  • Batgirl and Robin: Year One
I've read this before, but trying to find one or the other books is nearly impossible anymore now and days. My only small nitpick if there was one was that they had the pages that were glossy then the old paper ones that I remember - at least from Robin Year One, but that was not much of a complaint. Dick Gtayson's origin story has been told 100 plus times since he debuted in the early 40s. So has Barbara Gordon's. Though Robin: Year One doesn't retell Dick's story like Batgirl: Year One does Barbara's, it does tell has how Dick's life as Robin went the first year he was a protege under Batman. The New 52 aside - which would really make this series non-canon something to me is sad because this is some of the best Bat-comics that were written - at least from Chuck Dixon anyways. But fans of the old comics, or ones even if they never picked up a comic book could easily start reading this comic and not have to wonder what comics they'd have to read to know what happened prior. If one wanted to know more on what happened to Robin before Year One started - or even any mentions to Barbara Gordon before she became Batgirl, then yes I would read anything that was from the time period. Would I recommend this comic to someone? Most definitely. ... show more

  • Turn this into a movie, DC!
This book could easily form the basis for a set of new Batman movies or a new animated series. I have been dying to see some Batman movies that are more true to the comics and include the extended family. How have WB not capitalized on these characters yet? It's crazy. They're having such a hard time trying to compete with Marvel's dominance and get their cinematic universe established. It's almost painful to watch, how bad of a job they're doing. Anyway, the book's great. It reads like a slightly more harder-edged season of the 90s animated series. I didn't much care for the art at first but it grew on me. I felt that way about Bruce Timm's art from the series as well. It's very stylized but it suits the book. So there you have it. Buy this book. It's good. And while you're at it maybe tweet some tweets or send some emails to WB (who though? That's the problem. They have no Kevin Feige or Joe Quesada type people) if you want to see a Gotham Knights style Batman trilogy or some better animated movies 'cause those have been sucking hard for a while now. ... show more

  • Sidekicks Begin
2 Surprisingly good tales. Everybody tries to create a Year One story as compelling as Frank Miller. While these stories are not on that level. They do grab your attention as the dive deeper into the make-up of each character. Robin's story is a slightly better, but I found one aspect a little too much on the nose. Each Robin should have his own challenge without copying anothers. Batgirl is pretty straightforward. I liked seeing how both her and Gordon try to get around each other. Bonus story, I really liked how Firefly and Moth started out. ... show more

  • Great Origin Stories
If you want to know the origin and the beginning of their crime fighting this is a great choice and more cost effective than buying batgirl year one and robin year one separately. I enjoyed the stories a lot, minor flaw is the curisve writing in some of the pages, but I liked the stories too much to lower the score for this. ... show more

  • Delight
Chuck Dixon is awesome. End of story. No seriously - I've been starved for content and this is exactly what I needed. If you're just getting into comics, I'd recommend this to anyone in a heartbeat. Easily one of my favorites.

  • There's apparently more Year One books outside of Batman
Okay, I get it. Batgirl and Robin are not really that far removed from Batman but it was an awesome delight to see recommendations pop up for a Year One book that wasn't Batman. Seeing a early tale about the early days of Dick Grayson and Barbara Gordon's mission for justice was exciting. These 2 stories really flowed together to make this book. Though it may not be the official canon for these characters (or maybe it is - its always impossible to tell with comics), it's worth a place in every Batman fan's shelf. ... show more

  • In the beginning... there was 1, then 2, then 3
If you are a fan of Barbara Gordon as Batgirl, this is a must read. This is the origin story for her, and it is a very good story, well written, and ties in well with Robin's, and how she became a part of the batfamily. Robin's story is excellent too. I was never a fan of Robin until i read this book! Its the early days of Dick Grayson as Robin, but not the goofy 60s Robin, it fits in very well with modern day Batman and Robin, and the end of Dark Victory flows right into this year one book. ... show more

  • Must have for Batman fans!
I'm a huge Batman fan, and knew this book would be great, but I didn't know how much I'd really love it. Amazing stories, great consistent art, and top notch paper quality. If you read 'Dark Victory', you already know Robin's origin, this is a great follow up to that. Both his, and Batgirl's stories are packed into this nice sized book. Arrived from Amazon in perfect condition, no bending, creasing, or damage of any kind to speak of. Highly recommend! ... show more
