  • Amazing Gray Coverage and Rich, Natural Looking Brown
Color: Caffe Americano 4.0 - with GRAY COVERAGE
I have been professionally dying my hair for the past 15 years. I few years ago I dabbled with homemade henna and I loved the rich, natural red color but application was a mess. I have never applied any type of box dye to my hair since I have always been scared of poor results or damage to my curly hair. My natural color is a rich, chocolate brown and it’s mid-back length and very curly, but can also be fragile and prone to frizz when I use the wrong products. Since I turned 30, I’ve been dealing with greys and they are very obvious on my dark hair. Unfortunately, it’s way too expensive and time consuming to make it to the salon every month for root touch ups and gloss treatments so I decided to look into a good DIY product. Although my hair is now back to my natural dark brown color, it is not virgin hair since it was previously blonde and then red. I am so glad that I stumble upon this brand and bought this kit. I only needed one box to cover my roots completely and apply the rest to refresh all the way down to my ends. The kit is easy to mix into the bottle provided and applies without making a mess. I like the slightly thin consistency (think a lighter conditioner) since it made application unto my curly hair a breeze. I started by washing my hair with a clarifying and chelating shampoo to remove all build up, then I towel dried and blow dried my hair until it was completely dry with no conditioner or other product applied. I sectioned my hair into 4 pieces and applied liberally to my roots, while massaging well into my scalp to get all the baby grey hairs. I set the timer for 15 minutes after I finished the second section, once the timer was up I then applied the remaining dye to my lengths and reset the timer for another 15 minutes. I massaged the dye well into my strands and brushed it in, gathered my hair into two space buns with a shower cap over it to finish processing. Lastly, I rinsed my hair out completely under tepid water and washed once with color-safe shampoo to remove all the excess dye. I loved that it was virtually scent free, no harsh ammonia or perfumes and my scalp did no itch like it does at the salon. The immediate results were amazing and the color was super rich, true to my natural color and covered all my grays! I finished my coloring treatment with a pH balancing gloss to seal my hair cuticles and it looks better than when I go to the salon. I had minimal hair fallout and breakage, my curls feel healthy and nourished. It also neutralized all the brassiness from the red undertones and previous auburn dye in my hair, it looks like a true espresso / deep chocolate brown on me. I believe any bad reviews probably stem from choosing the wrong shade for your base / undertones and application. This should definitely be applied on squeaky clean, dry hair with no products or build up. I will edit once the color fades to report how longs it lasted. ... show more

  • Get another brand
Color: Pearly Pastel 9.12
I was so excited to try this brand and the pearl color. It being vegan and having a lot of shades I was interested in, I thought I'd be a repeat customer. Instead, it smelled awful, the developer bottle top wouldn't break off so I had to cut it (which wasn't great), it was watery with no applicator nor post conditioner, damaged my hair, and left it with an awful green tint. I've dyed my hair with box dyes (temp and perm) almost monthly for over 15yrs and this is top 3 worst dye jobs I've ever had... ... show more

  • Better than expected!
Color: Cappuccino 7.35
I mix this with the portobello for gray coverage. I can't believe how well it works - color covers my grays for 3+ weeks and it doesn't have any of my contact allergens. I do leave it on for longer than indicated (usually 45 minutes). So glad to finally have an alternative that isn't full of fragrance! ... show more

  • Pretty good Demi dye
Color: Chocoholic 6.35
I used the warm brown color to cover old highlights. I have used different kinds of Demi and Semi dye before including this brand. It covers well and gives my natural light brunette a little something when I want a slight change. It is Demi and will not cover grays. I would remove a star though because there was a smell like old cigarettes with this dye that I have not ever smelt with a hair dye before. I maybe would pass this one up and use a different brand next time for that reason. ... show more

  • Gentle and easy to use hair dye
Color: Cappuccino 7.35
I was recommended this brand by my hairstylist and I will be ordering this again. I ordered it in color cappuccino for my pre lightened hair. It is very easy to use as long as you follow the instructions included. The box of dye came with two bottles: developer and color. It also included instructions and a pair of gloves. You can mix the color in the bottle that’s included or I decided to mix mine in my special bowl for hair dye (non metal) and use a brush to apply. You have to apply the color on clean towel dried hair, then let it develop on your hair for up to 30 minutes, depending on desired results. In my case, I wanted to go as dark as I could since i had to even out my color and so i kept it on for 30 minutes. I started out with level 9-10 blonde and it turned out to be level 5-6 brown, which i was happy with, knowing it is a demi-permanent hair color, so eventually it will wash out. It’s been a little over a week and it has washed out to level 7 ( i call it milk tea color) and I’m really happy how it looks. My hair looks shiny, healthy and most importantly like i just dyed it that caramel/milk tea color. Something for you to keep in mind is that I wash my hair every other day or every day, and I do not use color safe shampoo/conditioner or color depositing masks/conditioner to keep the color going. My goal was to achieve the wow effect from going from blonde to brown and have it slowly wash out to the point that i can get my blonde back if I decide to! ... show more

  • Portobello- it’s just okay.
Color: Portobello 7.0 - with GRAY COVERAGE
It is not great with the grays at the top of my head. They are just as visible as before. I also think the color is a tad bit too red for dark blonde. I’m not seeing much of the beige cool blonde on the package. Then again, it’s not the worst box dye I’ve used. Not a complete nightmare color, not too red, not unexpectedly dark. Seems gentle, and I suspect the slight red is fixable with purple hair mask. So overall, my gripe is with the grays that it’s supposed to deal with but didn’t. ... show more
