Pioneering pop/jazz band Steely Dan, formed by Donald Fagen and Walter Becker in the early seventies, had already secured five Top 40 albums before the release of Aja in 1977. Aja, however, was to prove to be the biggest selling album of Steely Dan's illustrious career, reaching No. 3 on the Billboard chart and spending a year in the Top 40. Becker and Fagen, renowned for their relentless perfectionism in the recording studio, recall the history of an album that was a year in the making, but rewarded with a Grammy Award and three hit singles. Steely Dan's Aja has proven to be one of the most outstanding jazz-rock albums in the history of popular music and now its story is told in this fascinating documentary. 60 minutes.

Let me first off explain that I work in a major recording studio in Seattle and in watching this DVD I thought it was an honest portrayal of the crudity of putting together a record only to watch it take on a life of it's own in the studio. The camera work was crued...but then again it was probably an extemporaneous interview recorded by a camcorder after a session. The tracking of the cut starts like that, crued and extemporaneous, it is then fine tuned in the studio as each piece is laid down and perfected. Aja was perfect. And as a studio person I was absolutely refreshed to see the "mundane and human side" of making a record rock. After all, isnt that what viewers want in the first place? ...they cant be there to watch it transform from reference tracks to demo tracks to a fully mastered project. This may sound unexciting...but it IS exciting to those of us who have the priviledge of making it ROCK. ... show more

Great for Steely Dan fans!
I was 15 years old when this album came out. I was a drummer in the Jazz and Concert band and remember hearing SD on the radio and thinking "this sounds really different from anything else on the radio". This video explained a lot of what I was hearing. The PEG guitar solo is infamous with studio players. Great to hear the alternate guitar solos from PEG and you really do hear (and see) that they picked the right one. A must have for SD enthusiast enthusiast.... ... show more

Almost perfect....
Great insights into the music, the people involved, the production of the record, the arranging of the songs, two recent in-studio live instrumental performances ("Peg," "Josie")...but no discussion whatsoever of one of the album's best pieces, "I Got the News" (though they play a snippet of it in the closing credits). One strange thing is that the guitarist sitting in for the new studio session goes uncredited! He's a fine player, though, as one would expect. This is a tremendous contribution to the world of rock documentaries and another stunning entry in the Classic Albums series (as is the recent disc on U2's *The Joshua Tree*). ... show more
