  • Exceeds expectations
Style: 12500 Watts - Gas Only
I bought this WGen9500 generator on 1 Oct 2021 through Amazon. I needed power backup in case of power outages and needed something large enough to run a water well pump. This was to replace a smaller generator I had that didn't have the power necessary when running at my altitude of 7400' here in Colorado. The 9500 powers everything I need now. Amazon delivered the generator to my doorstep and assembly/setup was easy. Tipping the unit up on its end made installation of wheels and feet easy. I used the supplied angled funnel to add the provided oil, a 1.1 qt. bottle, which is the stated oil capacity of the engine. However, when the whole bottle of oil was added the dipstick still showed at the very minimum level. Just to be on the safe side I added more 10W30 oil to bring it up to the full mark. I made sure the unit was level when I did this. Note: I read an earlier review of this unit, at Amazon, where the reviewer said he "only put a little gas and oil in " and said it would start but wouldn't stay running. He then added "about a half gallon of gas, filled the oil chamber 1/2 full" and got it running. If his account is accurate I'm guessing he was trying to run it without proper oil level. It is shipped without any oil in the engine. It has a low oil shutoff function to prevent engine damage. With enough fuel and oil it started right up. I'll mention here that I only use non-ethanol fuel in this. I highly recommend this, if you can find it, if the unit will be setting idle for extended periods of time. For summer time I have the gas tank drained and the carb run dry with a 5 gallon jug of stabilized non-e gas ready. In winter I have the unit's tank filled up so I don't have to deal with fueling it up when it's like, 10 degrees outside. The reason for non-e gas is that the ethanol will absorb moisture from the air over time, especially in humid climates. This moisture will cause corrosion of the metal alloys in the carb over a relatively short period of time. Don't blame the generator if it won't run due to a corroded carb. When you need it, it absolutely HAS to start. I have the unit running the whole house through a transfer switch and turn off circuit breakers to high draw items that I won't need during the outage, just to avoid any possible overloading of the unit. I started the unit manually, then with the push button and then the remote fob. All worked as advertised. The remote fob is pretty cool and works well, but the manual pull start is important too in case the battery is dead. There is a trickle charger provided to prevent this, but it isn't meant to be used continuously. It will over charge the battery. My only gripe, and it is a minor one, has to do with some cosmetic damage. Although not visible on the cardboard box, one section of rectangle tubing was bent, probably from an impact to the side. Since it is a welded-in part of the whole frame, it isn't worth trying to fix. Also, it appears something poked through the box and peeled back part of a decal. Again, not worth the effort. It is somewhat noisy, but with nothing to compare it to probably no louder than others. It is portable with the wheels, but is quite heavy, but probably no heavier than similar units. With the flip up handle is is very maneuverable. ... show more

  • Build quality seems quite good much better than am older Generac I had for many years gave to my son
Style: 12500 Watts - Gas Only
I ordered a one with packaging damage and since it is so heavy and hard to handle basically a forklift item around 200lbs I expected some minor damage as was the case (shipping box was shredded & was not crated with any wood or Styrofoam and acceptable based on what I bought and price which was all easily tweaked to make it look new. Wheels were solid (I hated by pneumatic old Generac ones) & not hard to assemble (I greased the shafts but the wheels came with pairs of sealed ball bearings a big plus) and came with a spark plug tools and combo wrench for the shock mount feet bracket bolts which I Loctited. Simply filling the crankcase with 1.16 qts of 10W-30 oil and plugging the easy harness for the battery together was quick. I like the main breaker and logical order of the controls. Battery 2A charger was included and works. The feature of the push button electronic start (has pull start also) and start/ stop FOB is a gigantic upgrade from the very old Generac I had (that was only pull start and had engine common issue of valve spring retainers (replaced with automotive style thick solid stamped steep cup style cracked as it got heated up running full blast building fencing idle CTRL bypassed and idle control burnt out which was $$, idle solenoid was weak and vibrated so had was not strong enough to hold idle). Anyway this Westinghouse gas only model is made (assembled?) in USA Alabama IIRC which was a but plus. Gas tank capacity is good @ 6.6 Gal IIRC. The large fuel filler cap and screen and tank guage is large and much better than my very old one integrated with the cheesy cap. ... show more

  • Peace of Mind
Style: 12500 Watts - Gas Only
After losing power a few times over the years following tropical storms, nor'easters, and ice storms, I finally protected myself against losing many hundreds of dollars in food and sleeping in the cold. I hired an electrician to install a "lock-out breaker" which obviates the need for a transfer switch and the wiring of specific circuits this common approach entails. With this lock-out breaker, I can run the entire house or select specific circuits to remain powered while on the generator as it is controlled through my main circuit panel. I purchased this generator as my back-up system to connect to the house. When I received it, I spent about 90 minutes attaching the feet and wheels, adding oil and gas, and testing it on the house. Overall, I'm thrilled, so there aren't any real negatives, but here are my good and not-quite-as-good observations: Good: 1) Initial assembly is very straightforward and limited to tightening two screws to attach the feet and installing the axles and wheels. I found the axles to be a tight fit, but a little WD-40 enabled them to slide in with a gentle tap of a hammer. 2) Start-up instructions were very clear, and a container of oil was included to get the unit running quickly once I added my gas. 3) When I connected it to the house, everything worked fine. I turned on various lights, had two refrigerators running, at least three computers and a television. Power output was steady and strong. Not-quite-as-good 1) While there isn't an ear-splitting noise from the machine, it's still very noticeable inside the house with gas-insulated double windows closed and the unit placed 25' feet from the house. The noise outside is about as loud as a riding lawn mower. I imagine that after running it for hours, it may become bothersome, but it's a welcome trade-off to not having power. 2) The unit is heavy. Adding a full tank of fuel makes it heavier still. Despite this, it's still maneuverable using the retractable handle and its heavy-duty wheels. Still, make sure that you store it on ground level because you're not lifting or carrying this up or down steps. Not even with two people. The closer you can keep it to the run location, the better. 3) The placement of the 50-amp outlet - the one used to connect to the house - is placed too close to one of the wheels. This causes a little difficulty when the super heavy-duty cord is plugged in to connect to the house. It just took a little more effort and grunting to get it connected than it should have taken, but as you can see from the picture, it works. Another style of cord where the cord itself comes straight out of the plug rather than at a 90-degree angle like mine would not have this problem. All in all, I'm delighted with the unit. While I'm not looking forward to losing power any time soon, I know that should it happen, I'm well prepared to ride out the time required to restore power from the grid. ... show more
