I've been full time in EMS for 15 years, and in that time I've tried pretty much all of the major manufacturers, and several smaller ones. Bates, Thorogood, UA, and a host of others. I found most of them to be pretty good with the exception of the Thorogood. Those were pure garbage. The 5.11s are the only ones that stand out in a good way. The first thing you notice when you put them on is that they are much lighter than most boots. It's almost to the point that I would be worried about the durability if I didn't know better. The comfort is the best part. I love these things. 5.11s on day one are more comfortable than most boots after three months of break in. The sole is decent, but not great. With pretty much any boot I recommend getting a good sole insert. It will make a huge difference no matter what brand. The durability is surprising to say the least. I'm wearing my third pair now, and the first two lasted two years and 2.5 years. That's with full time every day wear. Most brands lasted one. The Bates lasted two, but they were never as comfortable. The grip is excellent in any weather. I live in upstate NY so we get it all, from ice to snow to flooding rain any anything else you can think of. These get a better than average grip on anything. So, these boots are the most comfortable, the most durable, and among the lightest boots I've ever worn. After about five years of wearing them I love them as much as I did on day one. Take my advice. Don't try to save $20 or $30 on a cheaper pair. It isn't worth it. These are, hands down, the boots to get. A good sole will make them even better. ... show more

    • Disappointing quality leather

I'm old school, I like a nice spit shine on my work boots. The quality of the leather leaves a lot to be desired, wrinkles that will not come out and will therefore not shine are prevalent. Does this detract from the functionality of the boot, no but aesthetically, yes. The boots fit well but it's like having a car that you can't wax properly because it will not shine when you are done. I love these boots. 2nd pair. First pair are still kickin after 6 years. I ordered 1.5 x bigger because I knew the first pair had to be a 12. I wear a 10.5. So, just keep that in mind.

    • you get what you pay for
first, took forever to get delivered. only reason i couldn’t buy them at a 5.11 store is cause they don’t stock larger sizes. second, i agree with some of the other reviewers - the topmost lace eyelets should have been QD lacers. impossible to get on and off without unlacing, so the zipper is virtually useless. third, their ‘comfort tech’ insoles are a joke. a quarter inch all around and absolutely zero arch support. fourth, wore them for 30 minutes and the leather is already seamed. fifth, too much space above toes. and every time i took a step my toenails met the hard inner surface. i don’t understand how anyone can wear these every day for 8 hours without killing their feet. and before you ask, yes i had proper socks on. good thing i got them only for range time. i doubt they would hold up as work boots or hikers. should have gone with Danners ... show more

    • This is a well made boot with one fatal flaw

I wear these boots for patrol. 8-12 hour shifts, they are comfortable enough and break in quickly. One month to the day after I bought the first pair, a zipper tooth broke, disabling the boots. I have had zippers fail me in the past from other patrol boots, especially the ones with bigger teeth like these. So, I have gotten in the habit of babying the zipper every time I put them on. Avoiding high torque pulls from the side and using a finger to help guide the zipper over the weather flap for example. Usually this sort of caution helps a pair of patrol boots last upwards of 2-3 years, or until the tread wears down. That's why I was.... surprised that this pair didn't last a month. To amazon's credit they replaced the pair no questions asked and I will give this second pair a fair shot and see if the zipper failure was a fluke or something more common that the manufacturer may need to consider when they redesign this boot. ... show more

I bought these for my brother who is in law enforcement. He is normally a 10.5 M so we bought the size 11 just for the extra toe room. He couldn't get his foot in. So we returned that pair and got an 11.5 wide and still the booth was too small and narrow. I turned the shoes over to look at the sole and I kid you not it looked like a regular width. So I checked the box to make sure the correct size and width. It said 11.5 W but these boots fit so small and tight I am wondering if that "W" was for women and not Wide. Of course, my brother wants to try the 12W and this boot only comes in 12M. A bit disappointing that this boot runs so small. i Wear a 10.5 and for this boot I purchased a 10.5 wide for some extra space in the toe box. My big toe was touching the front end of the toe box and it was so uncomfortable. I probably should have got an 11. The boot itself was light and polishable. The half zip was a little hard to get in for some reason. I figured it would be easier to slide on with the zipper. If it was a bit bigger I would have kept them. Not bad if they fit. ... show more

Apparently manufactured in Bangladesh, these boots are advertised as 10.5 Wide Boots. What was received was a NARROW, and approximately a 10 using a US shoe scale. I could not even get my foot into the boot. I have worn 10.5 Wide boots for the past 20 years; I know how they are supposed to fit; and these do not. They are certainly NOT what I expected from 5.11 (Returned for a full refund; thanks Amazon... But this is becoming a repeating habit...) From now on, I will purchase shoes from stores, NOT online.
