that isn't a soft drink with tons of sugar or a boring flavored seltzer you can get past it and drink it straight. In a mocktail it's fine. Now for whatever reason and without warning the recipe changed, it's thick, as in viscous, very bizzare, not at all appealing when drinking it straight and can't imagine what it would do to a cocktail. NOT A FAN!! If anyone from Free Spirits is looking at these, please, PLEASE! DO NOT DO WHATEVER YOU DID TO THE BOURBON TO THE GIN! ... show more

  • No, it doesn't taste like Bourbon. But....
I bought this as an alternative to alcohol earlier this year. I'm not a tea totaler but if there is something that can replicate bourbon I'm interested in it. This is not it. Frankly I haven't found any whisky alternative that tastes even remotely like whisky. So if you are actually looking for a replacement, well, you won't find it here. But it does have a mildly nutty and somewhat spicey taste. On its own it is a bit overwhelming but, surprisingly, if it is added to a bit of real bourbon it makes for a pretty nice cocktail. I'm sure this is defeating the purpose of a non alcoholic spirit but it can cut back substantially on the amount of real liquor that you probably would use in a drink. I actually like the combo, with a bit of orange bitters added . It makes for a nice, after dinner cocktail. Somewhat weird but I like it this way and am ordering another bottle. ... show more

  • Not any sort of bourbon replacement
I tried it neat and although I completely expected it to not replace bourbon neat, it’s got a spice to it to create a false burn. I also used this to make an old fashioned. I doubled the bitters and skipped the simple (this is already sweet). It’s ok but not good. I’ll continue to play with it but wish there were better recipes for it. ... show more

  • Not bourbon taste at all, more like a spiced rum
Top tips on this: 1. Don't drink it by itself and expect a bourbon flavour. 2. Mix in a quarter to a third water to open it up a bit, takes dials back some of the hotness and spice. 3. Not sure why this isn't marketed as a spiced rum, it has more of those notes than anything close to actual bourbon. Reminiscent of a Rum Manhattan with the Martini & Rossi Vibrante and some quality bitters. Honestly, I'm almost done with trying all this fake booze stuff, exactly mimicking the taste of the real thing doesn't appear to be easy or even possible by us mere mortals. When I go out these days I've developed a taste for sparkling water and a healthy dash of Angostura as even the diviest of places have this on hand. Fancier places will have higher end soda, maybe one of those fancy Japanese highball soda machines, and more interesting bitters. When I drink it I know what I'm getting and not missing the hell out of a really decent Manhattan or Old Fashioned. ... show more

  • Scratches the Itch
No, it’s not bourbon. It’s not as mellow or warm. And it doesn’t have the buzz. Of course it’s not the same! But it doesn’t need to be. For me, it fills a rocks glass and offers a bit of heat (jalapeño?), some spicy, citrusy complexity, without any cloying sweetness. I actually quite like it. I like it even better mixed with another non-alcoholic tipple (The Pathfinder), and together they are saving me calories and liver damage in a satisfying evening wind down. … I can even go back for guilt free seconds. ... show more

  • Looks like bourbon.....
And that's where the similarity ends. I have no idea what I'm going to do with this terrible stuff. I have some non-alcoholic gin from another company that is only reminiscent of gin, but it still has a pleasant flavor and I can enjoy it with lime and some soda. Not this stuff.
