Top Amazon Reviews

🚀 Abunda's Overview

This is our summary and key points to consider based on customer reviews.

The WD Red NAS Hard Drive is highly praised for its extensive lifespan and exceptional reliability. Designed for continuous operation, these drives measure up to 4 TB in storage and are reported to install seamlessly into NAS devices. Some users remark that they have used them round-the-clock for over five years without issues. However, one criticism is that the 1-4TB sizes are SMR drives, which some feel is less suitable for RAID systems.

Pros

  • 👍 Exceptional longevity and reliability
  • 💾 High storage capacity (up to 4TB)
  • 🔄 Operates continuously without issue
  • 🔌 Installs seamlessly into NAS devices

Cons

  • 🔻 Low suitability for RAID systems due to being SMR drives
  • 👎 Some users feel that their life-span is shorter than they should be

Should I Buy It?

Yes, the WD Red NAS Hard Drive is highly recommended for its impressive durability, seamless installation, and extensive storage capacity. Those planning to use them in a RAID system, however, should note they are SMR and not CMR drives.

  • Old reliable
Capacity: 4TB Style: Red Pattern Name: Hard Drive
WD Red is a workhorse for NAS devices. I bought a PR2100 NAS device five years ago preloaded with WD Red 2 TB drives. Only now has one of the drives started to report errors, but still hasn't failed. This is running the drives 24x7 for five years. I bought these 4 TB units to replace the older drives, the procedure was painless, and now I have double the space for five more years. I may repurpose the error-free drive in a desktop computer and see just how long it can last. This is not a gaming drive, there's no high-performance aspects to these drives. They're made to keep working for extended periods of time with no rest. And they do it well. ... show more

  • Seems to be so far so good

Works as expected so far. However it is replacing a another WD that I feel should not go badly but I guess that is how it works

  • Great
Capacity: 4TB Style: Red Pattern Name: Hard Drive
Not much to say about this. It is a very high capacity hard drive that works really well. I need to replace on in my server and this does the job. I keep my server in a closet so I don't pay attention to the noise, but the fans are certainly louder than the drive.

  • Works Great in NAS
Capacity: 4TB Style: Red Pattern Name: Hard Drive
I have a Synology network accessible storage system and these drives work perfect with it. There's no interface issues and it was very easy to upgrade to these hard drives, one at a time. These drives are very reliable and have been running non-stop for quite a while without any issues at all.

  • Beware!
Capacity: 4TB Style: Red Pattern Name: Hard Drive
I had been doing my homework on NAS drives and servers. I found the right NAS for us (Synology), and then looked for the right drives to populate it. I had decided on 4 TB drives as that was more than enough for my home/small business use. The recommendations was for WD Red+, but when I looked at the specs, it didn’t mention that there was a difference between the Red and Red+ or Red Pro other than disk rotation and cache. But there is a technical difference, and WD has chosen to hide that. WD Red drives in the 1 to 4TB sizes are SMR drives, which should never be used in a NAS system. They’re fine for a stand-alone hard drive, or in a JBOD application, but NEVER in a RAID system! WD continues to sell these as NAS drives, even after being sued for the deception. As a result, the tech recommended standard is now Seagate Iron Wolf. For a few bucks more, get a true NAS drive, not this, and don’t let WD get away with it! You want a CMR drive in your NAS. ... show more

  • Works fine despite difference from original unit
Capacity: 4TB Style: Red Pattern Name: Hard Drive
Was worried this would cause issues since it's a different model # than the original drives in the WD NAS but it RAID copied fine upon plugging in and has worked for several months now without issue.

  • Great reliable drives in my home NAS
Capacity: 4TB Style: Red Pattern Name: Hard Drive
Purchased two of these drives for a new Synology NAS I purchased. I set them up as a RAID striping array and they are working great. Fairly quiet, reliable (so far, so good) and some of the cheaper drives I found on a wide array of websites.
