  • Best AC Unit Ever
Size: 8000 BTU with Ionizer
WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT: So I live in a state where central AC isn't necessarily a common thing (up in New England) and as such I've experienced a lot of window AC units. I first encountered this one installed at an Air BnB I stayed in, and I really liked it so I saught it out when it was time for me to buy a new unit. I mostly survive during the day without AC; I really mostly need it at night, where I can't sleep if its too hot. So the biggest thing I like about this unit is that I can run it in "econ" mode without it waking me up. To better explain: my old AC unit did an adequate job, but I couldn't run it in econ mode because it would shut itself off completely periodically (what econ mode is supposed to do) and then when it would start back up again, it would ROAR to life which would wake me up. As a result, I had to keep it on fan high / econ off so that it would stay consistently loud as white noise as opposed to the silence / roar to life thing it would do normally. This unit: to be honest, I can't really tell if it's on or off without putting my hand up near it. It's surprisingly quiet, and yet at the same time more effective at cooling the room than my old unit. It's truly magical. I can leave it in econ mode and just let it do its thing. Plus! You can turn the LED's off using the remote! So its not broadcasting light into the room all night. I love that feature! The remote, in general, is surprisingly awesome. It's got a display on it, and it seems like you use infra-red to "pair" it with the unit but after it's paired it uses some kinda wireless/bluetoothy thing. Really cool, easy to use. No need to use the phone app if you don't want to, and no need to sync the AC with your house wifi, both things I had no intention of ever doing. WHAT I DON'T LIKE ABOUT IT: But like anything with upsides, there's a downside too: the installation. But it's not all downsides, as I'll explain ... So as others have noted, installing this thing isn't normal for window AC units. It has this frame thing it goes on; and at a high level, I like the frame thing. The best part of the installation is at no point do you feel like you're going to drop the AC unit out of the window. With most AC unit installs, there's that precarious moment where you're holding the unit and getting the window down atop the unit to close it in, and then you're screwing stuff into the window while hoping nothing slips out ... ahh, hate that part. With this unit, the frame supports the unit -- you kind of slide it out on rails out the window and onto the frame -- so at no point are you having to precariously balance the unit. It's always stable and secure. HOWEVER, the frame thing is very specific to your "window situation". It really only works "out of the box" if you're dealing with a single window framed in your wall, and there's nothing outside your window that will cause interference with the AC unit's frame. In my case, I had two problems; the only window in my bedroom is actually a double window (two windows that share a common framing) AND my window is over the front porch, which has a roof that comes up against the underside of my windows. The AC's frame has 'feet' which can't go on a roof (and honestly might damage the roof, so you don't want to do that). I got lucky; the porch roof slopes enough on one side of my window that I was able to put position the unit offset to one side, and that gave me just enough room for the AC unit's "feet" to contact the side of my house instead of the roof. But in some situations, if you don't have clearance under your window, you might not be able to install this unit. And then my double window; the AC frame wants to screw into 2 points, on either side of your window. What I had to do is cut a piece of 2x4 and make a "foot" for one side of the frame. This "foot" contacts the space between my two windows in my double-window shared frame/casement. For added stability, I screwed this 'foot' into the window's frame, however I'm not sure that this was actually necessary -- the wood trim I screwed into needs to be replaced at some point anyway, so I didn't feel too bad about drilling into it. In short: if your window situation isn't super basic and straight forward, you will have to get "creative" with the installation. If you're not the sort of person that has the ability to be "creative" which may involve some minor carpentry or other on the fly adjustments, you may need to get some help with this one. Overall, it's worth it though, best AC unit ever. ... show more

  • Top-rated, most energy-efficient, quietist A/C - if you can find one - but installation's tricky
Size: 12000 BTU
Consumer Reports lists this model as the top-rated 12,000 BTU window A/C you can buy, by quite a bit. Perhaps that's why the model is sold out almost everywhere for the time being, and Amazon only has them from third-party sellers at $300 over the list price. Even so, if you absolutely have to an air conditioner this season, it may be worth it. What makes this model and the two smaller models in the product line unique is the way the inverter/compressor and air circulation unit are completely separated from each other. In a sense, this is like a mini-split A/C, but fit into the form factor of a window unit for those who have no way to mount a mini-split in their home. We live in a high rise in NYC, so a mini-split is definitely out of the question. Also, most mini-splits require a 220v circuit, which isn't available in our post-war building. The Midea U runs on a standard 110v circuit. The Midea U is the first window unit to meet the latest Energy Star efficiency standard, being more than twice as efficient as most models. That said, the SAR rating is is comparable to the least efficient mini-split systems. In other words, the most efficient window air conditioner you can buy right now, which is this model, is equivalent to the least efficient mini-split air conditioner. If there is any way you can install a mini-split A/C in your home, it will likely pay for itself in just a few seasons. If you live in a high rise and can talk the management into installing central air, even as expensive as that might be, it will likely pay for itself compared to using window units. However, if you have no choice in the matter, this is the one to buy. When it comes to installation, the instructions are fairly minimal and a bit confusing. Complicating matters is that Midea requires the use of their proprietary mounting bracket (included) - otherwise the warranty is voided. That can be a problem in New York or any city with restrictions on mounting over brick. We got around that by installing the unit over our terrace, where falling bricks aren't an issue, but not everyone has that option. It may be worthwhile getting something in writing from Midea that they will honor the warranty, should an alternative mounting bracket have to be used by law. The supplied mounting bracket is significantly longer than the air conditioner and was probably designed for use with other models. For some, that may be a problem as it may stick out too far. Since the unit's on our terrace, the bracket was decidedly in the way. It's not possible to saw off the excess, as that would compromise its integrity. Instead, I took up the slack on the inside by using a pair of T-brackets to shift the mounting bracket back to a more reasonable position, which worked quite well. The mounting bracket is designed to attach to the inside of the window frame on both sides, but that's a problem if the window has multiple segments, as is the case with ours. We have a large picture window with double-hung windows on each side. Therefore, there is no inside to which to mount the bracket on the right side. As shown in the picture, the mounting bracket is left just hanging in mid air. The way I secured it was with a spacer and a long screw to mount it to the window sill below. The window itself serves to separate the internal and external portions of the unit from each other. This isolates the vibrations of the compressor, making for an exceptionally quiet window unit. However, there are spaces on both sides that still require insulation, for which white foam insulating panels have been provided. Unfortunately, there's barely enough insulation to do the job, and our window was far from the widest for which the unit was designed. Be prepared to buy more if needed. Also, there is flexible memory foam provided, but it's black and the foam panels are white, which isn't a good combination. Worse, there isn't quite enough memory foam, so be prepared to buy more, preferably in white. There are gaps underneath the A/C that are easily missed, through which air can get through, and possibly bugs. Be sure to take the time to plug these with additional memory foam. Finally, there isn't room to use your screen, so if you plan to open the window on a nice day, you might want to build your own screen to fit the available space. In operation, the unit works extremely well. It's quiet, efficient and much better at cooling the room than our last one. The interface takes a little getting used to and the unit has it's way of overruling your choices so as to provide more effective cooling. It's actually easier to use the smartphone app than the included remote control, but again, there's a learning curve. Setting up the A/C with your WiFi is tricky, but reliable once done. You will need to broadcast your SSID, which most people do - otherwise, the Midea will lose connectivity. Living in a high rise with dozens of WiFi networks in range, I would have preferred otherwise. If you have the expertise and live in a similar situation, I recommend getting a router that lets you restrict WiFi connections to those you specify (MAC address filtering). The smartphone app will work with multiple units, so if you install more than one of them, you'll be able to control them all from one location. ... show more
