  • Outstanding after switching to wound strings
With the original polyurethane strings, the ubass was impossible to intonate, required fret pressure at the back rather than the front of the fret (very awkward and counter-intuitive), and buzzed at almost every fret, even after truss rod adjustments. Replacing the polyurethane strings with the wound strings solved all of those problems (there's still a very minor intonation differential on the 4th string, but it's small enough to ignore.) It's true that the wound strings make it sound more like an acoustic-electric bass than like an upright, but the sound is warm and full. I've played a couple of blues-rock gigs using only the ubass and my GK MB amp, and the sound was great. ... show more

  • I feel like goldilocks :)
I'm new to stringed instruments and I have a bad left shoulder. A full scale bass is too difficult for me. I own a short scale electric and it's a better fit but this little guy is just right. The case/bag it comes in has backpack straps and a center hanging loop. There is also a Velcro band to go around the top of the neck for transit; a nice touch. The instrument shipped with one strap button, I added a second to the bottom of the neck. The strings are a little different of course but they are easy on the fingers. The tuner and 3 band eq are great features as well. From a complete novice with ones of hours of expertise under my belt, I'll say I'm happy with my purchase. In all fairness, I did show it to some actual bass players who know what they are looking at and they all thought it was a solid, travel friendly buy. ... show more

  • Tiny Bass -- Sounds Big Plugged In
This small bass is light and very easy to take anywhere. Unplugged it makes enough volume for practice without a headphone amp, so if you need a portable bass for unplugged practice, this one can do the job. When first plugging in, the tone sounded harsh and picked up a lot of string noise. Clicks, clunks and squeaks from pushing and moving the fingers on the strings was quite pronounced and kind of ugly and distracting. I was thinking the U-bass was going to be useful for unplugged practice, but not much else. I assume the excessive treble is due to the Piezo-style pickups. However, adjusting out most of the treble and half the mids on the built-in EQ made all the difference, producing a surprisingly deep, warm tone and killing most of the annoying finger noise. After bumping up the gain on the amp for a little more sustain, this tiny instrument sounds very much like my full-size, vintage, Peavy, T-40. I almost found myself looking around for whoever was playing the "real" bass. In addition to being light, easy to transport, and great-sounding, the Kala U-Bass is easy to play with a nice low action and light string tension. Also the short scale makes for less hand-stretching when playing runs and walking bass lines. I've been enjoying playing this bass on weekly gigs for several months now. I've gotten a few jokes and comments when setting up (did you borrow that thing from Tiny Tim, or did it shrink from being in the dryer too long-- or left out in the rain, and etc), but the critics tend to change their tune when the hear the deep, rich tone. If you are looking for a tiny instrument for practice or travel that also sounds surprisingly big when plugged in you can't go wrong with the Kala U-bass. ... show more

  • Amazing.
Amazing U bass! I am very pleased with this instrument after having it for a couple months. Plays like a champ and sounds surprisingly big for it's size. I replaced the strings with nylon round wounds and the sound and feel (especially feel) only got better from there. Sounds great through your regular bass amp and tuner works like a champ too. I did not regret buying this little bass! ... show more

  • Sounds great. Came with roundwound strings and not polyurethane shown in photos.
This is a nice little acoustic bass. The sound is great. The preamp is quiet and gives plenty of output to use without an external preamp. Unfortunately, this Kala Wanderer came with ROUNDWOUND strings on it. So, I don't get that nice, plump rubber string sound that I want. Roundwounds make this sound like any other acoustic bass guitar. (I've just ordered some polyurethane strings to replace these silly roundwounds.) Some folks might want that bright steel tone out of a U-Bass, but I do *not* want that. (I have electric basses for that!) I want that signature "U-Bass" thud sound. So, beware that you might get one with roundwound strings on it. You'll just need to order new strings in such a case. They cost about $25. ... show more

  • Great travel bass
overall it is a beautiful bass. I've only noticed one high fret, but doesn't affect play-ability. I bought it as a travel bass for solo practice. it is not loud acoustically, could not compete with an acoustic guitar, but plenty loud when plugged in. I am slowly getting used to the strings. Good value, especially since it comes with a gig bag. ... show more

  • Would give five stars if frets werent razor sharp on the bottom side
Excellent tone and playability. Sounds professional and locked in though my markbass combo amp. Really enjoyable to play, electric tone is well adjusted. Acoustic sound is good but suitable for solo practice or quiet combo's only due to it's softness. My only complaint is the really sharp unfinished edges on either side of the fretboard; it seems every fret is jagged and sharp; usually doesn't interfere with the way I play but it might with some players. It could be that the one I ended up with just missed the fret finishing before it left the shop. This is something you could fix yourself but you might not want to. Check other reviews to see if this is a common issue. ... show more

  • Fun U-Bass!
I wont pretend to be an expert, but I do love this U-Bass. I am finding it comfortable to learn on, and I really love the sound of it. It comes with a gig bag, built in tuner, and bottom peg for a strap. The amp I ended up getting for this is the Ampeg BA 108, and I'm pleased with the combo.
