Description

The Barbados cherry is a large, densely branched shrub. If pruned it will form a central trunk and can grow as a small tree. It varies in shape from a low and spreading habit to a more upright and open habit with slender branches. Shiny light to deep evergreen leaves will vary in size from 1 to 3 inches and are rounded in shape. The small, attractive flowers range in color from pale pink to rose. They usually start to appear in April in our area and flowering will continue throughout the summer and sometimes into the fall. Soft, juicy, thin-skinned Barbados Cherry fruit are light red to deep crimson when mature. The outer shape somewhat resembles a small apple, but inside the fruit are several very un-apple like seed. The fully mature fruit average about an inch in diameter. Barbados cherries are borne in leaf axils, singly or in clusters of 2 or 3. The shrub may have 3 to 5 crops per year, from May to November, with the largest crops appearing during the summer. In frost-free areas it is almost everbearing. The fruit is rather tart but some selections are sub-acid to almost sweet. Inside, the flesh is yellow-orange and very high in vitamin C (ascorbic acid). The Vitamin C content of one fruit ranges from 1000 to 2000 mg per 100 grams of edible fully ripe fruit. More acid fruit has higher vitamin C content, and the amount of this compound is much higher in partially ripe fruit. Sometimes a single Barbados Cherry fruit can supply the daily adult requirement of vitamin C.

  • Love the tags that come with them!
The plants came in wonderful shipping. Easy to replant. When I up planted I did have to break up the roots a bit. But all 4 are looking great!

  • Good
When they first arrived i was very scheptical about the plants. They looked okay, but sad, they had been in a box who knows how long with no light, so yes, they didnt like it, but they are doing fine. I am getting new growth, which is good. Over all, i am satisfied.

  • Nice healthy little trees
The trees arrived as nicely rooted cuttings. They are small but healthy and the price was great. They are already growing new leaves. I'm a patient person so I don't mind waiting until they grow up, but if you want fruit quickly, you might try to find something a little bigger to start with.

  • The diameter of the rooted cuttings were super small.
I was excited to receive the package and it seemed to be packaged well but when I opened it most of the leaves fell off. One plant looked good, two were okay and one was just a twig. I'm not sure the last one will recover. I replanted all into separate 3" pots and am hoping all will start to recover and show signs of new growth. I was disappointed in the diameter of the rooted cuttings, all were about the diameter of a #2 pencil lead. I expected them to be a least as big as a pencil. All the cutting did have good roots growing so I'll try to recover the plants. All four were about 1 to 2" in height. ... show more

  • My four perfect Barbados Cherry Trees (and pictures)
I recently received 4 tiny, very cute, Barbados Cherry Trees, by mail. They all arrived in perfect condition, and was carefully wrapped, and watered too. I kept them for about 4 days in my kitchen window sill, so they'd get light. Yesterday, I planted 3 of the 4 trees, inside three 3-gallon containers. I kept the 4th tree in my kitchen window sill, as reserve, but plan to plant it also, possibly inside a hugh 25 gallon or more container. I plan to plant at least 2 in either front yard or back yard, along with my other tropical fruit trees. I want to also have a hugh container tree, as mentioned earlier in this comment. The leaves were all in tact, and the color was very good, green, no yellow. I had no leaves dropping either. I have a couple of pictures to show how cute they are, and the perfect condition after they arrived in the postal. The pictures in my house were taken the next day after arrival, and the 3 gallon containers pictures were taken yesterday after planting them in the containers. Enjoy the pictures! S. Florida location. UPDATE pictures taken of three Barbado trees (fourth is in front yard container) taken on July 29, 2018..It has only been two months since last picture when they were much smaller...please see upgraded pictures below (beginning fourth picture forward..there will be three of them)...originally I purchased four of them on May 19, 2018, and upon postal arrival were only about three to four inches high, now they are about twenty inches high. I will begin transplanting them from their one gallon containers when they are about three feet high. ... show more
