  • UPDATE: 5 Stars with New Firmware (OLD: Disappointingly Loud, Only Good for Some Purposes)
Style: RIVER Pro
UPDATE: I persevered with getting my mobile app to connect to the EcoFlow in order to give this thing a fair shake. I'm glad I did, because the newest firmware update solves almost all of my gripes. The only gripe I have now is the placement of the flashlight. The firmware solves most of the fan problems, having the fan only kick on when the device is hot. There is a "Quiet Charge" mode that reduces the charging wattage to 100W to prevent the fan from turning on. That means that it will not kick on when the battery is plugged in and fully charged (or charging slowly); it will not kick on when AC power is on without a device connected. Additionally, the app allows you to shut off the annoying beeping noise every time a button is pressed. Now, with the app working properly, the beeping shut off, and the fans silenced when not truly needed, this device is truly 4.75 stars (-0.25 for the placement of the light), and it should serve me well for camping and off-grid telework. PREVIOUS: I had incredibly high hopes for this generator based on all of the rave reviews, and I was so excited to receive the package in the mail. However, I now question the integrity of many of those reviews, as I'm quite disappointed. Perhaps it is asking too much to have quiet fans. I purchased this as a multipurpose battery: camping, road travel and outdoor telework, portable supply for light farm use, outdoor movie night, and backup for power outages. After just 24 hours with this thing, I can tell you that it is only suitable for light farm use and power backup. The number one reason for this is the obnoxiously loud fans. Do not believe the reviews that say the fans aren't loud; they are loud. They are loud enough that if you have this thing in your tent, they will drive you crazy. They are loud enough that if you have it in your car, they will drive you crazy. If you and your significant other are cuddling in a tent watching a movie on your laptop, the fans will keep you from enjoying the movie. The fans are on whenever the battery is charging or connected for charging (i.e. even at 100% charge, the fans will run). The fans are on whenever you have AC power turned on, even if you aren't drawing power. I connected a 7w light, and the fans were running. I disconnected the light, now drawing 0 watts, and the fans stayed on. My wife, sitting 20 feet away two rooms over could hear the fans and said, "SEND IT BACK!" Enough with the fans. The other noise is an obnoxiously loud beep whenever a button is pushed: the flashlight button, the power button, the AC button, etc. There should be a way to adjust the volume, because again, if we're camping or in the car, this beep is irritatingly loud. On to the UI/UX: First, I find it incredibly annoying that some options can only be set through an app that connects via WiFi. Bluetooth would have been must better, but better yet would be an on-screen menu. The app itself looks pretty, but does not function very well. The company seems more concerned about cosmetics than functionality. To be honest, I never fully got the app set up because, although I went through the registration process, WiFi setup process, etc, the device itself had trouble connecting to my home network. This would cause the app to not save the device which I had just added, so I was caught in an endless loop. I gave up. The flashlight: My final gripe is the placement of the flashlight. Why in the heck is it placed on the front? It makes it totally unusable. At the very least they could have placed it on the back side, where it would shine in the opposite direction of the status screen as to not blind you at night. Even better though, they could have placed it like the Jackery where it is on the end; with this direction, it then acts like a flashlight as you are walking with it along a path at night. Instead, it is nearly impossible to use it for another other than an emergency light. One last negative note: While this can power devices up to 1200w (temporary surge to 1800w), it comes with a catch. It is best done for things with heating elements which don't require high voltage because it accomplishes the additional wattage by reducing the voltage. This is not a dealbreaker, but it is something that i don't feel is very clearly advertised. The good: It's certainly not all bad, especially if you don't want to use this thing close to you and expect quiet operation. The good: * First, the 700w+ of power is enough to keep all of our devices charged overnight while waiting for the sun to come up the next day to recharge from our solar panel. *I like the fact that the solar is nearly plug and play. I connected the EcoFlow (using the included cable) directly to my $90 Renogy 100w panel, and it got to work charging, even displaying the amount of watts it was generating. I found this to be outstanding. I have not tried to charge from my car yet, but included was a cigarette lighter charging cable. * The weight and size are excellent for all-around use. * The color/design is very nice and aesthetically pleasing. * Three AC power ports is nice, when other brands only offer 1 or 2. * The packaging of the device was outstanding. * Charging (from AC) is super fast. It sustained about 600w draw or so to charge up in just over an hour. Overall, I'm giving the device 3 stars and we are possibly sending it back to purchase a Jackery (also has fans, but much cheaper) or some other custom solution. If we needed/wanted this device only for power backup and working around the farm (i.e. powering tools far from an outlet), this would be an excellent device for us. However, we primarily planned to use it for camping, road trips, and teleworking out of our SUV...for that, the fans are simply unbearable. We would rather save $130 and get the Jackery, despite slightly lower output. Apparently the Jackery also has a fan that is on when the AC power inverter is turned on, but I would rather save the money. ... show more

  • Made in China, does not work. UPDATE...UPDATE...UPDATE....
Style: RIVER Pro Extra Battery
EcoFlo products are great except for one major flaw. Anything requiring an expansion requires applications and/or firmware updates. If you happen to be off grid there is no way that you can just connect this extra battery to the river pro without some sort of internet or wi-fi.......WHY????? The unit I received could not be recognized after going through all the hassles of using wi-fi or the internet. Why must I use my cell-phone or computer to change settings which should be allowed on the hardware. All this useless technology could be better used in making all ecoflow products more efficient . I buy this products for use in camping or when the grid goes down. How am I going to be able to use it when I have no power or internet or wi-fi because the grid is down. Very smart ecoflow. When I contacted EcoFlow about the issue with my expansion battery, this is the response I received from them. " Since the extra batteries were made in China and had been shipped to our warehouse in the USA before an updated firmware for the extra battery was released, there is a possibility for it to not be able to be recognized by the River Pro." Why would they release it if they know this is the problem. The hassles they put me through in just trying to send it back and receive my refund is just not worth buying any future products from them, especially with the hassles of getting the apps to change settings and being on the internet or wi-fi. UPDATE 18 JAN 2023 I am updating and changing my one star rating to 5 stars for the following reason. First of all, ECOFlow customer service particularly Shirley, their representative was very very verrrrry persistent in trying to make things right for me, despite my anger issues I had with the company she never gave up on me. She convinced me to give them a second chance and guaranteed that she would send me a working extra battery. I received it four weeks ago and have been testing it non stop since. The moment I connected it to my river pro it recognized the battery and balanced itself automatically. I have been running a dometic cfx3 45 liter on 12V and every 5 days I charge both of them when they reach about 25% capacity. I have used it with the inverter also and runs flawlessly. I have used the river pro without the extra battery and when it reaches about 30% I disconnect it from the dometic, and shut all the power off and hook up the extra battery than turn the power on and connect my dometic fridge and my river pro will balance itself and reads 75% charge and I can continue to use it longer without charging it or using my solar panels. Shirley from Customer Service is the consummate professional convincing me that Ecoflow will stand by their product. I want to make one thing clear. Shirley's hard work and dedication to ECOFlow and sincere approach to my disgusting experience at the beginning with the extra battery and her dedication to make things right for me is what earned the company a 5 star rating. SHIRLEY, THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH, for making things right. ... show more
