  • One wrong part can derail a whole design.
The media could not be loaded. This toy is a prime example of the saying that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Most of this locomotive shows Brio's usual quality and design work. The motor is strong enough to pull several cars even up bridges, the wheels have small rubber treads, the body features a weight over the driving wheels for extra traction - exactly what you should expect from Brio. And then there's the switch mechanism. Rather than using an on-off switch mounted on top the body, Brio chose to have the front axle operate the switch when you push down on the locomotive. The axle pushes on a plastic lever, which pushes on a small surface-mount microswitch on a circuit board. Brio did not put in a return spring, an additional stop to prevent the switch from being pushed too hard, or apparently any additional thought into the matter. 100% of the load path goes through the microswitch and PCB. It's a control and a suspension mechanism all in one! If you're going to rely on that one microswitch so much. you'd better hold your suppliers' feet to the fire to make sure they deliver a top notch product, or even manufacture the component in house. But no - this looks like it's some off the shelf commodity product that was never intended to be pushed that hard. And it routinely jams in the off position. I've had to take apart the locomotive a half-dozen times to get it working again, only to have the switch get stuck after my son plays with this a half an hour. And about that taking the locomotive apart. Brio's used tamper-resistant triangular screws to try to keep you out of the mechanism. (Search for triangular screwdrivers - there are several cheap ones on Amazon that will work great for the tamperer who does not want resistance.) Brio, if you're going to use tamper resistance screws, please do not put them on tampering-required products. ... show more
