  • Good for a small yard
5 stars all around, BUT... it depends on your intended use. I got this for my front and back yard. I’m a strapping young man, I thought... it’ll be easy. And so it was. I had no problem with the mower, it cut well. Here’s the “BUT”; 1. My yard isn’t square or flat so it’s hard to get a consistent look throughout the yard. 2. The blade is narrower than the wheels... obviously. Point being that the wheels fold the grass over and missed on the returning pass. 3. Go over longer grass on the highest setting first, then go shorter after a few days so that the grass doesn’t go through shock. Cutting too much at once is messy and looks bad. 4. The catch basket fills up really fast. The grass will build up above the real of the blades in front of the basket and prevent the clippings from flying into the basket. The buildup then starts to travel forward over the top of the blade and then you’re cutting it twice... This also adds resistance making it harder to push. It’s only a problem of you don’t empty the basket frequently. 5. It squeals horribly if you haven’t used it for a week, but the squeal goes away as soon as it cuts grass. Like the moisture lubricates the edges. 6. If you have a large yard put your money into a gas mower. ... show more

  • Does a decent job, even in tall grass
Had a week infested, overgrown lawn that had not been mowed for a long time due to recurring rain storms. Decided to buy this mower. It was very easy to assemble. Best for: Small yards, since it is not self-propelled. Pluses: (1) Efficiently mowed most tall grass (left a few stubborn tall weeds, (2) Relatively easy to propel, (3) Stores nicely with a small footprint, (4) Rear basket catches most of the lawn trimmings. Minuses: (1) Catcher basket easily slips off and needs to be be reattached, (1) Does not cut well along the edge of the grass (although in fairness, it is not intended to be an edger). ... show more

  • Just what I wanted and needed at an affordable price!
It is exactly what I wanted and expected. It is very lightweight and easy to push. It cuts well. Just know that you must rake up before trying to cut and must have flat ground. Twigs and Spanish Moss jam the blade. It does not cut as well on un-level ground. Pine straw does wrap around the blade. As long as you pick up the lawn and rake up before mowing it does do the job. I am disabled and this is easy for me to push and mow with. It is easy on my back, neck, and shoulder injuries. This is a great mower for Women and disabled persons. I do not have a car or a way to go and get gas for a gas propelled mower so this mower is just what I need. It is nice that I can mow my lawn without needing gas and oil. It is nice not to have to listen to a noisy gas engine while mowing. It is comforting that I am using an earth and environmental friendly mower. I am happy to be saving money on lawn care. ... show more

  • A Lawn Mower That Does NOT Cut Grass
(20150428) When I was growing up in the 1960s, we owned these types of lawn mowers. I remember my grandfather fixing one when he came to the USA for the first time in about 40 years. My mother was frantic that she was out of cooking oil. Anyway, they worked extremely well in the environment that I live in and am using this Sun Joe Mow Joe MJ501M in. That's why I purchased this type of lawn mower. I liked the idea of no gas, oil, or pull ropes breaking. Absolutely beautiful looking machine; very easy to assemble; very easy to use; extremely easy to follow instruction book... BUT this lawn mower, to my utter surprise, does not cut grass! I was able to use one of these just fine at the age of five, but not this one in my 50s! The blades roll like there's no tomorrow, and yet it only flattens down the grass. I did the paper cut test, and it passed with flying colors. I checked to see if the blades were too loose or too tight; no adjustment needed. I adjusted the height of the cut; no change. It won't cut high grass; it won't cut low grass; it won't cut anything but loose foxtails that fall off the stem just by blowing them with my mouth. Awaiting advice from customer service. I have videos, but no pictures. If anyone has any advice on how to get this thing to cut grass "PLEASE!!!" let me know. (20150430) Spoke to Sun Joe's customer service, and they are making an even exchange, even paying for return shipping. Very impressed with the company. Hopefully, this was just a single defective product. We'll see when I get the new one. (20150507) Received 20-Inch MRM (MJ502M instead of MJ501M). It works better in that it cuts grass... some, but still not what I remember when manual lawn mower handles were higher than the top of my five year old head. I still give this only one star because if the handles reached above my head five decades ago and cut this type of grass which was as high as my ankles back then, more modern versions should be able to cut just as well if not better. ... show more
